Times have changed.
Next July, Tonga will be the recipient of the most advanced wireless communications network in the world. This hi-tech facelift comes with many difficulties, controversies and unanswered questions. Alice Daly wants the answers.
Daly is a UCSB graduate student in the anthropology department who is studying the technological revolution in Tonga and its effect on the local culture.

The Department of Archaeology through SFU International is offering an archaeological field school in the Kingdom of Tonga from May 3 to July 19, 2004. Students will take courses in Tongan Culture, History and Archaeology, Archaeological Field Methods, and do a fieldwork practicum on an excavation project in the northern Tongan islands of Vava’u. The field school will be taught by Professor David Burley with the excavation project being a component of his decade long study of first settlement, adaptation, and the development of ancestral Polynesian society in the Kingdom.

The Kingdom of Tonga and Its Lapita Origins
Lapita ceramics from the Kingdom of Tonga
When first described by Captain James Cook in the late 18th century, Tonga was one of the most politically complex chiefdoms in the Pacific. Tongan hegemonic expansion from the 15th century onward has led some anthropologists to broadly refer to this polity as theTongan Maritime Empire. Tonga was never colonized by a European power, and today there remains a highly traditional society in virtually all aspects of culture, from dance and song to social and political structures. It is the last surviving Polynesian monarchy, and chiefly traditions and histories are widely represented on the landscape through different forms of monumental architecture, from elaborate stone-faced tombs to large ditch and mound fortification structures. Beyond archaeological studies, students participating in the field school will have the opportunity to gain a unique and rich cultural experience.

    STATEMENT BY
    HONOURABLE MR. PAULA S BLOOMFIELD

INTERIM MINISTER OF EDUCATION AND INTERIM MINISTER RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUTH, SPORTS AND CULTURE
OF THE KINGDOM OF TONGA THURSDAY 9 MAY 2002
    NEW YORK
Thank you Mr. President, It is for me an honor and privilege to address you all on behalf of the Government, People and Children of the Kingdom of Tonga on the occasion of this major United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children. I wish to also thank the Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan and Mrs. Annan for inviting His Royal Highness Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka Ata, The Prime Minister of Tonga and his good wife, Princess Nanasipau'u to personally attend this crucial gathering. However, due to prior engagements, their Highnesses cannot be with us this week, but their thoughts and well wishes are with us as we deliberate critical issues concerning children all over the world. Tonga's formal recognition for the welfare and rights of children dates back to 1927 when the first Act of Parliament legislated Compulsory Education. Today, Education continues to be compulsory and free for all children between the ages of 5 and 14, or unless a child has completed six years of primary education. Government's allocation to Education has never fallen below 11 % of its total budget during the past five years, and has always been the largest of Government spending, if not second to Health. Given Government's commitment to the development of Education, Universal Access to Education has long been achieved for primary education, and for the first time, secondary education in the year 2001.

For the tenth periodic report of Tonga and the summary records of the meetings at which the Committee considered that report, see documents CERD/C/209/Add.5 and CERD/C/SR.1006. I. GENERAL 1. The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination is recognized by the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga. However, the Convention has yet to be incorporated by the Legislative Assembly as part of the Laws of Tonga. 2. The Constitution of Tonga is the basis of the Government for the Kingdom, and appropriately it has been incorporated as law under the Act of Constitution of Tonga (Cap. 2). Part I deals with the Declaration of Rights and thus the Act expressly guarantees and protects fundamental human rights of the individual. In so doing, the Act thus establishes a legal framework which expressly discourages and prohibits any form of racial discrimination.

Queen Salote Of Tonga: The Story of an Era, 1900-1965 should be read as a biography of a remarkable woman and important political figure of the 20th century, as well as a history of the Tongan islands during the first half of the century. It traces the development of modern Tongan society and offers a description of the culture of the upper class. The text is a result of Wood Ellem's extensive research complete with first person diary entries and numerous intriguing photographs. This book is thorough, well-written and accessible to the general readers and useful as a companion to literature on Tongan History, Tongan Studies, and Pacific Studies and courses on the political and cultural transformations in the Pacific and Pacific modernities.
