Traveling Back In Time With IDEA
by Brian M. Coyner
Mar. 23, 2004
The other day I was happily programming in my cubicle. Overjoyed with excitement that I accomplished my task early, I wanted to quickly check my files into source control. Some files were no longer needed by the application. Using my handy source control tool's UI, I selected the files (all the changed files) and clicked delete. Uh! Oh! I knew as soon as I hit delete (and the ok button on the "Are you really sure?" dialog) many hours of work were lost. I am no longer a happy programmer. But wait... I am using IDEA, which I know can help me. IDEA has a great feature called Local History. As you code, run, debug, etc. IDEA is tracking and labeling your code. At any time you can ask IDEA to show you the local history of a file. The local history displays a colorful side-by-side comparison of the file. Simply find the code you want, copy-n-paste, and you are back in business. In the case of a deleted file, simply show the local history for the directory where the file lived. IDEA then allows you to restore the file. Really cool! Brian Coyner's Rules of Thumb:
  • Always "sit on your hands" before executing a command to delete something.

    Time Travel and Modern Physics
Time travel has been a staple of science fiction. With the advent of general relativity it has been entertained by serious physicists. But, especially in the philosophy literature, there have been arguments that time travel is inherently paradoxical. The most famous paradox is the grandfather paradox: you travel back in time and kill your grandfather, thereby preventing your own existence. To avoid inconsistency some circumstance will have to occur which makes you fail in this attempt to kill your grandfather. Doesn't this require some implausible constraint on otherwise unrelated circumstances? We examine such worries in the context of modern physics.

Discussions of the nature of time, and of various issues related to time, have always featured prominently in philosophy, but they have been especially important since the beginning of the 20 th Century. This article contains a brief overview of some of the main topics in the philosophy of time Fatalism; the Topology of Time; Reductionism and Platonism with Respect to Time; McTaggart's Arguments; The A Theory of Time and The B Theory of Time; Presentism, Eternalism, and The Growing Universe Theory; Time Travel; and The 3D/4D Controversy together with some suggestions for further reading on each topic, and a bibliography.

Time Travel - Fact or Fiction?
We define time travel to mean departure from a certain place and time followed (from the traveller's point of view) by arrival at the same place at an earlier (from the sedentary observer's point of view) time. Time travel paradoxes arise from the fact that departure occurs after arrival according to one observer and before arrival according to another. In the terminology of special relativity time travel implies that the timelike ordering of events is not invariant. This violates our intuitive notions of causality. However, intuition is not an infallible guide, so we must be careful. Is time travel really impossible, or is it merely another phenomenon where "impossible" means "nature is weirder than we think?" The answer is more interesting than you might think.
    The Science Fiction Paradigm
The B-movie image of the intrepid chrononaut climbing into his time machine and watching the clock outside spin backwards while those outside the time machine watch the him revert to callow youth is, according to current theory, impossible. In current theory, the arrow of time flows in only one direction at any particular place. If this were not true, then one could not impose a 4-dimensional co-ordinate system on space-time, and many nasty consequences would result. Nevertheless, there is a scenario which is not ruled out by present knowledge. This usually requires an unusual spacetime topology (due to wormholes or strings in general relativity) which has not yet seen, but which may be possible. In this scenario the universe is well behaved in every local region; only by exploring the global properties does one discover time travel.

    Q: How does this work?

A: Current scientific theory states that Time Travel may be possible, however the technology is a long way off, perhaps hundreds of years in the future. Now, assume it does become possible in say, 500 years. As with any technology, Time Travel will get less expensive as time goes on. Just as the price of a VCR has dropped to less than $70 from the several hundred dollars it cost just ten years ago, Time Travel, once it becomes feasible, will initially be very expensive yet it will become more and more economical as time goes by. Click here to join!
Q: How does this help me?

A: The concept is that one day, it may be possible for people living far in the future to retrieve you from your current frame of reference (their past - your present) and bring you into the future (their present - your future.) More info on this page!

