Marine species in the Pacific
Introduction
The Pacific islands region is the largest continuous marine habitat on the planet, the Pacific ocean. It is home to a wide range of large marine animals including mammals like whales, dolphins, porpoise and dugongs and marine turtles. Maintaining healthy populations is essential to maintaining oceanic productivity.
Marine mammals
Despite efforts in certain areas and on certain species e.g. humpback whales, detailed knowledge of marine mammals is at best extremely limited. This is in part due to limited resources and expertise to undertake research in the region, the vastness of the region itself and the diversity of its marine mammals in it.
Whales
Blue Fin Sei Humpback recovery uncertain, currently under investigation through an integrated research programme - total population of Oceania probably of the order of 2000 animals

Berkeley Anthropologists Have Their Say
Anthropologist Elizabeth Colson doesn't often think of the past. If asked, however, she easily recalls the year 1946, when she first traveled to Africa. Taking field supplies from Johannesburg, she and two other researchers journeyed for three days to Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). There she met a fellow anthropologist, J. Desmond Clark. "Desmond somehow knew we were coming, and he met our train," she says. Colson, an American from Minnesota, and Clark, a Londoner, crossed paths that year when she became senior research officer and then director of the Rhodes- Livingstone Institute. He was curator of the David Livingstone Memorial Museum. "With Desmond, of course, prehistory was everything," Colson says, "although as curator of the museum he had to be interested in contemporary things, too." Desmond Clark's death in February 2002 ended this friendship of more than half a century. But the stories survive. Clark, Colson, and three other anthropologists recently documented their experiences through oral histories. Available as manuscripts and on the Web, the interviews complement Bancroft's other holdings in anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. As told in the oral histories, Colson and Clark each spent substantial time in Africa, directing institutions and lighting up the developing field of anthropology with their work. While he pursued prehistory, she explored social-cultural issues among the Plateau and Gwembe Tonga. Both joined the Berkeley faculty in the 1960s.

Ties between Pacific island nations and Japan are growing deeper year by year as Japan's private sector continues to invest in these countries and more development assistance is extended to them. From fiscal 1991 through fiscal 1999 the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund (SPINF) implemented the project Inviting Media Personnel from the Pacific Island Region to Japan. More than 60 media personnel from Pacific island nations visited Japan through that project, which aimed to promote understanding of Japan within the region. This year, as the second phase of its efforts, SPINF launched this new project.
In conjunction with the second Japan-South Pacific Forum Summit Meeting (PALM 2000), which was organized by the Japanese government and held on April 22, SPINF invited eight journalists from the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga to Japan. These journalists later wrote feature articles that were carried in local newspapers and magazines, broadcast on radio, and posted on the Internet. SPINF also sent three newspaper and television reporters from Miyakojima and the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture to Palau in March 2001. These journalists interviewed the nation's new president and gathered material on a wide range of subjects, including environmental problems, the activities of Okinawans living in Palau, the island nation's traditional culture, and the current state of education. Upon returning to Japan, they produced features on Palau.

Today, we live in a world that is often described as transnational, global, transcultural, and time-space compressed. Yet, at the same time, it is a world that is hybrid, fragmented, and decentered. It is also a world that is constantly shifting, and the movement across national and regional boundaries through the two-way traffic of people, commodities, culture, ideas, and information is the norm. Our local Tongan culture is re-organized by this global and transnational world, and we find ourselves, as Tongans, traversing this vast ocean of transnationality and post-coloniality.

Attack of the Polynesian royalist militants
While everyone's attention was focused on Gaza, it seems that the Wallis Island succession struggle has again gone hot. When last we left the matter, the 87-year-old Lavelua, whose disdain for the law had earned him the opposition of the French authorities and reformist chiefs, had been deposed by a coalition of traditional leaders who intended to crown one of their number in his stead. Their plans were interrupted, however, when hundreds of the king's supporters seized the airport and set up roadblocks in the capital: Supporters of the 87-year-old King of Wallis, Tomasi Kulimoetoke, set up roadblocks to prevent the coronation of a rival monarch in a ceremony due to take place tomorrow. The ceremony is being organised by a breakaway group of islanders who want to depose the king and crown a high chief, Sosefo Mautamakia, in his place. Riot squad police from another French colony, New Caledonia, were preparing to descend on the Polynesian island to confront the king's supporters, who blocked roads with cars, lorries and felled coconut trees to prevent the coronation taking place. Schools and government offices were closed as the French colonial authorities braced themselves for violence. "Granted the unrest and the roadblocks, on which I have seen people carrying arms, I cannot afford the risk of putting public servants and school students at risk," the French prefect, Xavier de Furst, told a Pacific news service. He said the airport was littered with tree trunks, breeze blocks and other debris, preventing New Caledonian police from landing to reinforce the 30 gendarmes on Wallis and Futuna.

In addition, the bathymetric grids used to create these maps are available on the World Wide Web as binary Generic Mapping Tools (GMT; Wessel and Smith, 1995; imina.soest.hawaii.edu/gmt ) grid files (see Appendix). Bathymetric studies of the Tonga Trench and forearc have been important tools in interpretations of geological processes along this margin for four decade, beginning with Raitt et al. (1955). The morphology of the trench slopes has been used as: (1) part of the interpretations of basement and sedimentologic processes (Fisher and Engel, 1969; Bloomer and Fisher, 1987; Tappin, 1994; Clift et al., 1998); (2) inferences about the consequences of the subduction of the large, aseismic Louisville Ridge (e.g., Dupont and Herzer, 1985; Lonsdale, 1986; Ballance et al., 1989; Pelletier and Dupont, 1990); and (3) interpretations of the structural consequences of the change in relative plate motion at the northern end of the Tonga Trench (e.g., Hawkins and Natland, 1975; Wright, 1992; Millen and Hamburger, 1998). The maps presented here build on these types of studies, and provide the most complete bathymetric data to date for most of the landward slopes of the trench.
