Deadly Skies: Canada's Most Destructive Tornadoes
WHAT:
The swiftly moving air begins to spin like a top as it moves. If it spins fast enough, a funnel forms. When the funnel touches the ground, it is referred to as a tornado.
DAMAGE:
According to Environment Canada, there are an average of 80 tornadoes each year in Canada, causing two deaths and injuring 20. Damage runs into the millions.
Tornadoes are measured in Canada using the Fujita scale, developed by Chicago researcher Dr. T. Theodore Fujita. The classifications are as follows:
TORNADO GAME PLAN:
According to most weather authorities, including Environment Canada, your best option in the event of a tornado is to head for your basement. If you don't have one, get in a closet or small room near the center of the building, away from windows or doors. Environment Canada suggests getting into the bathtub and covering yourself with a mattress. Otherwise, get underneath a sturdy piece of furniture which can help shield you from falling or flying debris.

    Tornadoes:
As defined by the Glossary of Meteorology (Huschke 1959), a tornado is . More recently, researchers are adding the qualifier that the violently rotating column of air be in contact with the ground otherwise, it is referred to as a funnel cloud . A good example of the distinction is made using this photograph discussion on this topic
    Tornado Safety:
The safest place to be during a tornado is underground in a storm shelter. Few have access to such shelter so any location below ground level is advised, like a basement or crawl space. If you cannot get below ground then interior closets and bathrooms are the next best place because of the better reinforcing wall structures. If you have a mobile home, you are likely in more danger by staying inside the home than by leaving it completely. If you are caught outdoors during a tornado, try to get indoors following the above advice unless your only option is a mobile home. If no indoor/underground options exist, then you are safest when you are lying as low as possible in a ditch. Contrary to popular belief, you are not safe IS possible exception Storm Prediction Center safety page
    Additional Tornado Info:
Tornado Alley . I borrow these few sentences to illustrate some questions still perplexing the best researchers I know: The source of rotation in some tornadoes appears to be preexisting vortices near the ground above where convective storms are growing; in others, the source seems to be linked to the mesocyclone. Does the mesocyclone itself descend to the ground and intensify to become the tornado, or does it trigger events near the ground that create tornadoes from other sources of rotation? Can it do both?

    January 21, 1999
Web posted at: 11:59 a.m. EST (0459 GMT) SEARCY, Arkansas (CNN) A series of tornadoes raced across Arkansas on Thursday night, killing four people and wiping out a fire department in a rural area northeast of Little Rock. Numerous injuries were reported across the state. The twisters were spawned by a rapidly moving weather front heading east across the Ohio Valley and the South toward the Gulf Coast. The storm also brought baseball-sized hail, powerful winds and lightning. Officials said three people were killed just outside Searcy, about 45 miles northeast of Little Rock, when a tornado ripped through the area. In the small farm community of Joy, the fire department was destroyed. "It was blown completely away," said Lt. Stan Rogers of the Searcy Fire Department.

    I. Historical Perspectives
When Europeans first came to the U.S., they began to encounter tornadoes, almost certainly for the first time in their lives. They were astounded by their ferocity and frequency here in North America. Pummeling their villages and farms without warning, they inflicted terrible death tolls. As settlers pushed west, they encountered tornadoes with higher frequency and at higher intensity than in the Eastern states, but of course the sparse populations offset that to some extent. With the slow but steady growth of populations at risk, by the early parts of the 20th century, tornadoes were exacting a substantial price from the largely agrarian Midwest. If we look at the annual tornado fatality totals over the long haul, what we see is a pretty spotty record. Almost certainly, the death tolls prior to the 20th century are underestimates. As Grazulis (1993) has noted, the native Americans, slaves, and other non-caucasians killed in tornadoes were almost never included in the fatality figures - largely as a result of racial bigotry. What's somewhat intriguing is that when the figures are smoothed to minimize the impact of the interannual variations, some pretty clear trends emerge. Note the decline in tornado fatalities beginning sometime after the turn of the century and continuing (with some fluctuations) to the present.

    Tornadoes
    Emergency Information
    • The best protection during a tornado is in an interior room on the lowest level of a building, preferably a basement or storm cellar. • Tornadoes strike with incredible velocity. Wind speeds may approach 300 miles per hour. These winds can uproot trees and structures and turn harmless objects into deadly missiles, all in a matter of seconds. Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable to tornadoes. • Injury or deaths most often occur when buildings collapse, people are hit by flying objects, or people are caught in a car. • Tornadoes are most destructive when they touch ground. Normally, a tornado will stay on the ground for no more than 20 minutes; however, one tornado can touch ground several times in different areas.
    Danger Zones
North Carolina has around 15 tornadoes a year. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas are the states at greatest risk.

Twisters ripped through downtown Nashville Latest developments: April 17, 1998 Web posted at: 7:05 a.m. EDT (1105 GMT) NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) Southerners who survived deadly tornadoes are trying to recover from the devastation. A long and fierce line of storms killed at least 11 people Thursday, injured hundreds more and caused severe damage throughout the South. At least two tornadoes ripped through the heart of Nashville Thursday afternoon, damaging at least 300 buildings, including the State Capitol, and injuring more than 100 people. Despite a path of damage six miles long, there were no reported fatalities in Nashville. Two traffic deaths, initially blamed on the weather, were determined not to be related to the storm. Vice President Al Gore arrived in Tennessee late Thursday and will tour Nashville and other areas affected by the tornadoes on Friday.
