Stem Cell Transplants The treatment of neurological ailments with transplant strategies that replace damaged or missing cells in the nervous system with a healthy crop is getting a push forward thanks to stem cells. These special cells can be derived from a variety of tissue types in the lab and persuaded to mass-produce fresh cell crops, according to studies. Even more encouraging, new findings in animals provide evidence that transplants of the cell batches survive and aid malfunctioning nervous systems. Add some grass seed, fertilizer and T.L.C. Voila! The once sparse and withered patch of lawn grows lush blades of green beauty.
Neuroscientists have long dreamed of treating the battered brain similar to the way a landscaper treats a battered yard. But instead of grass seeds, they envisioned planting a fresh, healthy crop of cells. Instead of the earth, they envisioned placing these cells into the nervous system. And instead of replacing grass to boost curb appeal, they envisioned replacing damaged or missing cells to treat a variety of neurological ailments.
The new work may lead to:
  • A better understanding of the biology and function of stem cells.

Setback for animal to human transplants

Pigs are genetically modified to make organs compatible with humans
By Corinne Podger of BBC Science The Council of Europe has voted for a moratorium on clinical tests of animal organ transplants into human beings. The decision will be a heavy blow to researchers working on the technique, known as "xenotransplantation". It also means the global shortage of human donor organs will have to be solved some other way. Millions of dollars have already been poured into research on transplanting animal organs into humans. Transplants postponed indefinitely until more is known Most researchers have focused on pigs, which are highly compatible with humans - and by adding some human genes to specially bred pigs, it reduces the risk that transplanted animal organs will be rejected by their human recipients. But researchers have run up against persistent problems. These involve a number of viruses which - while harmless to pigs - might pose serious health risks to humans, and possibly cause new human diseases. While not banning the idea of animal organ transplants altogether, the council of Europe voted to ban clinical tests on real patients in Europe - and wants to see that ban extended worldwide.

Traumatic Brain Injury and Transplants A traumatic brain injury from a sudden blow to the head is a major public health problem. Currently it’s a leading cause of disability among American children and young adults. Many face lasting impairments that affect their independence and daily lives. But now, thanks to recent studies, these patients’ futures may eventually improve. A line of research finds that new strategies centering on transplant techniques show promise for repairing the brain following an injury. A slip on the ice. A crash into the windshield. A collision during a football game. The scenarios are endless. Yet each year, for an estimated 1.5 million Americans, the result is the same. A traumatic brain injury. Characterized by a blow to the head, this type of injury suddenly damages the brain and its function. Survivors can experience a range of lasting impairments, including problems with speech, emotion, sensation, movement, or thinking. And due to inadequate treatments, many face the prospect of experiencing significant disabilities for the rest of their lives. Increasing research, however, now points to new strategies that may eventually improve the future of these patients. Techniques that may hold promise for traumatic brain injury (TBI) include the use of special cell transplants. Specifically, recent animal studies provide evidence that cell transplant strategies may promote the repair of an injured brain and help restore lost abilities. The new line of research is leading to:

Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplants
Bone Marrow Transplants (BMTs) and their cousin the Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplant (PBSCT) are moving from the clinical trial area to mainstream treatment for many cancers, including Hodgkin's Disease and Medium/High grade ( aggressive Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma . Transplants are used often for patients who relapse from standard chemotherapy. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has been used to treat lymphoma for over ten years, much of that time on a trial basis but now much more in the mainstream. Sometimes lymphoma becomes resistant to treatment with radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Very high doses of chemotherapy may then be used to treat the cancer. Because the high doses of chemotherapy can destroy the patient's bone marrow, marrow is taken from the bones before treatment. The marrow is then frozen, and the patient is given high-dose chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy to treat the cancer. The marrow that was taken out is then thawed and given back through a needle in a vein to replace the marrow that was destroyed. This type of transplant is called an autologous transplant. If the marrow given is taken from another person, the transplant is called an

Both Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) are the two most natural ways to transplant hair and the only ways to successfully mimic nature. And these state-of-the-art procedures are available to you, the patient, at affordable prices. You should expect nothing less from your hair restoration surgeon. By Jonathan Amos
BBC News Online science staff in Leicester An attempt is being made to use a harmless version of HIV to help prevent the rejection of transplanted hearts. The virus, which causes Aids, is dangerous precisely because it has the great ability to integrate its own genetic material into that of ordinary non-dividing cells. Researchers at Cambridge University, UK, are exploiting this feature to get genes into a donated organ that will tell the body's immune system not to attack it. If they can make the approach work, it could substantially improve the survivability of transplant patients. The technique is also being tested by other groups on brain and liver cells - major targets for the treatment of disease and in particular genetic disease. "I'd much rather HIV didn't exist but it has given us a unique property which is the capability of delivering genes into particular cells," Dr Andrew Lever told the BBC.

Doctors could soon be carrying out face transplants
A leading plastic surgeon is calling for a debate about whether face transplants should take place. Peter Butler said surgical techniques would allow the procedure to take place within the next six to nine months. But he said it was essential for a moral and ethical debate to take place before anyone underwent the operation.
