Karavaeva of Russia wins trampoline gold
Posted: Friday September 22, 2000 8:00 AM Updated: Monday November 13, 2000 2:11 PM AP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) World champion Irina Karavaeva of Russia easily won the gold medal in the inaugural Olympic women's trampoline on Friday, soaring as high as 25 feet in the air. Karavaeva's appeared to be floating as she flew through the air. Oxana Tsyhuleva of Ukraine took the silver and Karen Cockburn of Canada won the bronze. ``It's an adrenaline rush. I'm actually afraid of heights, which is really funny,'' Cockburn said. ``But it's a different feeling on the trampoline.'' Karavaeva, 25, has been winning world championships since 1994. She won the individual event at the World Cup in Vienna this year, when she also finished second in the synchronized event. World champ wins gold; Aussie takes silver
Posted: Saturday September 23, 2000 8:47 AM Updated: Monday November 13, 2000 2:00 PM William West/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Elated after he finished his routine in the men's trampoline finals, the Australian Ji Wallace threw himself into his coach's arms. Nikolay Zhuravlev scooped Wallace up and raced off the podium, almost knocking a cameraman over in the process. "I was laughing, I was crying, I was trying to look for my Mum," Wallace said after winning the silver medal Saturday in the Olympic debut of the men's trampoline. "It was just the best feeling in the world. I can't describe it." Four-time world champion Alexandre Moskalenko of Russia, who ended his three-year retirement to compete in the Olympics, took the gold. Mathieu Turgeon of Canada won the bronze. Though his best finish in international competition was a third place, Wallace was considered a longshot to win a medal. He even promised to give Zhuravlev the mountain bike he rode to practice every day if he won a medal.

Gymnastics Trampoline
History Athletes Rules Equipment ... Qualifications
The first use of a kind of trampoline dates back to 1800, according to newspapers and commemorative cards of the time. At that time, the Hughes circus in London called one of its numbers “the trampoline jump”, using this word for the first time. Since then, the word trampoline has been used in different circus performances to describe any elastic apparatus that includes jumping over obstacles or vertical jumps.

The term "gymnastics" derives from the Greek word "gymnos", meaning naked, and the sport in its modern form evolved during the 19th century. Two styles of gymnastics were in conflict - the Swedish and German systems - with German Frederick-Ludwig Khan introducing parallel bars and the horizontal bar to what had been a floor-based event. The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (Fig) was founded in 1881, and men's artistic gymnastics was included for the first time in the 1896 Olympic Games, with women joining in 1928.
