Key Theme 6: Science, Technology, and the Environment
All living creatures survive by extracting energy and other resources from their surroundings. Each animal has its own, distinctive ways of getting what it needs from the environment. Some bacteria, for example, extract energy from nuclear waste products, while others, which existed early in the history of our planet, lived by consuming chemicals such as sulfur generated in hot vents on the ocean floor. But most animals have a fixed repertoire of survival tricks, determined by their genetic makeup. What makes humans so different is that our capacity for collective learning allows us to continue discovering new ways of getting the energy, food, and materials we need from our environment. Over time, humans have learned to exploit a huge variety of different environments, and with increasing efficiency. Today, though we are only one of millions of species, we may control up to 40 percent of all the energy that enters the biosphere from sunlight. Some time between 250,000 and 100,000 years ago Homo sapiens acquired language, and with it the capacity for collective learning. This meant that members of our species could share complex knowledge with one another, accumulate and store knowledge, and pass knowledge to the next generation. No other species can do these things, except in very rudimentary ways.

Mrs Baraka
The way to Mrs Baraka's house on Pate island. Sixty year-old Mrs Baraka, a Pate (pronounced partay ) Island native, a Kenyan mother of five, believes she is part-Chinese. Her family tree, she said, had taken a fork when Chinese visited her islands in ancient times. In our meeting at the porch outside her dirt-paved hut, a ten-minute walk from the mangrove shores of the island, Mrs Baraka showed us an old porcelain bowl which she said was a family heirloom. She also told us that she was “proud to be Chinese”a knowledge she had inherited from her mother since she was twenty. The big question on everyone's mind was, of course, is Mrs Baraka related to Zheng He's entourage? Are her ancestors Chinese soldiers from the Ming dynasty fleet who ventured onshore to trade? Mike had heard of tales of Chinese shipwrecks off these islands in the 15th century. Is that where Mrs Baraka found her Chinese origins and porcelain heirloom? Lamu, an island south of Pate, where we stayed, has been called the Kathmandu of Africa. With donkey carts the only means of heavy transportation, this sleepy town exudes relaxation.

As a result of this meeting, ten public and private sector people met in July of 1989, at the urging of Ralph Huiras, to establish a 501 C6 non-profit corporation known as the Ozaukee County Economic Development Corporation (OCEDC). Ralph Huiras was elected the first president of the OCEDC Board. The early years were spent in an assessment of what the corporation intended to be and what they hoped to accomplish. In 1991, the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Ozaukee County, assisted OCEDC in developing a structure for the organization and making the board more diverse with representatives from the business community and public sector. In 1992, a survey was sent to employers in Ozaukee County in order to identify workforce needs. Representatives from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wisconsin Electric Power Company and the IBM Corporation assisted OCEDC by facilitating a two-day strategic planning session to address the workforce shortage in Ozaukee County. 56 people participated in this planning session, which led to the creation of Workforce 2010.

Tara Threatened by Transportation
Celtic tiger threatens mystical Tara, where kings were once crowned by David McKittrick , UK Independent "Thousands of years of history, pre-history and legend have gone into the history of Tara, as a place and as an idea, so that it has been described as the centre of the Celtic world. One of its numerous legends is that it served as an entrance to the "Otherworld". Here high kings of Ireland gathered with their warriors to perform a ceremony to ward off attacks coming from this netherland. "Today, however, another set of people's priority is to seek, not a gateway to another world, but more prosaically access to the city of Dublin, where they have to get to work every day. These are the commuters who face the drag into Dublin from towns beyond Tara, spending hours each day crawling along inadequate roads not far from the hallowed site. They too are plainly right when they say they need an improved transport system." "The Irish have, without question, a deep sense of history and a tendency to regard it as a living thing. In the letters columns of Dublin newspapers, for example, scarcely a day goes by without correspondence on issues such as the 1798 rebellion and the 1916 rising. Yet the constant re-examination of history has of late taken second place to a sense of a country revelling in new-found prosperity. Politicians no longer continually invoke the past as they once did: politics is now conducted much more in the here and now. It is a country where materialism often prevails over the old ways. This was particularly seen in the authorities' decision not to call a national day of mourning for the Pope."

1825-1850: A Period of Immigration and Change
A quarter of the way through the nineteenth century Oregon remained predominantly wilderness. The Willamette Valley at this time is described as "an oak orchard," a distant reality of what it is today. Early settlers were predominantly young men who were engaged in local fur trading. American missionaries also came west during the 1830s hoping to spread the word of God to the distant frontier. The Hudson's Bay Company was the most dominant government and economic entity in the Pacific Northwest during this time. By the 1830s the Hudson's Bay Company held a virtual monopoly on cattle in Oregon. American efforts to thwart this British dominance in the area resulted in the creation of the Willamette Cattle Company in 1837. This venture gave American settlers a growing sense of independence from British interests. It is seen as the first cooperative venture among early Oregon settlers. Settlers would continue to invite U.S. influence by seeking legislation to protect settled lands. By the middle of the 1840s, Oregon was becoming known as a place of cheap and fertile land. Stories of abundant and free land, as well as bountiful agricultural potential, brought the first significant numbers west in the early 1840s. These immigrants came predominantly from the Midwest, and also from other northern and eastern states.

Date Index Thread Index You have it. When hypertext is used as a database, one is using an old form of a database (dates back to the sixties in computer media, and to medieval scholars in paper media). The cart metaphor is to illustrate that age does not equal obsolescence because the application determines the utility. As a GUI, there are similar considerations. GUIs have been through an evolution in which early GUIs (think Englebart and Sutherland) used properties such as link controls in context of content that were later improved at Xerox PARC, largely discarded in a MACINTOSH, then revived in the primitive Mosaic browser. Functionality such as Previous (back) and Next, History lists, etc should be considered similarly. Would an aggregator be retrograde? What are the precedents? len From: bryan [ mailto:bry@itnisk.com
