Olympic Ballroom Dancing?
I was flicking around the television remote the other night when I went past the PBS station and saw that they were airing yet another of their ballroom dancing competitions. Although I only paused for two seconds, it was long enough to hear the announcer report that ballroom dancing has been accepted as an exhibition sport by the International Olympic Committee.
Ballroom dancing as an Olympic sport? I don’t think so. It makes about as much sense as Larry King giving Rick Rockwell marriage advice.
I'm no expert on athletic endeavors, but I'm fairly sure that if it involves participants in formalwear, it's not a sport. The Olympic motto is "Swifter, Higher, Stronger." It isn't "Honey, can you help me with this cummerbund?"
On my show the next day I asked my listeners, “If ballroom dancing is in the Olympics, what else should be on the roster?” They came up with a pretty good list.

Brief Description The sports of trampolining and tumbling are as old as man, a
reflection of man's desire to defy the ever-pervading presence of gravity. Judging 5 judges mark a routine for style. They take into consideration whether
the routine has good form (tidy with straight legs and arms, head
controlled, body straight, ...), is kept in the middle of the bed and is
off a consistent height. Additionally, with voluntary routines,
difficulty (tariff) is assessed and this is added to the mark for style
(form). Style has 3 times the weighting of difficulty (it used to be
number of years ago), so the sport is very much more an aesthetic one,
and safer too. Difficulty The amount of movement a performer makes, whether somersaulting
or twisting, decides on the rating (tariff) of a move, i.e.
  • for every 90 degrees of somersault 0.1 is given
  • for every 180 degrees of twist 0.1 is given
Therefore, a double (tucked) somersault with 1/2 twist gets 0.9. At the somersault level, piked and straight moves receive a 0.1 bonus

Historic Merger Paves the Way for Trampoline in the 2000 Olympics
On January 1, 1999, the sports of Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline became part of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). The former federation for these sports, the International Trampoline Federation (FIT), voted in October to merge with FIG. This was the first time in the history of the International Olympic Committee that two international federations have merged. The merger opened the door for trampoline to become an official medal event in the 2000 Olympics. There will be 24 athletes competing in individual trampoline competition, 12 men and 12 women. Negotiations are also taking place to have synchronized trampoline included in the 2000 Olympics.
Ron Froehlich (USA), President of FIT since 1990, was unanimously elected by the FIT Congress to represent the FIT in the FIG Executive Committee and the FIG Council. Heinz Kunz (GER), was elected chairman of the first FIG Technical Commission for Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline. World Championships will be held in the uneven years. The three disciplines (synchronized trampoline, tumbling, double mini-trampoline) will be able to participate. Individual trampoline will be ineligible, due to its acceptance as an Olympic sport.

Exercise Trampoline
by: Jason Gluckman We usually think of trampolines as a fun outdoor amusement item for children. In fact, trampolines provide fantastic exercise through their ability to sustain target heart rates while remaining gentle to joints. Rebounders — also known as “mini trampolines”— have been popular for many years, both for high-aerobic fitness and for bouncing fun. Rebounding is a unique exercise in that you achieve a weightless state at the top of each jump, then land with twice the force of gravity on each bounce. Rebounding offers an exercise that can be adjusted to your fitness level, is easy on your joints and back, and can be done in your home at your convenience. Studies have shown that rebounding on a trampoline burns more calories than traditional jogging. Rebounding protects the joints from the chronic fatigue and impact delivered by exercising on hard surfaces. Exercising on a trampoline also strengthens your heart and improves your circulation. Many other benefits have been claimed, such as stimulating the flow in your lymphatic system, revitalizing vision, helping to slow the effects of aging, reducing stress, and benefiting children with learning disabilities and cystic fibrosis. Mini trampolines are particularly good for children as exercising on it, which is also fun, results in better mental performance, with keener learning processes.

Dogonadze scored 39.60 points, beating Canadian Karen Cockburn to second in 39.20. Chinese Huang Shanshan, at 18 the youngest trampoline participant in Athens, got the bronze medal in 39.00. Pre-competition favorite Irina Karavaeva of Russia , Olympic champion when trampoline made its debut in Sydney, surprisingly failed to enter the final. She was supposed to present a wonderful second routine in the qualifying with an expected difficulty of 15.3. However, she missed her landing by stepping on the side pads and fell with her back hitting the trampoline. Dogonadze, 31, ranked second after the two routines in the qualifying.

In a few years'time, the sporting world might see a new trampoline worldpower emerging in the East.
China has seen "a booming picture" in the development of the sport introduced from abroad only three years ago, predicted Zhang Jian, a leading official with the State General Administrative of Sports, who is in charge of the sport.
"The new sport has made a tremendous headway," Zhang told Xinhua, referring to what he described as "astonishing performance" of young Chinese athletes at this year's junior world championships in July in Denmark . The novice athletes bagged home three golds, four silvers and one bronze, to the surprise of such worldpower as Britain, Russia France and Australia
The unexpected results in Denmark have greatly boosted China's confidence, considering that it had resulted for so short a period of efforts, against that by the world powerhouses who had experience for more than three decades.
The nationwide registration of trampoline athletes has reached 260 since 1998, with 18 provincial and municipal sports institutes taking up the discipline, according to Gao Jian, another ranking official in charge of trampoline.

For two years, the world's best practitioners have been jumping for joy at the news that trampoline, a sort of precocious kid brother to gymnastics, has been accepted as an Olympic sport. It so happens that a Canadian trampoline program is among the most respected in the world, and easily the strongest among Western nations in a sport dominated by east Europeans. There's a chance that, when the first Olympic trampolinists fly, twist and pike their way to podium positions in Sydney in late September, a Canadian will be among them. Karen Cockburn of North York is ranked fourth on the World Cup circuit and has recently upped the ante with second- and third-place finishes in two pre-Olympic World Cups. Mathieu Turgeon of Unionville was 11th among Olympic qualifiers, but has dark-horse potential.

General History of Gymnastics
Artistic Rhythmic
Artistic Gymnastics
Gymnastics has existed for more than 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just little more than 100 years ago. During the 1800's, mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various athletic and school clubs, as well as ethnic organizations, like the Turnvereins and Sokols. Although slow to catch on in the schools, gymnastics did flourish in the Turnvereins and Sokols. It was introduced to the U.S. and its school systems in the 1830's by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Francis Lieber. The Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation, which would evolve into the International Gymnastics Federation, was formed in 1881 opening the way for international competition. In the United States, the Amateur Athletic Union assumed control of gymnastics, along with most other amateur sports, in 1883. Prior to this time gymnastics championships were held by various clubs and organizations. The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was the 1896 Olympics, where Germany virtually swept the medal parade. Gymnasts from five countries competed in events which included men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings and vault.

Olympics needs a makeover only teenagers could provide
By TONY MESSENGER Published Sunday, August 29, 2004 I’m Olympic-ed out. OK, so that’s probably not a word, but then again, who ever thought that tandem diving or team pingpong were sports, either? The problem with the Olympics isn’t drugs, it isn’t bad judging, it isn’t political shenanigans. It’s the events. My family has been pretty tuned in to this year’s staging of the worldwide sporting competition in Athens, Greece. We watched as little Carly Peterson stubbed her toe and then won gold. We watched as Michael Phelps proved his dominance in the pool time and time again. We cheered as an aging women’s soccer team showed courage under fire and held on to defeat an exciting and better Brazilian squad. Mostly, though, we determined that the Olympics needs some new blood.
