Celeb mag's OK! to go in U.S. Brit says he'll scoop up readers By CELIA McGEE
DAILY NEWS FEATURE WRITER It's a story of burning love and chilling heartbreak. Of sexual betrayal and family feuds. Ah, the struggles of the beautiful people who go only by first names - bad publicity, naughty nannies, plastic surgery gone awry. This is the air-kissing, air-brushed, cutthroat world of celebrity-magazine publishing, and now England's OK! magazine wants a piece of the U.S. action. Richard Desmond, the billionaire Brit newspaper publisher - and former porn-mag mogul - introduced 1.3 million copies of his American venture yesterday into a thriving but already crowded field. To do so, Desmond is spending a reported $100 million and renting 110,000 display racks near supermarket checkouts. OK!'s debut features the underexposed Jessica Simpson on the cover, and inside showcases Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton (and a monkey), Nicole Richie, Reese Witherspoon, Rachel McAdams, Nicollette Sheridan, Mischa Barton's "new companion" (a dog) and Denzel Washington. Despite the same-old, same-old celebrity lineup, Christian Toksvig, OK!'s CEO in North America, insists his magazine will distinguish itself from the stalkerazzi set.

Welcome to MOE's BOOMERABILIA! These 50 pages represent my attempt to capture the spirit of the youthful years of baby boomers through mini-essays and histories, images, personal anecdotes, quizzes, timelines, music, brief biographies and humor. The focus is on popular ["pop"] culture from the mid-1950's up to the mid-1970's, with the median and spotlight era being the 1960's. Here at my bohemian emporium, the jokes are all at the expense of our own groovy selves, the hip hoi polloi of baby boomers. Indulge in some delightful memorabilia that will bring tears to your crow's feet, and perhaps a chortle or two while perusing the quirky and nostalgic anecdotes, graphics, photos, spoofs and a veritable potpourri of our glory years. I cordially invite you to join me in a leisurely stroll down Penny Lane and across strawberry fields as joyful recollections come flooding back, co-mingling with those downright bummers to evoke a colorful collage of your wayward youth. If nothing else, here you will be "provoked" - in the kindest sense of the word. Browse around, then, my fellow boomers and curious passersby, keeping in mind that if you break anything, such as my prized Howdy Doody pez dispenser over there on top of the vintage 8-track tape player, then you've bought it, daddy-o:-) "BABY BOOMER" DEFINED North American citizens born in the post-World War II baby boom, usually defined as 1946-62. Having largely invented youth culture as we know it in the '60s, baby boomers are now often characterized by an inability to relinquish our grip on it [heh, heh] - hence our tendency to institutionalize the culture of our youth, as in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The peak of the boomers' power as culture makers came in the '80s, when our middle-aged economic clout made us an attractive audience; films like The Big Chill (1983) and TV series like The Wonder Years (1988) and thirtysomething (1987) profitably echoed the clash of nostalgia with adult concerns.

Vietnamese Culture Camp - A Marvelous Family Experience
By Cindy Roberts Months before we went to camp, Tommy was bragging to all his school friends where he was going this summer, he wasn't talking about the family trip to Hawaii, he was talking about Vietnamese Culture Camp! His school teacher was amazed at the new child that had come alive. Tommy was teaching his friends at school how to speak Vietnamese during recess. It was the first time he had spoken Vietnamese sense he got off the airplane in American! So we finally arrived in Denver, Colorado for Culture camp. I took Tommy age 8, Ben age 7 (Tommy's biological brother from Vietnam), and Tanner age 7 (our second born biological son). We have 6 kids, but because I booked airline tickets so late, we could only afford to take half the kids. Next time the whole family is going! Every moment of this whole weekend was jammed packed with fun! It would be hard to pin point one part that I thought was better than another. Just the company of being in a room full of adoptive parents from Vietnam was amazing in itself! We live in the Southern California area, but we are the only family that I know of with adoptive children from Vietnam. So just the gathering of all these people in itself was very rewarding. Most of the families were from the Denver area, but there were quiet a few of us who flew in for this event. People came from New York, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois for Culture camp. The mix of kids was great! There were a lot of older kids between the ages of 5 and 13.

When to go on vacation?
Some random bits scribbled by Jeremy Zawodny David Beach asks why it's so hard to find the right time to go on vacation: Why is it that there's never a good time to go on vacation? There's always something important going on at work. I don't know how many times I've gone on vacation and had to fly home in the middle of it for an important meeting, then fly back. This time isn't much of an exception. I'm working on some great stuff that is just getting off the ground. It's not easy to leave. Plus I really dig what we're doing. So that makes it tough. I'm leaving things in good hands. But I'm going to check email and be available just in case. I don't have to. But I want to. I feel the same way, though I've never gone as far as flying back for a meeting. I guess he has more important meetings than I do! :-) edit

La Télé des arts to Go on the Air in 2001
The members of the consortium Télé des Arts (Radio-Canada, Télé-Québec, BCE Media, ARTE France and L'équipe Spectra) were delighted today with the decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to grant them a broadcasting license for a specialty television arts channel. The partners are pleased that francophones in Quebec and Canada, along with the cultural and artistic milieu, now have their "own" television service entirely devoted to all forms of art. In the coming months, La Télé des Arts will assume its role as a necessary complement in the current Canadian television landscape. This channel will become a prime place for discourse and dialogue between artists and the public. With this new channel, viewers will encounter audacity, a broad range of artistic expression and a constant concern for quality, new productions and a flexibility that will enable it vibrate to the rhythm of cultural and artistic activities and events from home and abroad. La Télé des Arts programming, high in Canadian content, will offer quality productions from all parts of the country. The arrival of this new channel will therefore generate major new investments in independent production in Quebec and Canada. In addition, the commitment by one of the partners, ARTE France, to invest in coproductions with Canada will also supply a fresh approach which will foster growth in Canada's artistic production. With La Télé des Arts, viewers will have access to the best in European cultural television production. Furthermore, through program exchanges with Europe, our artists and their output are going to benefit from unprecedented international exposure on the European and francophone market.
