SI - The Metrics International System of Units
Travel in Washington Links: Washington State Traffic and Travel Information Washington State Tourism Information Washington State Ferries The International System of Units (SI) is a modernized version of the metric system established by international agreement. The metric system of measurement was developed during the French Revolution and was first promoted in the U.S. by Thomas Jefferson. Its use was legalized in the U.S. in 1866. In 1902, proposed congressional legislation requiring the U.S. Government to use the metric system exclusively was defeated by a single vote. SI provides a logical and interconnected framework for all measurements in science, industry, and commerce. The metric system is much simpler to use than the existing English system since all its units of measurement are divisible by 10.

NREL's Hybrid Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles research supports the U.S. Department of Energy's NREL works toward developing hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs); moving them from research and development to the marketplace. The laboratory began investigating HEV technologies more than a decade ago. In the past few years several commercial HEV models, which are powered simultaneously by batteries and fuel, have taken their place in the mainstream automobile market. More recently, HEV drivetrains have been used successfully in heavy-duty trucks, buses, and military vehicles. The transportation research conducted at NREL is funded by DOE's Office of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. This work crosscuts and supports many NREL programs and is led by the Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems
