On the daily commuter train to Boston each morning, the most sought-after spots are the ones at the center of the car, where two benches face each other over a small table. On this table the conscientious commuters can compute they pull their laptops out of their valises, set them down, and go to work. To see the disappointment in their eyes when all the table seats have been taken is to realize the extent to which computer technologies have become necessities in many occupations. To avoid disappointment, and to free the table seats for the more computer-stressed of the suburbanites, I just read the paper on the train and leave my laptop in its case. But I watch with interest as the lawyers, bankers, researchers, teachers and marketers from my section of the suburbs fire up their PowerBooks and Pentiums for the extra half-hour of work on the way to work. Today I saw...

E-Mail Us SCHOOL HISTORY W arren Fox Kaynor Regional Vocational-Technical School was established in 1953, and is located in the city of Waterbury on approximately twenty acres. The building size is approximately 158,000 square feet. The current student population for the 1999-2000 school year presently consists of 219 females and 443 males for a total of 662 students from a rich variety of ethnic backgrounds. W.F. Kaynor Regional Vocational-Technical School continues to provide the student population and the community with additional services such as: Special Education Programming, Remedial Reading, Math Lab, Bilingual Education Programming, and counseling services. Kaynor has a well staffed Guidance department, a full time School Psychologist, a part-time Social Worker, and a full time Registered Nurse.     Auto and Consumer Mechanics Staff Haasakker, D. Thomas, T. Helena High is extremely proud of the comprehensive program in Vocational Trades which is available to students. Each year this department receives recognition for the high caliber of teaching and learning it demonstrates. The major units of the program are welding, building trades, auto mechanics, drafting. Each unit provides basic introductory level instruction as well as advanced instruction capable of providing job-entry level skills and knowledge. Students are encouraged to explore one or more of these areas to see if a potential exits for vocational education in their future. Each of the courses in this program is an experience - based course. Students learn by doing! But students in the program will be quick to tell you that it's not all grease, coveralls, and sawdust. The instructors are all well-versed in the theory and practice involved in their special areas. So classroom lectures and demonstrations are often used as teaching tools when important theories, principles, and procedures are a must for complete understanding of the subject.

    Ed Lawrence began working in the collision repair industry with his father when he was fifteen years old. Today he is an auto body instructor at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, where he's taught since 1977. Many people, especially students, think college is the only option when it comes to finding rewarding, professional opportunities. Vocational schools like Madison Park aren't seen as a serious option for the development of a young person's future. As a result, so many career opportunities in vocational schools become secondary choices or a last resort for many young people; they may discover their SAT scores aren't good enough, or feel they are not strong enough academically to handle the challenge of most of today's colleges and universities. Usually that's when they begin to explore career options in professional trades. I don't want to blame the guidance counselors. In my school we have one guidance counselor for our academy, one person trying to be available to give academic and career advice, or personal guidance, for six or seven hundred kids. It's fairly futile when you think about it. But these kids should have had more help thinking about career choices and figuring out what kinds of classes and skills they'd need to succeed in our courses long before they came into our building.

    Step Two: Collaborative Learning in the Technology Classroom
    Many female students lack confidence in the classroom and this negatively impacts their learning ability. There are several reasons for this: first, overall, male students have more experience with technology, especially hands-on labs; second, male students tend to boast of their accomplishments while females tend to think that they are doing poorly even when they are doing well; third, male students tend to dominate in classroom discussions and lab activities.
    Technology instructors can overcome these factors by using collaborative group methods in the classroom designed to increase student learning, interaction and support of each other. Some examples of these group methods are: 1) grade students in teams as well as individually; 2) put female students in positions of leadership in the classroom; 3) assign students to teams or pairs rather than leaving it up to them to pick their partners; 4) have female students work together in labs during the beginning of the semester; 5) enlist the help of whiz kids with the teaching of their fellow students, providing them with a constructive outlet for their talents.

    TEACHING
    The provisional trades certificate is one of several types of certificates issued by the Nebraska Department of Education. It is issued to persons who have a special skill, usually of a vocational nature (not usually available on a regular teaching certificate) which needs to be included in the school program of offerings. The certificate must carry the name of the area of specialization - this is called the 'endorsement'. The Provisional Trades Certificate allows teaching only in the area of endorsement . Endorsements are available in a virtually unlimited number of trade areas.
    Renewal
    The Provisional Trades Certificate is issued only upon the request of a school system. Therefore, the first step in making any application for a Provisional Trades Certificate is to contact the office of the local school system and inquire if it is employing persons with your specializations area of endorsement to teach. The requirements for the first issuance of the Provisional Trades Certificate, regardless of endorsement, are: Complete the Application for a Nebraska Certificate Form 2) Pay the nonrefundable prescribed statutory application fee 3) Submit, with the application, a written request for the issuance of the certificate from the Superintendent of the employing school system or from the governing body of the school system or from the personnel director of the employing school system.

    By Sally Hicks Few scholarly books begin with heartfelt thanks to an auto-repair shop owner. But in the foreword of her book, Pox Americana: The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775-82 , Duke history professor Elizabeth Fenn gives major credit for the work and, indeed, her career as a historian to Wayne Clayton of Cross Creek BP and Auto Center on Guess Road in Durham. Why? He was a great boss. If it hadn't been for Clayton's flexibility, Fenn said, she couldn't have left her eight-year career as an automobile mechanic to finish her Ph.D. and to write the book about smallpox that would make her something of a media star in the aftermath of Sept. 11. Fenn, who goes by Lil, begins work this fall as an assistant professor in the history department, completing a circle that began when she got her undergraduate history degree from Duke in 1981. She headed off to Yale to do graduate work in early American history, but after finishing her doctoral coursework she abruptly changed directions. She moved back to Hillsborough and, after writing a book on North Carolina history with her now-husband, Duke history professor Peter Wood, decided to enroll at Durham Technical Community College to learn auto mechanics. "I was a case study in downward mobility," she said with a laugh. She said she can't really explain why she made the shift: "I could probably spend years in psychotherapy trying to understand why I did what I did."

Tourism (Sales and Business Operations) Each of these qualifications contains lists of competencies that a student must demonstrate to obtain training certification. Students are encouraged to complement their studies by engaging in Structured Workplace Learning. Students aiming for direct entry to university, TAFE or employment benefit by studying Vocational Education. All students at Thornlie Senior High School are engaged in some form of Vocational Education through their English subject whether through Senior English, TEE English or English Literature. However, students may elect to specialize in a particular industry area by studying one of the following.
    Automotive
    VET is a practical area designed to give students the opportunity to experience aspects of working within different automotive contexts. The course focuses on the application of current automotive technology in the automotive industry.     The Marketing Education Program has existed at Ames High School since 1958 and is known throughout the state as one of the top marketing programs. The DECA program consists of 3 parts: class, work experience, and DECA chapter activities. Students in the program gain valuable class and work experience in retail and marketing-related careers. Students in the program register for 2 courses:
    #6051Marketing Education Class(1 credit/semester) #6071Marketing Education Co-op(2 credits/semester) Students in the program earn 3 credits per semester: 1 credit for the marketing/work related class and 2 credits for the work experience. Students in the program must be employed an average of 15-20 hours per week during the school year. Employers and the marketing teacher work closely to monitor work experiences. Students are also expected to participate in DECA chapter activities ( a co-curricular activity), which includes civic, social, fund-raising, conference and competitive event activities. Students submit an application form to Mrs. Schmaltz. Interviews are completed during the spring semester. Cost: $40 (national, state and local DECA dues).
