WebPosted Wed, 20 Jul 2005 13:05:34 EDT CBC Sports Two Olympic champ ions, Great Britain's Kelly Holmes and Sweden's Christian Olsson, have pulled out of next month's world track and field championships due to nagging injuries. Holmes has not recovered from an Achilles injury sustained earlier this summer, while Olsson is still recovering from foot surgery. Kelly Holmes won't be competing at next month's world track and field championships. (AP File Photo) Regarded as Great Britain's best female middle distance runner ever, Holmes won gold medals in the 800 metres and the 1,500 metres at last year's Athens Olympics. Olsson won gold in the triple jump in Athens and at the 2003 world track and field championships in Paris.

Setting records on the track, field and in the stands, the 2000 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials will be remembered as one of the most exciting meets ever held in the United States. The 2000 Trials featured one world record, five U.S. records and 10 meet records. Stacy Dragila cleared 15 feet, 2_ inches in the pole vault, breaking her own world record of 15-1_, set earlier in the season. Dragila set her world mark on the final day of competition, when a crowd of 24,072 packed Hornet Stadium. The largest crowd of the Trials also saw Gail Devers, the two-time Olympic champion in the 100-meter dash, break her own U.S. record in the 100 hurdles, clocking 12.33 seconds. Adam Nelson won one of the greatest shot put competitions ever held. Nelson (72-7), C.J. Hunter (71-9) and Andy Bloom (70-10_ ) all recorded their best marks in the sixth and final round. The ground shook as the behemoths tackled each other in joy.

On the Trail of Pheidippides: Olympic Track and Field at Athens, 1896 and 2004
Citius, Altius, Fortius. Faster, Higher, Strongerthis is the motto of the modern Olympics. The true meaning of this simple phrase is dramatically illustrated by comparing track and field events of the first modern Olympic Games of Athens, 1896, with the same events in progress now at Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Athens, 108 years and 5 months after it all began.

By Skip Cleaver Posted Thursday, 26 August, 2004 Track and field competitions have been at the core of the Olympic movement from the earliest beginnings, ancient and modern. There are just 15 events that have been included in every modern Olympics. And 12 of those are in track and field. Competitions of speed, strength, endurance, and athletic skill were always at the heart of the Games. Track and field events, and especially the Marathon, are for many the essential core of the Olympic Games. Legend of the Marathon The Marathon was invented in Greece for those games of 1896, tracking the path of the legendary Pheidippides from the Plains of Marathon to the center of Athens to announce the Athenian victory over the Persians in 490 B.C. Spiridon Louis, a 24-year-old from the Greek village of Amarousion, won the very first Marathon in 1896, running in the footsteps of Pheidippides and other ancient couriers from Marathon to Athens.

A top-25 national finish last season and head coaching assignment with the United States World Championship squad this summer has Sandy Fowler, in her eighth season as Alabama’s head coach, smiling quite a bit these days. She’s also smiling because she knows that last season’s success, which included a 22nd place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championship, will carry over into this season and continued riches for the Crimson Tide. “We definitely had a good year,” Fowler said of the Tide’s 2004 campaign. “But I think it’s the beginning of bigger and better things for this program. I’m very excited about this year and where we can go with this team.” Success has come largely due to her philosophy of fielding a balanced squad, with an increasingly strong sprint, distance and field program. She is also smiling because her athletes are not only climbing the ladder in the very tough Southeastern Conference and on the national level, they are also climbing the ladder in the classroom, earning Academic All-SEC honors in increasing numbers, including 14 student-athletes last season.
