    Through the “Establishment of transportation museums” activity, TE funds may be used for surface transportation museums that fulfill the following
    http://www.enhancements.org/factsheets/te_12.htm
    The Railroaders Museum The River Heritage Museum Transportation Museums The federal Transportation Enhancements (TE) program funds 12 different types of transportation-related activities. Through the “Establishment of transportation museums” activity, communities create museums to educate the public about the history of transportation in America. Many museums are created within a rehabilitated historic transportation building (TE activity 7). Since the TE program began in 1992, approximately 1 percent of available TE funds have been programmed for transportation museum projects. Examples of Successful Projects Eligible Projects Working within Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines, each state Department of Transportation (DOT) determines the eligibility of TE projects for funding. Examples of projects that may be considered eligible include:
    Construction of a new facility or wing to an existing facility;
    Conversion of an existing facility, such as railroad stations or historic properties;
    The purchase of artifacts necessary for the creation and operation of the facility.

      Travel Through Time: Take a Trip to a Train Museum Ever since the first "iron horse" chugged across the landscape more than 150 years ago, trains have captured the public's imagination. At rail museums scattered throughout California, visitors can indulge this fascination, reliving past eras when trains brought the adventurous to the West, served the state's timber and mining industries, ferried urban workers from home to job, and knit the state together with intercity connections. If there is one rail museum in the state that most California train buffs would recommend as a "must-see," it would probably be the California State Railroad Museum (CSRRM) in Sacramento. And they would not be alone over 500,000 visitors annually traipse through the six-building museum complex that covers over 225,000 square feet of exhibit space.
      Visitors to the Orange Empire Railway Museum can ride this interurban that once plied the Southern Pacific commuter line across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and later served in Los Angeles. (Don Brown/Orange Empire Railway Museum)
