Click the Map for a more detailed view. Why do some thunderstorms produce violent tornadoes while most do not? The answer is related to the wind . If the wind changes direction and gets stronger with height, it can cause a column of air to rotate. Think of a rotating column of air about 2 miles high and half a mile wide. Suddenly a thunderstorm updraft pulls this column upward. Now it's 3 miles high and a few hundred yards wide. When this happens the air spins up. Sit in a swivel chair and hold your arms out. Now have someone spin you around. As you spin bring your hands to your lap. Be careful doing this! The scientific term for this spinning up is conservation of angular momentum. It is this process that can take 50 mph winds and turn them into a tornado with 200 mph winds! Everything has to come together just right for a tornado to occur. More tornadoes occur in the United States than any other place in the world. Alabama ranks 4th in the nation for the number of killer tornadoes, and the risk of tornadoes is higher in the Tennessee Valley. Texas and Oklahoma have many more tornadoes than we do, here in the Tennessee Valley, ours tend to be more deadly. The worst tornado disaster occurred on March 21, 1932. Over 300 people were killed in the state during 2 waves of tornadoes that day.

    What causes a tornado?
A tornado isn't likely to take you to Munchkinland, as it did in "The Wizard of Oz," but a strong one can destroy buildings and create a damage path a mile wide. Its wind speeds can top 300 miles per hour. Tornadoes occur just about everywhere in the world, from India to Australia, and all over the United States, but the most famous and active breeding ground for tornadoes is Tornado Alley. It extends from Texas up through Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska to the Dakotas. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico clashes with cold air from the north and fuels storms that form there. Tornadoes can form any time of year, but many occur in the stormy spring, when these warm and cold air masses collide. Storms often are triggered where two different kinds of air masses meet, such as dry and moist air masses, or cold and warm air masses. We don't know all the reasons a tornado forms, but scientists have a general idea of the weather ingredients that need to come together.

Web posted at: 7:57 a.m. EDT (1157 GMT)
(CNN) Powerful storms and tornadoes carved a path of destruction across the Midwest and Plains, destroying homes and other buildings in several states before moving east early Friday. Richard Urkoski was at work when a tornado blew the roof off his home in North Bend, Nebraska, and caved in the front walls. He later walked around the demolished house, picking up photographs off the floor. "I guess it didn't hit me until I came home and saw it," he said. A tornado struck a five-block area in the eastern Nebraska town Thursday, damaging 14 homes and leveling one that was under construction. No injuries were reported. Helga Garay's car was smashed by tree limbs outside her residence in Morse Bluff, south of North Bend.

    Tornado!
Although tornadoes occur in many parts of the world, these destructive forces of nature are found most frequently in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains during the spring and summer months. In an average year, 800 tornadoes are reported nationwide, resulting in 80 deaths and over 1,500 injuries. A tornado is defined as a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. The most violent tornadoes are capable of tremendous destruction with wind speeds of 250 mph or more. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long. Once a tornado in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, carried a motel sign 30 miles and dropped it in Arkansas!

T ornadoes can occur in many parts of the world, however, they are most frequent during the Spring in the central United States. Each year an average of 800-1000 tornadoes are reported nationwide resulting in many deaths and injuries. Research at NSSL is focused on gaining a better understanding of tornado development and the environment in which tornadoes form. This is accomplished through theoretical studies, field programs, and radar algorithm development and testing. The resulting knowledge and technology is then provided to the National Weather Service where it is put to use in the form of forecasts, watches, and warnings to the public. A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending between, and in contact with, a cloud and the surface of the earth. Tornadoes are generally spawned by thunderstorms, though they have been known to occur without the presence of lightning. The stronger tornadoes attain an awe-inspiring intensity, with wind speeds that exceed 200 mph and in extreme cases may approach 300 mph. What are some of the myths about tornadoes?

    The Topic:
Tornadoes Easier - Tornadoes are violent, whirling funnel-shaped windstorms that usually travel over land. When a tornado touches the ground, it can cause great destruction in its narrow path. Harder - Tornadoes, often called twisters, are the most violent of thunderstorms. A tornado over a body of water is called a waterspout. Tornadoes occur when a warm, humid air mass meets with a cool, dry air mass. This collision sometimes results in a powerful, swirling column of air. The tornado's swirling winds can exceed 300 mph. Tornadoes cause much damage by this sheer force of wind, but they also have a strong updraft that can lift and carry objects. Fortunately, most tornadoes are relatively weak; only a few are devastating.

    Storms, possible tornadoes rake Mississippi
A satellite map shows the storm system that brought severe weather to Mississippi Friday and Saturday. JACKSON, Mississippi (CNN) Emergency response teams Saturday checked on the damage in a small Mississippi town south of Jackson where an early morning storm may have sent a tornado spinning through a subdivision. "We have some damage in the Byram area of Hinds County," National Weather Service spokesman Dough Butts said. "We expect to have reports from the storm survey crews this afternoon." County emergency officials were on the scene as well. Downed trees and power lines initially hampered their efforts to reach the site. Larry Fisher of the Hinds County Emergency Operations Center said some homes were reported damaged by falling trees and other homes were flooded. The center had received no reports of injuries, he said. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the area early Saturday. The forecast called for more storms with possible tornadoes throughout the day as a front stalled over the region.

February 23, 1998 Web posted at: 11:25 p.m. EST (0425 GMT) KISSIMMEE, Florida (CNN) An 18-month-old baby boy sucked out of his father's arms was one of at least 36 people killed when a deadly round of tornadoes tore through central Florida late Sunday and early Monday. About 250 people were injured, according to state officials. The federal government on Monday declared the area eligible for federal disaster aid. President Clinton plans to visit the damaged areas Wednesday. "This is the worst day of tornadoes ever to hit central Florida," said Gailee Cardwell, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Emergency Management. The tornadoes hit four counties: Osceola, Orange, Seminole and Volusia. A L S O : Detailed Map of Central Florida

One of the hardest hit areas was the Ponderosa Campground in Osceola County north of Kissimmee. The campground was unusually full because of an annual rodeo and the opening of baseball spring training. The campground is located behind a stadium used by the Houston Astros for spring training.
