Products from dead or dying yard trees
What products can you get from dead or dying trees in your yard? Every type of wood has its good points and its bad points. Elm dries quickly, making it good for firewood; red oak works well for interior cabinets or paneling; white oak, a rot-resistant wood, can be used for boats, posts, or outdoor construction. Wood products you could make from your removed trees: Firewood
Firewood is a common use of dead or dying trees. This is a good idea if your trees are small, crooked, or you have leftover limbs and scraps from making other wood products. You should dry firewood before you use or sell it. Oak should be dried for two years because it looses moisture slowly. Elm needs to dry one year. The drier the wood the cleaner it burns. NOTE: Firewood cut from fresh trees or trees recently infested by insects and disease can contribute to the spread of pests to nearby healthy trees. Because of this, many communities have ordinances to guide you in storing your firewood. If your community has no ordinances, treat your firewood by (1) removing the bark while the log is still green, or (2) cut the tree into firewood lengths and stack so both ends of the log are exposed to good air flow for faster drying. For fresh green wood from April 15 until July 1, totally cover the pile with heavy plastic (4-6 mil) taking care to bury the edges of the tarp with soil. Oaks that died from oak wilt within the past year should not be moved, in any form, into areas where oak wilt is not found.

22. Lawn And Yard Care
Healthy lawns, coupled with trees and shrubs, can help prevent soil erosion. and yard care can pay dividends to both your health and the environment.
http://www.vteco.com/contntpg/lawnyard.html
Maintaining a healthy lawn and garden not only makes a home more attractive, it also has environmental benefits. Flower and vegetable gardens can be homegrown and pesticide-free sources of food and inspiration. Healthy lawns, coupled with trees and shrubs, can help prevent soil erosion. The care and attention you give to proper gardening, landscaping, and yard care can pay dividends to both your health and the environment. Consider these one dozen ways you can care for your lawn and garden:
  • Use organic gardening techniques, such as netting or companion planting to keep insects from plants, pull weeds instead of using herbicides, and cover your garden with plastic in the fall to prevent weed germination. Many commercial pesticides and herbicides are poisons that may cause serious damage to your skin, eyes, nervous and respiratory systems, and internal organs. Applied around the home, many pesticides and herbicides build up in plants and soil and in the organisms that eat those plants. As they work their way up the food chain, they may become more concentrated. If you feel you must use chemical pesticides, be sure you know the identity of the pest you want to control, purchase the right product, and carefully follow label directions.

    Why Organic Lawn Care?
Organic lawn care and gardening begins with a commitment to the environment. Habitat fragmentation is occurring all over the United States, especially around cities, and even in farming communities. Discontinuous land use breaks up large blocks of habitat such as forests, grasslands, and marshes. Subdivisions, roads and fences are being built at a fast rate. The survival of many plants and animals are threatened. Exotic plants have escaped into the wild, threatening native species. Introduced insects such as the imported fire ant have altered entire ecosystems by preying on native microbes, insects, and the young of small animals. A more organic approach to landscape design and gardening is in order. It is no longer a fad!
Private residences and other developed properties hold a great potential for restoring quality, quantity, and richness of the plant and wildlife habitat that has been displaced. By maintaining a healthy habitat in our yards, we create healthier living. Plants in richly vegetated spaces absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, thus renewing our air supply. Plant foliage captures dust and other pollutants, purifying the air we breathe. Vegetated areas aid in erosion and soil conservation. Plant roots hold soils in place, while plants impede water runoff.

SPRUCE UP YOUR LAWN FOR SPRING
Follow these smart tips and you'll be well on your way to a beautiful, lush green
    lawn this spring.
    Mow Low, Then High
The first and second time you cut your lawn, you should set your blade a notch lower
than usual. This will help remove dead leaves and brittle grass quickly and easily.
Afterwards, you should raise the blade height so that you'll be cutting no more than
a third of the grass blade. This produces a healthier lawn because taller grass promotes longer roots that need less water. Keep Your Blade Sharp Dull blades tear the grass instead of cutting it, increasing the chances for disease. It takes only a few minutes to have your blade sharpened. You can do it yourself using a bench grinder or file, or you can have it done at most hardware and home improvement stores for a nominal charge. Leave the Clippings Grass clippings make an excellent natural fertilizer. They settle down through the grass and rest on the soil's surface. Earthworms then incorporate the clippings into the soil, improving both its drainage and its ability to hold water. All Yard-Man tractors and mowers feature mulching capability.

