CULTURE Like other African peoples, the Togolese have a strong oral tradition. Little has been done, however, to promote vernacular literature. Before independence there were a few Togolese writers using French. Since independence, regional (especially Ewe) literature emerged with the works of several novelists and playwrights. Founded in 1967, the African Ballet of Togo has aimed at popularizing the finest traditional dances.

The legislature is the unicameral , whose 81 members are also directly elected for five years. Economy About two-thirds of the working population is employed in agriculture: a wide range of crops are produced, including cotton, cocoa and coffee (the main cash crops) and basic foodstuffs including cassava, maize, yams and sorghum. Togo's other major principal exports are the ores from the country's phosphate mines, although revenues have been hit recently by slack demand and low world prices. Limestone and marble deposits have also been exploited. Togo's mines contain some of the world's richest calcium deposits. Most of Togo's other industry is based on the processing of these agricultural and mineral products, apart from a handful of factories engaged in the production of textiles and consumer goods for domestic consumption. A successful export processing zone, now entering its second decade of operation, has attracted numerous manufacturers from across the world. The service sector is small and tourism negligible.

It is not uncommon for Americans to have only one close friendship during their lifetime and to consider other friends to be merely social acquaintances. This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans do not like to be dependent on other people. They tend to compartmentalize friendships, having "friends at work," "friends on the basketball team," and "family friends," for example. Introduction
Situated on the west coast of Africa, Togo has land boundaries with Burkina Faso to the north, Benin to the east, Ghana to the west, and the south is bordered with the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean).
Togo is traversed in the centre by a chain of hills, the Atkora Mountains, extending roughly southwest into Ghana, northeastward into Benin and averages about 2,300 ft in height. The highest elevation is Mt. Agou (3,235 ft). To the north and west of these hills the Oti River drains in a southwesterly direction into the Volta River, which constitutes a part of the boundary with Ghana. To the north of the Oti River valley lies gently undulating savannah country. From the southern spur of the central hills a plateau stretches gradually southward to a coastal plain. The 31 mile (54 km) long coastline consists of flat sandy beach thickly planted with coconut trees and partially separately from the mainland by a series of lagoons and lakes which are former estuaries of several rivers.

Pounding fufu Togolese cuisine is renowned throughout the region and Togolese chefs are found working in restaurants and hotels all over West Africa. The most widely eaten food is maize, which is ground into flour and mixed with water to make a porridge called pâtes, (a French word) or akume (the same thing in Ewé). Pâtes agouti Another very famous Togolese food is fufu . The preparation of fufu fufu pounders make is one of the most instantly recognisable sounds in Togo. Like pâtes fufu is eaten with sauces. Groundnut, goat and palm nut are popular flavours. Other crops get a similar treatment. Cassava is milled into flour and shaped into a pâte called a kokonte , and in dryer areas, sorghum and millet are grown and made into porridge or pâtes Mostly Togolese people eat at home, but for those who wish to eat out, roadside stalls sell corn on the cob, peanuts, omelettes, brochettes and cooked prawns, and in the main towns, there are restaurants of all sorts.
