Photo by Michael Thompson/The Arbiter Transplants rock in Boise with the Van's Warped Tour. From fast guitar riffs and rhythmic drums, to the vibrating soul of spirited music, the band covers a new angle of rock. Wildly different than a punk compilation, the overtones of West Coast punk are everywhere, and rapping lyrics make this one of the most unique albums of the summer. Having what seems to be a good formula for a great side band, the record emulates the diversity of its members. From a rapping talent to underground gutter punk, the backbone is top-40 power rock and combined they create an original powerhouse. Originally on the Hellcat record label (an offshoot of Epitaph records) the band came about with Armstrong jamming in his free time with Aston.

Animal-to-Human Transplants: the Ethics of Xenotransplantation
Introduction
Transplants save thousands of lives every year, but there are not enough human organs donated for everybody who needs them. This shortage has led scientists to search for new ways to help patients needing transplants. Xenotransplantation – the transplantation of organs from animals into humans – is a potential solution. Recent scientific developments may mean that the problem of rejection of tissue transplanted between species can be overcome. However, xenotransplantation raises complex ethical and safety issues which demand resolution. A Working Party was set up to examine these questions, and a Report was published in March 1996.
The Report considered concerns such as:
  • is it ethical to use animals to provide ‘spare parts’ for humans?

http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p1995.htm
Starting Vegetable Transplants
Introduction
Before learning how to grow vegetable transplants, let's consider why it's a good idea to start vegetable plants indoors. There are several reasons for raising seedlings indoors before transplanting them later to the field. These reasons include the following:
  • For seeds that are expensive, such as many of the newer hybrids, seeding indoors to raise transplants conserves seeds. There is a higher germination rate, and more high-quality plants can be produced in a greenhouse under controlled environmental conditions. Starting seeds indoors extends the growing season. This is important for early yields, since plants can be ready to set out immediately after reasonable risk of frost is past. Earlier harvest is more attainable by using transplants than by direct seeding in the field. Generally, an earlier harvest is more valuable to the market. Costs associated with raising transplants can easily be recouped. Since any variety of seed can be ordered for transplant production, a grower has a much wider selection of varieties. The choice of varieties of commercially available transplants is limited to the most popular varieties.
Quality Transplants
Transplants of high quality should exhibit certain characteristics. They should be mid-sized, have a healthy, green appearance, and not be tall or leggy. It is best if they are not yet flowering, since this tends to stress plants following transplanting. Flowering plants often will lose blossoms after transplanting. Be sure that transplants have no insects or diseases on them, so that plants will have a better chance to get off to a good start.

Embryonic Pig Cell Transplants Halt Rat Diabetes: Procedure Requires No Immune Suppression Drugs
St. Louis, Feb. 25, 2004 — An experimental cross-species transplant to treat diabetes has passed an early test in rats with better-than-expected results, suggesting the innovative approach might halt type 1 diabetes while greatly reducing the risk of rejection.
Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis set up control and experimental groups of rats with diabetes. The experimental group received embryonic pig pancreas cell transplants and antirejection drugs to prevent the rats’ immune systems from destroying the transplants. The control group received only the transplants and no immune suppression drugs. To the researchers’ surprise, the control group’s transplants grew unmolested by the immune system, halting the rats’ diabetes and changing the focus of the study to transplanting without the need for immune suppression.
“Every once in a while you get lucky, and now we have the possibility of transplanting these pig cells and not having to worry about rejection,” says Marc R. Hammerman, M.D., the Chromalloy Professor of Renal Diseases in medicine and leader of the study.

Verified by National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) January 25, 2005 Sponsored by: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Information provided by: National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Purpose The are a variety of cancerous diseases of the blood and bone marrow that can be potentially cured by bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Diseases like leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma are among the conditions that can be treated with BMT. Some patients with these diseases can be treated with medical chemotherapy alone. However, patients who relapse following chemotherapy are usually not curable with additional chemotherapy treatments. The only option known to provide a potential cure if this occurs is BMT. Allogenic transplants are cells collected from relatives of the patient. The transplant requires additional high intensity chemotherapy and radiation in order to destroy cancerous cells. In the process, many normal bone marrow cells are also destroyed. This is the reason for transplanting stem cells. The stem cells help to build new functioning bone marrow, red cells, white cells, and platelets. In addition, the immune cells from the donor are implanted into the recipient's body and help to fight off infection and kill remaining cancerous cells.
