Tobago, West Indies, is a basement high that forms the northeastern most corner of the present-day South American continental shelf. However, its pro-Cenozoic history indicates that it has affinities with the Caribbean plate and therefore is part of an allochthonous terrain that forms the easternmost fragment of the Caribbean Mountain system.
Mesozoic oceanic island-arc crust is extensively exposed on Tobago and can be conveniently divided into three EW-trending lithologic belts that transect the island: the North Coast Schist (NCS), the ultramafic to mafic plutonic suite, and the Tobago Volcanic Group (TVG). A mafic dike swarm widely intruded the plutonic suite and TVG, whereas scattered pre-metamorphic and post-metamorphic dikes occur in the NOS belt. 4OAr/39Ar hornblende plateau ages from the plutonic-volcanic-dike complex indicate that this rock assemblage evolved in the Albian (105-1 03 Ma).
The NCS rocks are lower greenschist fades multiply deformed volcanogenic rocks. 4OAr/39Ar radiometric dating of relict igneous hornblende from these greenschist fades rocks indicates a protolith age of at least Aptian and perhaps as old as Late Jurassic. Synmetamorphic mesoscopic folds In the NCS are tight to isoclinal and display a penetrative foliation subparallel to the axial surface of the folds. The fold hinges of these folds are subparallel to a widespread stretching lineation (Lstr) defined chiefly by elongated mineral aggregates or relict lapilli. Late metamorphic folds are essentially coaxial with the synmetamorphic folds but folds the SI penetrative foliation. Locally a penetrative cleavage (82) is associated with these folds, especially in pelitic protoliths. Post-metamorphic folds include and array of kink-like folds that probably developed under a complex and perhaps variable stress regime of uncertain age and duration.

Chemical Research and Environmental Needs (CREN): A historical note Introduction The overall objective of this program was to improve the Science and Technology capability in member countries to enhance the quality of industrial input in an environmentally friendly manner and thereby improving the standard of living of people. Background An understanding of the chemical changes in the environment is of fundamental importance in seeking answers to the environmental consequences of chemical pollution. A symposium held in Brisbane in 1989 recommended the establishment of a regional (Asia Pacific) project to improve the understanding of the chemical make up of the environment and the relevant research and development with particular emphasis on procedures and techniques for environmental monitoring. Objectives
  • To enhance the awareness of the role of chemistry in development and environmental issues To study the interactive processes in the environment To assist capability development To assist in the development of policy and procedures designed to minimize adverse consequences resulting from chemical industry Promote Commonwealth scientific cooperation on monitoring environmental impacts
Activities A project implementation and planning meeting with Project Advisers and Coordinators under the chairmanship of the Assistant Secretary-General was held in Thailand in December 1992. The meeting discussed progress to date on the seven project components and formulated an action program for implementation.

Jamaican Island History
SPANISH GOVERNMENT BRITISH COMMONWEALTH PROFILE
BEFORE THE SPANIARDS occupied Jamaica in the early sixteenth century, the island was inhabited by the Arawak Indians, who called it Xaymaca, meaning "land of wood and springs." Lying on the trade routes between the Old and New Worlds, Jamaica served variously for centuries as a way station for Spanish galleons, a market for slaves and goods from many countries, and a prize for the Spaniards, the British, buccaneers, and entrepreneurs. By far the largest of the English-speaking islands in size and population, independent Jamaica has played a leading role within the Commonwealth Caribbean and has been active in international organizations. Jamaica's story is one of independence that began in the seventeenth century with the Maroons, runaway slaves who resisted the British colonizers by carrying out hit-and-run attacks from the interior. Their 7,000 descendants in the Cockpit Country have symbolized the fervent, sometimes belligerent, love of freedom that is ingrained in the Jamaican people as a result of both their British tutelage and their history of slavery. Independence came quietly, however, without a revolutionary struggle, apparently reflecting the lasting imprint of the British parliamentary legacy on Jamaican society. Despite its people's respect for the rule of law and the British Westminster system of government

    History and Government
History: Little is known of the early history of Barbados – it was probably occupied by Arawak Indians from South America up until the arrival of the Spanish, in the region in the early-16th century. The earliest European arrivals were the Portuguese - also in the early-16th century - although the British established the first settlements in 1627. Barbados was declared a British colony in 1663. Slaves were brought to the island from Africa, to work on the sugar plantations until the abolition of slavery in the mid-19th century. Barbados joined the West Indies Federation in 1958 and was granted internal self-government three years later. Full independence within the British Commonwealth was achieved in 1966. Politics on the island have since been dominated by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) – formed by Grantley Adams in 1937 – and the rival Democratic Labour Party (DLP), which began life after a split in the BLP. The two parties have alternated between government and opposition since independence. The DLP’s most recent term of office ended in 1994, after eight years in charge. Since then, the BLP has been pre-eminent. At the most recent general election, held in 2003, the BLP won 23 out of the 30 House of Assembly seats.
Government: The British monarch is Head of State and is represented in Barbados by a Governor General who is advised by the Cabinet and appoints the Prime Minister. The legislature comprises the Governor General, a 21-member Senate and the 28-strong House of Assembly, members of which are elected by universal adult suffrage for terms of up to five years.

Encyclopedia: History of Trinidad and Tobago
Updated 228 days 14 hours 24 minutes ago. Other descriptions of History of Trinidad and Tobago Human settlement in Trinidad dates back at least 7000 years. The earliest settlers, termed Archaic or Ortoiroid, are believed to have settled Trinidad from northeastern South America around 5000 BC . Twenty-nine Archaic sites have been identified, mostly in south Trinidad; this includes the 7000-year-old Banwari Trace site which is the oldest human settlement in the eastern Caribbean. Archaic populations were pre-ceramic, and dominated the area until about 200 BC Around 250 BC the first ceramic-using people in the Caribbean, the Saladoid people, entered Trinidad. Earliest evidence of these people come from around

Self-Determination and Decentralisation in the Caribbean: TOBAGO and NEVIS
Professor of Public Policy Department of Behavioral Sciences University of the West Indies, St Augustine TRINIDAD and TOBAGO
This study analyzes the movements for self-determination in two Caribbean countries, Nevis in St. Kitts-Nevis and Tobago in Trinidad and Tobago, from the perspective of the regional factor as a fundamental feature, complemented and strengthened by secondary factors, such as neglect and exploitation. In many decentralist and separatist movements, ethnic uniqueness and identity serve as the main predisposing precipitator of claims for autonomy. In both Nevis and Tobago, however, this factor is not etched in racial distinctiveness. Nevis and Trinidad's population is almost wholly of African-descent. Their assertion for some sort of self-determination is intermixed with claims of cultural uniqueness as well as other causes. These involve regional distinctiveness and historical problems that allegedly bred economic neglect and discrimination. Further, neither Nevis nor Tobago has always been a part of St.Kitts or Trinidad. The British colonizers welded them together for administrative convenience. The forced marriage has not always been a happy one, providing fodder for memory that sustains recurrent claims for selfhood. In recent times, in fact, these grievances have once again resulted in organized assertions in Tobago and Nevis for extensive autonomy, even territorial sovereignty.

Risk for prostate cancer is high among African Americans. We hypothesized that risk for prostate cancer isalso high in other populations of African descent. Our objective was to determine the screening-detected prevalence of prostate cancer in the predominantly Afro-Caribbean population on the island of Tobago. in a population-based screening for prostate cancer using serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal exam (DRE).