Nothing graces a yard like a few well-placed trees, bushes and perennial flowers, but these living ornaments exact a price. In addition to water and fertilizer, many require a bit of seasonal pruning. And pruning is necessary not only because it improves your plants' appearance, it also reduces the likelihood of disease, infestations and storm damage. It's safe to say that most of us approach pruning with a measure of trepidation. It's easy to imagine making a mistake and causing permanent damage. While there is that risk, most plants can survive an error, and pruning is not that difficult. All it takes is the right tools, a little knowledge and the courage to make that first cut. Most seasonal pruning projects require only three or four tools, and these are usually affordable hand tools. At the top of the list, and probably the most frequently used, is the simple hand pruner. This tool works well on branches up to 3/4 in. in diameter. If you have hedges that need frequent shaping, manual or electric hedge shears are a must. For branches up to 1 1/4 in. in diameter, use lopping shears. For larger branches, use a curved pruning saw or a bow saw. This is the basic list. While other tools are available, such as extension saws, extension loppers and chain saws, the tools mentioned above will be up to most common pruning tasks.

    Improving Yard and Garden Care
    Why Should You Be Concerned?
Your yard and garden might be the last places you would look for pollution problems, but behind beautiful landscapes are activities that may threaten both your health and the environment. On average, homeowners use 10 times more chemical fertilizers and pesticides per acre than farmers use on farmland. If applied improperly, these chemicals can find their way into drinking water wells and pollute nearby lakes and streams. Other problems occur when exposed soil washes away during a storm, harming wildlife habitat and choking waterways. Indiscriminate watering of lawns and gardens wastes large amounts of water. While it may seem that your part in pollution is minor, the effects of chemicals, soil loss, and wasted water from the hundreds or thousands of homes in your region can really add up.
How Can KY-A-Syst Help? This publication leads you through an evaluation of your home and property to determine pollution and health risks. After you have read this publication, walk around your home and property and answer the questions in the boxes, circling the answers that best apply. Your answers will help you become familiar with your yard and garden care practices so you can make changes to help protect your family's health and the environment.

Seasonal Insights Summer in the midwestern states can be highly variable, but you can always expect periods of low rainfall. Dry weather combined with high temperatures place a great deal of stress on your landscape, particularly newly planted trees and shrubs that are most vulnerable to damage. Pay close attention to the water needs of your plants. If the plant wilts, causing the leaves to droop, water right away. Don't wait for leaves to turn brown before watering. A wilted lawn will turn dark blue in color - first in distinct spots and later across the entire lawn. This is a clear signal that your lawn needs water immediately. Warm humid nights increase disease activity on your lawn, particularly in the southern parts of the Midwest. Under these conditions, you must water in the morning. Evening and night-time watering will aggravate lawn diseases.
    A Good Starting Place
There are several turfgrass species adapted to the Midwest. The best choices for the northern part of this region are Kentucky bluegrass, and mixtures of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. However, in the transition zone, from southern Ohio across to Missouri and Kansas, turf-type tall fescue is the best. Tall fescue will tolerate the summer heat that otherwise severely injures Kentucky bluegrass.

Seasonal Insights The unusually warm autumn months have been beneficial for Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue. These cool-season grasses have remained green and continue to accumulate food reserves in their root system that will sustain the turf until next spring. However, the lack of rainfall is placing many lawns in drought stress. Both lawns and landscape plants must have adequate moisture in the root zone during winter. Otherwise, cold, drying winds can cause widespread damage that may not be seen until spring. If warm weather has stimulated buds on trees and shrubs to open, growth and flowering may be limited in spring. Forthcoming cold weather will likely freeze those buds, which may lead to odd-looking leaves when the plants begin to grow next spring. This should be a temporary effect and won't hurt the plant's long-term beauty.
    A Good Starting Place
Winter is a good time to learn more about your landscape plants. There are some excellent books available at your local library and in bookstores. Also, most states, through their land grant university, publish useful tips on growing and maintaining the landscape. You can contact the local cooperative extension service office to get a list of available publications.
