The Department of Corrections education staff, which includes more than 300 teachers, trades instructors, and support personnel, were honored at facilities throughout the state. "The educational programs within our facilities are extremely valuable," Director Patricia L. Caruso said. "I want to recognize our teachers for the great job they do in a difficult situation." Professional teaching staff provides instruction
Ed Ruesink, trade instructor, Gus Harrison Correctional Facility to nearly 12,000 prisoners daily, approximately 25 percent of the total population, at a cost per student of less than half of the average public school. More than 9,000 of these students are enrolled in academic classes and approximately 2,800 in career and technical education programs. The teachers and staff face many challenges working with the prison population. Besides the obvious security issues, many prisoners have learning disabilities. The department employs an open entry/open exit structure which means the class is constantly changing as prisoners transfer or are released. In addition, they are teaching a classroom full of students with various levels of education.

Keynote Speech
President Edward C. Sullivan
Good morning, brothers and sisters. It is great to be here in Boston, Massachusetts for our 67th Building and Construction Trades Convention.
We were disappointed, but not deterred.
Change was accomplished without threats or extortion, without careening egos or transparent grabs for power or celebrity.
From the newest apprentice to the oldest retiree, the interests of every union member weighs on every decision I am called to make.
Because when I became General President of the IUEC and then President of the Building Trades Department, I came up with the ranks, not just from the ranks.
I recount this to you because I think it serves in sharp contrast to what transpired in Chicago last month.
The disaffiliation of unions from the AFL-CIO is of deep concern to all of us. However, no individual union or group of unions can be allowed to dictate which rules will or will not apply to them. I want to thank the General Presidents who worked tirelessly behind the scenes before and during the AFL-CIO convention to reach reasonable compromise to preserve solidarity in the Building Trades. Unfortunately, reason did not prevail. Under the AFL-CIO constitution, no union is allowed to affiliate with the Building Trades Department while choosing to remain outside the AFL-CIO. That democratically established rule applies to every union.

By Bruce M. Small, P.E.
There is no reason that well-designed and well-built modern buildings should go moldy.
Walls and ceiling surfaces are usually where a building occupant first notices mold. Sometimes, it arises in cold spots where insulation is inadequate or has settled over time. Mold often shows up first as a stain from a water leak, gradually getting darker as the mold colonizes within the damp area. Inevitably, we all point at the wall or ceiling first, even if it is far removed from the actual source of moisture penetration and mold growth. Mold growth in buildings should be considered a mishap, not an inevitable consequence of age. Such mishaps are fully preventable and fully fixable. The more every contractor knows about how to prevent mold growth, the more likely we are to build good buildings that stay free of microbial contamination.

Building a Future in KC's Construction Trades

To prepare for the competition, middle-schoolers work in teams of two or three to design buildings, draw scaled plans, estimate costs and construct three-dimensional foam core models. No ginger-bread houses or card castles; this is big-time professional. On March 4, the UMKC Center for Construction Excellence ushered more than 3,000 of the area's young and pliable minds into the Fifth Annual Middle School Design-Build Competition. It was held at the MCC Business and Technology Center in Kansas City, Mo. The Center for Construction Excellence's event grew as a result of research showing that students stop choosing math, science and English courses as they move into high school. "By demonstrating to students how these subjects are used in the real world of construction, it is hoped that they will continue to take upper-level math, science, English and technology classes and become better- prepared to enter the world of work or college," explains Dr. Janet Paulson-Smith, the Center's executive director. More than 100 construction, engineering, contracting firms and labor unions sponsored the event. Construction spending averages almost $700 billion per year in the U.S. and is the country's second largest employer, with over seven million workers in the industry. However, govern-ment reports confirm the construction workforce is dwindling. Fewer high school and college students are interested, or have the necessary skills, to pursue the field. Robin Floyd, marketing manager at Turner Construction Co., explains the need for a new batch of bright minds: "In the next decade, we'll lose a lot of skilled workers to retirement," she says. "Young people just aren't encouraged into construction. They may think of it as 'unglamorous,' get-your-hands-dirty. Where the truth is, there's much more to this industry than swinging a hammerthere are countless professional, lucrative opportunities."
