Datings of rock carvings (petroglyphs), sculptured stone and Lapita pottery put first settlement of the islands at 4000 years ago as part of the great Melanesian migration across the Pacific from Asia.
While the French influence is strong, the Kanaks have retained much of their culture and tradition, particularly in rural areas and on the outer islands.
Kanak daily life is based on closely-knit, extended family units led by chiefs and councils of elders. The people live communally, with no concept of individual land or home ownership. Sharing is important to community well being. Life ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, are important occasions.
Music and dance are an integral part of the culture. They are used both for ceremony and amusement and include items that have existed for generations as well as those choreographed for special occasions - or created impromptu.

Tonga History and Culture
History The Tongan Islands were probably settled from Fiji about 3,500 years ago. Tonga developed as a highly stratified society with social classes and paramount chiefs. Warfare was common as chiefs competed to expand their respective domains. In 1616 Dutch explorers became the first Europeans to visit Tonga. They were followed by the British explorer. On June 4, 1970, Tonga became completely independent of the United Kingdom. Culture Tonga has a unique cultural experience. Feasting plays a major role in the Tongan lifestyle, with Tongan feasts famous throughout the Pacific for their variety of food and gargantuan size.

TONGAN ADAPTATION AND AGED PEOPLE IN AUSTRALIA
by Siosiua F. Pouvalu Lafitani
(Australian Catholic University, Signadou Campus, Canberra, Australia) In the multicultural and pluralistic structure of Australia, however, the dominant culture of Anglo-Saxon tradition, with its Federal and Westminster legal system, always finds it hard to deal with the complexities and newness of immigrants' cultures particularly if they are from non-European backgrounds. There are a number of interrelated factors, which are conducive to the rise of this problem. Among them are the limited nature of laws, and the differences in cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Further, one aspect of the problem of adaptation is due to cultural and ethnic diversity. In the case of Tongan migrants, their culture with its communal-feudal aspirations is distinct in character from the individualistic-capitalist tendencies of Anglo-Saxon tradition. Consequently, Australian law-makers and political engineers have always found it hard to fully recognise, and even appreciate, Tongan culture in its own terms. But every culture has its own quality and distinctiveness however, which, under humanitarian and democratic principles, should be taken into account of by both local and Federal Governments.

ALA ‘I SIA, ALA ‘I KOLONGA: (Skillful at Sia, Skillful at Kolonga) An Indigenous Tongan Proverb for Contemporary Pacific Islanders [This essay is reprinted by permission of the author. It first appeared in the Moana Publication, Spring 1997 Volume 1 Number 1. This publication is an University of Utah Pacific Islander Student Publication.] A person’s ability to master more than one environment was highly valued among the early Tongans. This esteemed ability is reflected in the well-known Tongan proverb: "Ala ‘I Sia, Ala ‘I Kolonga" or translated as "Skillful at Sia, Skillful at Kolonga." This indigenous Tongan proverb derived its meaning from the pigeon trappers’ practice of "heu lupe" or the snaring of pigeons. The mound on which the pigeons were trapped was called the "sia," and the cooking place for the pigeon trappers was called the "kolonga." Thus, the proverb, "Ala ‘I Sia, Ala ‘I Kolonga," was phrased to honor the trapper who was not only skillful in snaring the pigeons but also skillful at cooking the pigeons. Later, this Tongan proverb became applicable to individuals that have the ability to successfully function in multiple contexts. This proverbial expression embodies the distinction and esteem that early Tongans associated with individuals who could master and function in multiple contexts, or those who have the abilities to work in either the

Richard Woolfgram, publisher of Tongan newspaper - 10/03/2005

Close Tongan-American newspaper publisher Richard Woolfgram recently gave an interview on Radio Australia's Pacific Beat in which he claimed that remittances from US-based Tongans - a major source of revenue for Tonga - are about to dry up. Mr Woolfgram's comments sparked some lively debate from listeners. He speaks further with reporter Bruce Hill about Tongans in the United States, who they are, and how their relationship with Tonga is likely to change in the future. What has been the response to your claims that overseas Tongans are about to stop sending money back to Tonga?
When we had our initial interview I mentioned it I didn't think it was going to blow up to how it has today. I don't mind at all because I think it is an issue that needs to be explored.
Especially with our generation - the younger generation coming up - there's just going to come a day, and I read in [Australian academic] Helen Lee's studies - she pretty much validated a lot of the things that I thought that remittances will come to an end because we just don't have that connection.
And also because we bear a lot of responsibilities here in our overseas communities to ourselves and to our families and it's really a burden that's taken a lot of our time and a lot of our energies, and it's hard for us to carry that burden and at the same time be expected to subsidise - and I use the word subsidise - Tonga's economy by sending remittances back to Tonga.
