Tornadoes cause severe damage in southwest Georgia
February 14, 2000 Web posted at: 6:10 a.m. EST (1110 GMT) Officials have reported at least three deaths in Mitchell county this morning after a possible tornado touched down in southwest Georgia county about 1 a.m., the American Red Cross said. American Red Cross spokeswoman Robin Dotson said the tornado may have been the same one that touched down earlier on the Colquitt-Mitchell county line. Early reports indicate Mitchell County was the hardest hit.

Tornadoes What Is A Tornado? A tornado is a violent windstorm characterized by a twisting, funnel-shaped cloud. It is spawned by a thunderstorm (or sometimes as a result of a hurricane) and produced when cool air overrides a layer of warm air, forcing the warm air to rise rapidly. The damage from a tornado is a result of the high wind velocity and wind-blown debris. Tornado season is generally March through August, although tornadoes can occur at any time of year. They tend to occur in the afternoons and evenings: over 80 percent of all tornadoes strike between noon and midnight. When a tornado threatens, individuals need to have a safe place to go and time to get there. Even with advances in meteorology, warning times may be short or sometimes not possible. Lives are saved when individuals receive and understand the warning, know what to do, and know the safest place to go. What Should I Do?

Governor: Low casualty toll 'miracle'
Latest developments: April 17, 1998 Web posted at: 2:56 a.m. EDT (0656 GMT) NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) At least two tornadoes ripped through the heart of Nashville Thursday afternoon, damaging at least 300 buildings, including the State Capitol, and injuring more than 100 people. A L S O : Path of the tornadoes CNN meteorologist Valerie Voss points out the tornado vortex signature on the radar Regional radar image for Tennessee "Considering the severity of the storm, it could have been a whole lot worse," said Tennessee Gov. Don Sundquist, who declared Nashville a disaster area. "The fact that we didn't have a whole lot of fatalities is a miracle really." Vice President Al Gore arrived in Tennessee late Thursday and will tour Nashville and other areas affected by the tornadoes on Friday. "On behaf of President Clinton, I want to express deep sorrow at the damage done by the horrible tornadoes that touched down in western Tennessee, middle Tennessee, and Waynesboro."

Photograph by: Marshall They can be categorized as "weak", "strong", and "violent"; with weak tornadoes often having a thin, rope-like appearance, as exhibited by this tornado near Dawn, Texas. About 7 in 10 tornadoes are weak, with rotating wind speeds no greater than about 110 MPH. (looking west from about 1 mile.) The typical strong tornado often has what is popularly considered a more "classic" funnel-shaped cloud associated with the whirling updraft. Rotating wind speeds vary from 110 to 200 MPH.
Photograph by: NSSL Nearly 3 in 10 tornadoes are strong, such as this twister on the plains of North Dakota. Looking northeast (from about 2 miles), note the spiraling inflow cloud, probably a tail cloud, feeding into the tornado. An important safety consideration is that weak and strong tornadoes by definition do not level well-built homes. Thus, a secure home will offer shelter from almost 100 percent of all direct tornado strikes. Only violent tornadoes are capable of leveling a well-anchored, solidly constructed home. Fortunately, less than 2 percent of all tornadoes reach the 200+ MPH violent category. Furthermore, most violent tornadoes only produce home-leveling damage within a very small portion of their overall damage swath. Less than 5 percent of the 5,000 affected homes in Wichita Falls, Texas were leveled by this massive 1979 tornado. (Looking south from 5 miles).

Two killed as tornadoes spread across Midwest
A home in Virginia, Nebraska, was destroyed early Wednesday in storms that moved across the Midwest. The residents were home but no one was injured AGENCY, Iowa Violent weather spread across the Midwest Wednesday spawning several tornadoes, killing two people and injuring several others. A tornado ripped through the city of Agency, about 70 miles southeast of Des Moines, killing one person and injuring three others. Another person was killed about four miles outside of Coalgate, Oklahoma, when a tornado touched down there. Stan Whisman, 41, was killed and his mobile home was destroyed. His 14-year-old son was injured and is in stable condition at a local hospital, Coal County Sheriff Roy Deck said. The tornado, which was about 1/4-mile wide, cut a path about 10 miles long through the county, destroying several more homes, he said.

Table of Contents Introduction to How Tornadoes Work Tornadoes and Your Bathtub Tornadoes and Thunderstorms Tornado Ratings Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Tornadoes and Thunderstorms With a tornado there is no drain. Instead, there is a thunderstorm cloud . A typical thunderstorm cloud can accumulate a huge amount of energy . If the conditions are right, this energy creates a huge updraft into the cloud. But where does the energy come from? Photo courtesy NOAA Clouds are formed when water vapor condenses in the air. This change in physical state releases heat, and heat is a form of energy. A good deal of a thunderstorm's energy is a result of the condensation that forms the cloud. According to Encyclopedia Britannica
For every gram of water condensed, about 600 calories of heat are made available. When the water freezes in the upper parts of the cloud, another 80 calories of heat per gram of water are released. This energy goes to increase the temperature of the updraft and, in part, is converted to kinetic energy of upward and downward air movement. If the quantity of water that is condensed in and subsequently precipitated from a cloud is known, then the total energy of a thunderstorm can be calculated. In an average thunderstorm, the energy released amounts to about 10,000,000 kilowatt-hours, which is equivalent to a 20-kiloton nuclear warhead. A large, severe thunderstorm might be 10 to 100 times more energetic.
