Others specialize on the engine of the car, performing both routine maintenance and any necessary repair work. Hi, my name is David and I'm 16 years old. I lived in Bushwick for 16 years, going on 17. My most favorite talent is singing. I took Martial Arts classes for 5-6 years and the last belt I got was purple. I go to Automotive High School. They teach me about automotive trades and I'm majoring in Business and Technology.
October, 2000 Interesting fact: I'm a good singer. My favorite web-site is: www.teenchat.com Story Description: I did my story on my school, Automotive High School. It's a vocational school that teaches you the basics and specialties in automotive trades. You get different classes every time you move up a grade. And if you don't want to take up automechanics, you can take business classes. In my story, I talk to my mom, my principal, my teacher and others, and I look back on how my love of cars started by working with my dad on his car when I was little. Mentor: Edith Updike is a print journalist, with radio experience. Edith covers diversity issues - as they relate to employment, and has also written about entrepreneurs and the auto industry.

The Excel Institute By Steve Lilienthal
March 5, 2004 The Excel Institute is located on an out-of-the-way street, more like a dead-end alley, in Washington's northeast quadrant. But the young man or woman who graduates from the program will be able to travel the fast track to success. Excel, a non-profit-training school in automotive mechanics, fills an important need at a time when the secondary educational system in the District of Columbia and in many other school districts throughout the nation has taken a dead-end detour by emphasizing academic programs and college at the expense of promoting vocational trades and offering intensive, up-to-date training. The Excel Institute is also a place that tries to provide a fix to the failures and unpleasant realities that stem from the breakdown of important institutions, such as the family and the educational system, in the nation's capital. Many Excel students enter the program with poor reading and math skills. Those students who work hard, apply themselves, and succeed by becoming certified as a mechanic will find their job skills in high demand. No longer does the stereotype of the unsophisticated "grease monkey" apply to the vocation.

  • Apprenticeship is a formal method of training for a skilled trade that combines on-the-job-training (paid full-time employment) with related classroom instruction. The skills learned provide the basis for a rewarding career. May/June 2005 Career-tech options: Formula of success by Rick Brewer Rick Brewer is in his third term as a board member in Delavan CUSD 703 and is chairman of the Career and Technical Education Department for Pekin CHSD 303. While support for career education programs may have waned recently, Pekin CHSD 303 maintains those programs are a major component of student success. The CTE department at Pekin High School serves approximately 1,000 students each day, or nearly half of its 2,300 students. Classes offer opportunities for nearly all levels of achievement and ability, ranging from high honors to special needs. Time-tested programs experience a wide range of success, using reality sensitive strategies to boost student transition from high school to the world of work and a variety of post-secondary education options. The 2003 Pekin High School attendance rate (96.9 percent) is higher than the state average, the graduation rate has increased and our dropout rate has decreased. Vocational studies are a key component to these trends. "Even with decreases in state and federal funding, our district considers vocational programs to be a critical asset to the quality of education that we provide," says Kenneth Schwab, district superintendent.

Career Opportunities In The Motor Vehicle Industry
Young men and women on leaving school can choose a variety of trades in the motor vehicle repair industry. They can become an automotive electrician, motor mechanic, motor cycle mechanic, brake mechanic, panel beater, spray painter, body maker, exhaust repairer, front end specialist, liquefied petroleum gas mechanic, natural gas mechanic, radiator repairer or transmission specialist. Also young men and women have the opportunity of eventually owning their own business or developing a career through a large establishment, such as a dealership. Those who develop managerial or marketing skills also have extensive career prospects. The trades are covered by the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Authority (MVRIA) licensing system in NSW. Any person in these trades must be an apprentice or a tradesman certificated by the Authority, so there is some degree of security. Other non-licensed trades are vehicle trimming and spare parts interpreter. Authority spokesperson Colin Brown said a steady flow of girls were entering the repair industry as apprentices. "They are mainly in the motor mechanic trade although reports show many girls display talents in the spray painting and auto electrician trades," Mr Brown said.
