About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News member of Tuvalu Culture Tuvaluan culture is steeped in the Polynesian tradition, brought to the islands by Tongans and Samoans in the 14th century AD. Although most Tuvaluans these days are Christian, their adherance to traditional life is still an important and visible ingredient in daily life. Perhaps due to a combination of the Polynesian tradition of respect for family, community and environment and the islands' isolation from the modern world, Tuvalu was named the only nation in the world above reproach for human rights violations by a panel of observers in June 1998. Given the missionary tradition in the Pacific over the last two hundred years, it is surprising that the locals have emerged socially unscathed, but - unlike neighbouring American Samoa and Tonga - Western culture has arrived but not dominated the islands of Tuvalu. Religion is a big part of Tuvaluan life and the Sunday service is the most important event in the week. Tuvalu has been described as 'very religious' by visitors, and strict Congregational Protestantism is evident in everything from church services to business dealings. As with other Christianised Pacific islands, this imported religion has been seamlessly interwoven into the complex code of traditional ethics and behaviour.

TONGANS: UNBROKEN TRADITIONS
Tongans in Hawai'i display one of the most intact cultures of old Polynesia. Tongan life dates back to about 1000 B.C., some 1000 to 1500 years before the migration of Polynesians north to Hawai'i. Today, Tongans continue to bring their ways to Hawai'i, reminding everyone of olden days. Key to the preservation of the Tongan culture is the concept of tauhi vaha'a, a Tongan vow to maintain ties between family and community, helping to preserve the culture from outside influences. Tongans hold po-lotu, evening gatherings where as many as 1,500 celebrate and discuss religion, family and community. Often open to the public, po-lutu provide an opportunity to experience Tongan music and to feel the strength of the Tongan brotherhood in Hawai'i. One reason for a strong sense of community is a decision made in Tonga in the 1860s to keep all land under Tongan ownership. This made Tonga's destiny much different from Hawai'i's, where kings and chiefs gave land to foreigners and changed the ancient land management system so that property could be sold to anyone. Tongan culture in Hawai'i can be seen in Tongan homes, which display some of the best examples of Polynesian tapa, a cloth made from the bark of the paper mulberry plant. From this tapa, clothing and wall hangings are crafted and

"CAN WE BECOME TONGAN WITHOUT SPEAKING TONGAN?"
This article is dedicated with much love to our maternal grandparents, Tonga and 'Ana Malohifo'ou, and our parents, Tevita and Lakalaka Ka'ili, for entrusting us with our ancestral priceless treasure; the Tongan Language. (Tongan version of this article was first published on Si'i Le'o E Peau, May 1998 issue) Upon understanding this relationship, we begin to conceptualize the connection between cultural identity and our native language. In understanding and speaking our native tongue we are endowed with a sense of connection, commonality, and bond toward our cultural community. It is through these associations that we begin to completely identify with our native culture. This identification cements a sense of cultural dignity and validation. It also delineate a distinct Tongan cultural group.

Religion
Since the arrival of missionaries in Tonga, the Christian Church has been central to the identity and culture of Tongans. When they first came to New Zealand they held Tongan-language church gatherings in inner-city private homes. As increasing numbers arrived in the 1970s the Free Wesleyan Church in Tonga sent some ministers to lead these get-togethers. It was agreed that Tongans could conduct services in Methodist Church buildings, and observe the regulations and rules of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. As the community grew in the 1980s and 1990s, Tongans built churches themselves, and some left the Methodist Church of New Zealand to run them. The major group was the Free Wesleyan Church, with a big building in Māngere. In the 2000s, the acceptance by the Methodist Church of gay ministers caused hundreds of Tongans to break away and either start their own denomination or join an existing one, such as the Free Wesleyan.
Matters of gender
Tongan culture recognises only very strict gender roles. Girls are brought up to be submissive and to stay at home, whereas boys are reared to be independent and mobile. As adults, men have more political power, but women are ranked higher in the community. The terms fakaleitī (like a lady) and fakatangata (like a man) are the Tongan words for gays. When they are not in sexual relationships, these people are usually ignored, but as sexual beings they tend to be condemned as perverts.
