In Your Yard
Yards and gardens are extensions of our homes. Children play in yards, and pets may spend much of their time outdoors. In taking care of our yards, we sometimes use water inefficiently. Often, we employ pesticides or fertilizers that can be harmful to humans as well as the environment. We also can produce unnecessary yard wastes in the process. Taking a natural approach to yard care can save time and money, protect your family's health, and protect the environment. The City of Seattle recommends five steps to a natural yard:
  • Build healthy soil. Plant right for your site. Practice smart watering. Think twice before using pesticides. Practice natural lawn care.
  • For information about natural yard care visit the or call 206-633-0224
#35 TAKE A PASS ON THE GAS Rating: **** Use electric or manual mowers and yard equipment (such as leaf blowers or rakes, trimmers and edgers) instead of gasoline powered models Most gas-powered mowers and other types of yard equipment don't carry the same pollution control devices found in new automobiles. Electric mowers and yard tools are now available from a number of manufacturers and retailers. Not only do they prevent air pollution, they are quieter than their gas-powered counterparts. For smaller yards and gardens, manual reel mowers, clippers and edgers are environmentally safe and offer the health benefits of exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions about Yard and Garden Care
    Real questions from streamside landowners
Can I take water from the stream for my garden? You may divert water from your stream only if you have a Certificate of Water Right from the State Department of Ecology. A water right is a legal authorization to use a certain amount of public water for specific purposes. Washington State law requires users of public water to receive approval from the state prior to actual use of the water. Approval is granted in the form of a water right permit or certificate. Diverting water is also regulated under the County Drainage Code since diversions of water from streams can have drainage, water quality, wildlife habitat, and flooding implications. Check with Snohomish County's Department of Planning and Development Services for Drainage Code details. Even if you have a water right, using stream water to irrigate a yard or garden can harm your stream. Many streams in Snohomish County that once flowed all year are now dry in summer. At that time of year, fish cannot get to pools and spawning areas because low water tables can no longer replenish dry streambeds. Depressed water tables are primarily caused by ground water withdrawals (wells) and reduced groundwater recharge due to development (pavement and roofs). Diverting water from your stream for irrigation can make this problem worse.

Living with my husband, Larry, for more than five decades has taught me one thing: Not all men like to get down on their hands and knees and plant or pull weeds. But some of them enjoy watching plants grow. They especially like to watch the developing fruit on fruit trees. For that reason we have a mini fruit orchard. There are orange, lemon, lime, tangelo, limequat and pomegranate trees growing in containers, most are several years old and bearing fruit.

    Plant Care Tips for January
During the bleak winter months, the extreme cold temperatures can take its toll on all of your trees. The main task is to protect them from the very cold weather. Check the soil in the pots to make sure it has not dried out. If so, water the soil so it is just damp. Don’t wait until spring to do all of your maintenance! Winter is an excellent time for heavy pruning, new design and carving, needle plucking on pines (2-3 yr old needles). Don’t forget to take off old wire and add new wire. This is a good time to plan your repotting schedule for spring. Draw up a list of trees that need repotting and order your soil requirements and any pots you may need. Finally, watch out for mice girdling your trees. Use mothballs or a hungry cat to prevent problems!
    Plant Care Tips for February
Now is a good time to begin putting together your bonsai compost. A suggested combination would be 1/3 peat, 1/3 garden compost, 1/3 sand or grit, and a slow-release fertilizer (about a handful per 5 gallons). Towards the end of the month, if there are any brief mild spells, it is time to repot and wire those deciduous trees. It is also possible to lift trees from the ground and do some undercutting. Leave evergreens until later. Branch pruning of deciduous and evergreen trees can be done (except Japanese maples and pines). Any major redesign and reshaping of trees can be done now. Pines and evergreens can be grafted now.

    WHY NOT JUST MULCH MOW?
More work does not always mean better results! Bagging your grass, hauling it, and throwing it out is a waste of your time and of your lawn's precious resources. Mulch mowing simply means mowing your lawn and letting it lay. But won't that contribute to thatch? Not at all. Check out this excerpt from the University of Illinois: The primary component of thatch is turfgrass stems and roots. It accumulates as these plant parts buildup faster than they breakdown. Thatch problems are due to a combination of biological, cultural, and environmental factors. Cultural practices can have a big impact on thatch. For example, heavy nitrogen fertilizer applications or overwatering frequently contribute to thatch, because they cause the lawn to grow excessively fast. Avoid overfertilizing and overwatering. Despite popular belief, short clippings dropped on the lawn after mowing are not the cause of thatch buildup. Clippings are very high in water content and breakdown rapidly when returned to lawns after mowing, assuming lawns are mowed on a regular basis (not removing more than one-third of the leaf blade). That excerpt mentions frequent mowing and not removing more than one-third of the grass blade. While this may sound like more work, a study has shown that although the lawn is mowed more often in proper mulch mowing, overall time spent is actually decreased, due to no hassling with bagging. Grass clippings contain valuable nutrients that can return 25% of your lawn's fertilizer needs. It is the most efficient way to recycle yard waste; it saves time, money, and improves your lawn all at the same time! A win-win situation any way you look at it.

Summer Yard Care - Landscaping Yards
Summer keeps homeowners quite busy landscaping yards. The biggest job in summer yard care is keeping plants and lawns watered. But summer yard care also involves fighting pests and diseases. And since people rely on equipment to help them with landscaping yards, that equipment itself needs to be maintained. August launches hurricane season, damage from which can be lessened through preparation.

The frugal can save money on their water bills in the long run through watering lawns with irrigation systems, if they ensure the settings are at their most efficient. And there's no question irrigation promotes easier lawn care.

Currently, Miami-Dade County only has a 10% tree canopy compared to the nationwide average of 30%.
Now that you know the benefits of trees and plants you can see why increasing our canopy is so crucial. All residents need to work together to accomplish this task and fortunately Miami-Dade County is taking steps that are making a great, green impact.
