  • AREA OF SPECIALIZATION
  • Geography is often called the science of where, and geographers use their expertise to figure out where to build a hospital, a bridge, or a highway. By understanding the complicated relationship between human beings and their environment, geographers find real-world solutions to tough problems, making cities and towns better places to live, helping companies market their products, and protecting and preserving the earth's resources. Career possibilities are boundless. A land use planner works to expand a city's downtown, plan parks and open spaces, or route a new highway. A location specialist works for a mall developer, finding just the right spot to build. A mapping specialist uses the latest in computer and remote-sensing equipment to construct maps for the U.S. Department of Defense. A teacher inspires students to explore their world. What connects all of these professionals? There's a good chance they were geography majors. National recognition for geography education is on the rise, too. A recent national education initiative identified geography as one of five core curriculum subjects that Americans will be required to master throughout their elementary and secondary school careers during the next decade.

    http://www.colorado.edu/geography/giw/sauer-co/1941_fhg/1941_fhg_body.html
    Foreword to Historical Geography
    Carl O. Sauer
Text converted in Fall 1997 by Tiffani Burns, Kristin Lanoue, Craig Primozich, Glendon Joyce, and Trey Rhodes.
APOLOGIA These remarks are directed to the nature of historical geography and to some of its problems. By preference I should present data and conclusions from my own work in Mexico. On second thought, however, I am moved to do what has been done so often in the annual address before this body, to set forth in some manner a confession of the faith that has stood behind one's work. It is obvious that we who call ourselves geographers do not at present understand each other very well. We have more fraternal feeling of belonging together than common intellectual ground, on which we meet freely and easily. We can hardly claim to be getting our chief intellectual stimulus from one another, to be waiting impatiently on the research of colleagues as needed for our own work. We are of various minds as to the fields in which we are engaged. As long as we are in such a condition of uncertainty about our major objectives and problems, attempts must be made from time to time to give orientation to ourselves along a common course. AN AMERICAN RETROSPECT This will not be another design for the whole of geography, but a protest against the neglect of historical geography. In the nearly forty years of existence of this Asociation, there have been but two presidential addresses that have dealt with historical geography, one by Ellen Semple, and one by Almon Parkins.

We have archived this Classroom Calendar entry, essentially freezing it in timefor the time being. We decided not to update the entry since the theme for 2004 leans much more to the social studies side of geography than to the science side. The information presented below is last year's news, but it is still excellent.
November 16-22 is Geography Awareness Week, the culmination of Geography Action!, a conservation and awareness program sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Geography Awareness Week highlights the results of spring and summer activities around the theme for the year. Since 1987, Geography Awareness Week has promoted geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations and has spread the word about the importance of geography education. The theme this year is "Habitats: Home Sweet Home." GIS Day is Wednesday of Geography Awareness Week and focuses on the use of technology through Geographic Information Systems.

Interactive Map of Geography Departments in the United States and Canada
NOTE: The geography folks at Oklahoma State have put a similar map on the web, at http://www.ocgi.okstate.edu/geogdept.htm . I encourage you to check it out. For one thing, it's department data are more up to date than mine. It also will give you additional data layers, such as highways, counties, and urban areas, when you zoom in. However, it is slower to use unless you have broadband, and I had problems several times with the tool buttons not showing up after a zoom or refresh. Oklahoma State's map was made with Internet Map Server technology (ArcIMS). When I started my map, this technology was not available; I made mine by making smart maps, turning them into dumb graphics, making image maps out of the dumb graphics, and then making html pages to put them in. This is one of the reasons I haven't updated the map very oftenit is a cumbersome process. However, after looking at OK State's map, I think there is still a place for mine on the web, so I am working, off and on, on a major update, which I hope to have completed before the end of summer 2005. Many of the links are out of date and others need to be added. I also want to add institutions that offer Associate degrees in geography or geographic technology, and to include Mexico. To those of you who have been faithfully emailing me with corrections and additions, my thanks for your patience and apologies for the long delay.

Belize is a small country lying between Mexico and Guatemala. It's roughly the size of Massachusetts, measuring 180 miles long and 68 miles across at its widest dimensions. Located in the southern reaches of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, Belize is one of 5 countries making up the once great civilization of the Maya. An ambitious project, named Mundo Maya or World of the Maya, is now underway to preserve and make accessible the incredible ruins left behind by these fascinating people. Seven sites in Belize are open to the public, of which four are regularly visited. Two of these in particular, Lamanai and Chan Chich, are especially popular among birders because upscale accommodations and fabulous birding are available near the ruins. Unfortunately, very high prices at these lodges make tours to these sites increasingly expensive. Belize is divided into 8 districts. These are
