Trades Induction Program
Outline of program The program offers many benefits to students. In addition to experiencing the exciting world of trades, they get a taste of postsecondary education by attending classes at a college. The co-op placement increases their skills, gives them experience, and prepares them for the world of work. Success stories Nick MacGillivray and Andrew MacIntosh participated in TIP in its first year. Both have been hired by the companies at which they had their co-op placements and continue to work towards qualification in their chosen trades. Nick signed up for the program knowing that he wanted to be an automotive service technician. A Grade 12 student who had taken all the automotive classes offered at his school, he was highly motivated and displayed an exemplary work ethic during both the college and the co-op components of the program. Always finding something that needed to be done, Nick impressed his boss at Miller-Hughes Ford with his initiative. As a result, he was hired on a full-time basis by the company last September and is gaining experience in quick maintenance and cleaning. He continues to be an enthusiastic learner and hopes to begin an apprenticeship as soon as possible.

... Where to Find More Trades/Apprenticeships An entry into the labour market that is often overlooked by many students is apprenticeship to the trades. It is a system of training, incorporating on-the-job learning with short periods of formal or in-school learning, leading to certification or licensing in the trades. Formal exams are required at several levels throughout the training process. In general, trades across Canada are regulated by the apprenticeship branch of each provincial government. About 290 trades are covered, but each province or territory has its own designated trades that are provincially/territorially regulated. Troops to Teachers Program Description Overview
The Alaska Troops To Teachers (TTT) Program, is designed to assist qualified military personnel make the transition from the armed services to service in the classrooms of our schools. The program helps connect individuals with information, institutions and the people that can help participants navigate then meet state certification requirements and ultimately find a teaching position. As of January 2002, over 4,000 Troops-to-Teachers participants have been hired nationally in the public schools through the program. The Troops-to-Teachers Program was initially established in 1994 to address force restructuring in the military by assisting retiring and separating active duty military personnel transition to new careers in public education. The military drawdown is over and the program has been redefined to address the actual and projected nationwide teacher shortage. Program Information
The program helps individuals by connecting them with information, people and institutions that can help participants meet state certification requirements and ultimately find a teaching position.

Integrating academic and career tech curriculum is one of the primary objectives of the Carl Perkins Vocational Education Act (1998 reauthorization) and a guiding principle of the School to Work Opportunities Act. It has proven to be an invaluable approach to teaching, and educators across the nation have experienced firsthand how the application of interdisciplinary and team teaching enhances student achievement. Yet, with all of these positives, there are still stumbling blocks in the process. How do we make it work?
Team teaching is one approach to bridge the gap, and (from a CTE standpoint) fortify work skills curriculum. This initiative is on the rise but is still suffering some growing pains.

There is an old adage that goes something like this: Tell me; I hear it. Show me; I learn it. Involve me; I comprehend it.
Learning from a textbook, with traditional lecture and note taking, is necessary to some degree in any subject. Physics is no exception to the rule. However, when the focus in a course is on only lecture and regurgitation of notes and information, the students don?t truly learn the material.
I teach at a technical high school. This school differs from a traditional high school in the sense that students learn trades at the same time that they learn their academics. Programs such as automotive technology, carpentry, computer electronics, baking and cosmetology are available to the students at my school.
Beyond the Book
I teach a Principles of Technology course, and I like the fact that it is not designed specifically for the technical high school. It also is effective in motivating students to learn physics in a traditional high school setting. This course allows teaching beyond the book in many different ways. The three main ways in which I teach outside the book involve the labs that come with the program, student projects and a thematic lesson that will be the focus of this article.

Training for a career in Professional Hairdressing