Time travel is a concept that has long fascinated humanity Merlin experiencing time backwards, or religious traditions like Mohammed's trip to Jerusalem and ascent to heaven , returning before a glass knocked over had spilt its contents. Often nowadays it is a plot device used in science fiction and many movies and television shows to set a character in a particular time parallel universes or alternate history where some little event took place or didn't take place, but causes large changes in the future. Famous fictional time machines include the modified DeLorean sports car from the Back to the Future movie trilogy , the TARDIS from the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who and the titular time machine of H. G. Wells 's novel. Wells's novel is meant to predict the likely future of humanity itself, starting with world wars and ending with humans reverting back to an existence reminiscent of the Garden of Eden , but with a terrifying twist.

Time Travel Time travel is a fairly new topic of scientific and philosophical investigation. In science, different models of the cosmos and the natural laws governing the universe imply different possibilities for time travel. Theories about time travel have changed as the dominant cosmological theories have evolved from classical, Newtonian conceptions to modern, relativistic and quantum mechanical conceptions. Philosophers were quick to note some of the implications of the new physics for venerable issues in metaphysics: the nature of time, causation and personal identity to name just a few. The subject continues to produce a fruitful cross-fertilization of ideas between scientists and philosophers as theorists in both fields struggle to resolve confounding paradoxes that emerge when time travel is pondered seriously. This article discusses both the scientific and philosophical issues relevant to time travel.

    Introduction
A title like 'Rotating Universes and Time Traveling' is certainly enough for some people to consider me a mad scientist or an incurable geek. Maybe they are right, I don't know. In any case, my Ph.D. thesis [1] deals with these subjects, particularly the rotation part. I believe there are some people on the Net who may be interested in this stuff. That's why I decided to write this article, largely based on my thesis, and put it online. I should mention that I left the research in 1984, and there may be some development in this area that I'm not aware of. I would be grateful if some reader could notify me in that case. The article begins with explaining what is meant by a rotating universe. Experience has shown that this is a very difficult concept. But as it is, Einstein's General Relativity theory does allow for rotating universes: There are such explicit mathematical solutions. Some of the rotating universes also turn out to have the shocking property that they allow (in theory) for traveling backwards in time, although the connection with rotation is not clear.

Is time travel possible? Your browser is not configured to play Macromedia Flash Content
Hi! Thanks for calling Dr. Marc at The Space Place to hear what I'm thinking about this May. Members of the Tripoli Minnesota Rocket Club #45 ask a very intriguing question this month: Is time travel possible? Time travel is one of my favorite topics! I wrote some time travel stories in junior high school that used a machine of my own invention to travel backwards in time, and I have continued to study this fascinating concept as the years have gone by. We all travel in time. During the last year, I've moved forward one year and so have you. Another way to say that is that we travel in time at the rate of 1 hour per hour. But the question is, can we travel in time faster or slower than "1 hour per hour"? Or can we actually travel backward in time, going back, say 2 hours per hour, or 10 or 100 years per hour? It is mind-boggling to think about time travel. What if you went back in time and prevented your father and mother from meeting? You would prevent yourself from ever having been born! But then if you hadn't been born, you could not have gone back in time to prevent them from meeting. The great 20th century scientist Albert Einstein developed a theory called Special Relativity. The ideas of Special Relativity are very hard to imagine because they aren't about what we experience in everyday life, but scientists have confirmed them. This theory says that space and time are really aspects of the same thingspace-time. There's a speed limit of 300,000 kilometers per second (or 186,000 miles per second) for anything that travels through space-time, and light always travels the speed limit through empty space.

What do we mean by time travel?
Technically we're all travelling in time just by existing. But we can't seem to control our motion through time in the same way we can control our motion through space. What most people usually mean by time travel is the ability to drive around in time they same way they'd drive around in a city. Let's look at a spacetime diagram that shows a few examples of different ways observers or objects can travel in time and space.
It's important to remember that any single point on this diagram represents an event - both a moment in time and a location in space . The origin of the axes in the figure represents the place X=0 at the time T=0 . This is what we mean by a spacetime event.
The figure to the left is a spacetime diagram showing spacetime paths of various observers moving in 1+1 dimensional spacetime. Paths A B C and D represent the normal kind of time travel that we find in our world. Path E shows an example of a kind of time travel that is not allowed in Special Relativity.
    The allowed time travellers
The light blue spacetime path A represents a flash of light from a laser coming from off of the diagram. The flash of light travels into the future to the spacetime event
