82. The History Of Track And Field. Where Running Started.

Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us was this how track and field started the origins and facts about running and track How it all began The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals. Other evidence, both literary and archaeological, suggests that the games may have existed at Olympia much earlier than this date, perhaps as early as the 10th or 9th century BC. A series of bronze tripods have been found at Olympia, some of which appear to be dated at about the 9th century BC, and it has also been suggested that these tripods may in fact be prizes for some of the early events at Olympia. The marathon was not an event of the ancient Olympic games. The marathon is a modern event that was first introduced in the Modern Olympic Games of 1896 in Athens, a race from Marathon - northeast of Athens - to the Olympic Stadium, a distance of 42.195 kilometers. The race commemorates the run of Pheidippides, an ancient "day-runner" who carried the news of the Persian landing at Marathon of 490 BC to Sparta (a distance of 149 miles) in order to enlist help for the battle. According to the fifth century BC ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides delivered the news to the Spartans the next day. The distance of the modern marathon was standardized as 26 miles 385 yards or 42,195 kilometers in 1908 when the Olympic Games were held in London. The distance was the exact measurement between Windsor Castle, the start of the race, and the finish line inside White City Stadium

New Zealand will have two athletes in finals at the Paralympic track and field on Tuesday night. Tim Prendergast won through to the last eight of the 1500 metres in his classification on Monday night and on Tuesday morning another medallist from the Sydney Games joined him in the finals. Matt Slade won his heat of the 200 metres in the third-fastest time of the day. Slade, who won a silver medal in this event four years ago, is confident of running faster in the final and of being among the medals again. Meanwhile, there's been an upset in the wheelchair rugby with second seeds Canada beaten by Great Britain in extra time. The Wheelblacks went down to the USA in a tight match 35-32. British athletics is set to come under the spotlight despite the Olympic team ending the games ranked the third best country in the world. Only the United States and Russia finished ahead of Britain in the track and field medals table but the two golds won by Kelly Holmes and the unexpected victory of the 100 metres relay team skew it.

Farewell to Athens
Every Olympic Games provides us with defining moments. Some are obvious - like Cathy Freeman's golden run in Sydney and Muhammad Ali's lighting of the cauldron in Atlanta. Others are a matter of personal preference. Athens was no different. In almost every sport there were memories to cherish. From the feats of Ian Thorpe Michael Phelps and Jodie Henry in the pool to unforgettable victories by Kelly Holmes and Hicham El Guerrouj on the track, every winner had a story to tell. And so did most of the losers. Losers like Jana Pittman , Wilson Kipketer and Alex Popov, who weren't losers at all, but were winners without gold medals. For the Greeks, these Games were a triumph. Not because they were the best ever, but because in the main, they went without a hitch. Because, despite the doubters, they opened on schedule, and because - perhaps against all odds in today's world - for a little more than two weeks they recaptured the spirit of the ancient Olympics. The centrepiece of these Games was the thoroughly modern stadium with its Santiago Calatrava-designed roof.

Drug Probe Threatens to Overwhelm Track Trials
By Amy Shipley Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 9, 2004; Page A01 SACRAMENTO, July 8 The U.S. Olympic track and field trials are usually considered a preview of coming attractions, an opportunity for the nation's elite athletes to become household names as they attempt to qualify for the Summer Games. But by the time the trials end next Sunday, an unfolding drug scandal may make some of the U.S. stars famous for another reason. On the same day three-time Olympian Regina Jacobs could run in the final of the 1,500 meters for a chance to go to the Athens Games, she is also scheduled to appear at an arbitration hearing because of a positive test for a designer steroid. Calvin Harrison, a relay gold medalist four years ago in Sydney, was prepared stop off in Denver on his way to the trials for a similar arbitration hearing before a last-minute postponement.
One-hundred meter world record holder Tim Montgomery has become ensnared in BALCO investigation.

Ethel Catherwood Herstory 1974) and Fanny "Bobbie" Rosenfeld Herstory 1979) were two members of the Canadian women's track and field team competing at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam. Those games marked the first time women were given the status of official Olympic competitors. The six-woman Canadian track team broke world records and earned two gold, two silver, one bronze, and a fourth- and a fifth-place finish; many spectators felt a judging error had "robbed" the team of a third gold medal. As a team, they amassed 34 points, easily ahead of the second place team. But as The Globe and Mail reported on 8 August 1928, Those opposing the retention of the women's events in the Olympics were headed by a country whose women athletes won the present Olympic's women's track and field meetCanada In the debate over whether to continue to include women in the Games, arguments against doing so suggested both historical appropriateness (women did not compete in the ancient Greek Olympics) and the continuing debate over whether or not physical competition was "injurious" to women. The final vote favoured women's inclusion, with one exception: the 800-metre race for women was withdrawn, and was not reintroduced until 1960.
