The Association of Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Companies (ATTIC) was first formed during the mid-sixties. ATTIC was registered as a company with limited guarantee in August 1966, in accordance with the Companies Ordinance Chapter 31 No.1. Government's declared policy on the localisation of the financial sector was a major determinant in its formation. However, the slow emergence of local insurance companies caused some degree of initial dormancy in the Association's activities. The mid to late seventies saw a marked increase in localisation activities and a rejuvenation of ATTIC which, by that time, had joined forces with the Life Office Association and the Local Rating Committee. While ATTIC members have looked to the Insurance Act, 1980, as the regulatory guide to doing insurance business, elements of self-regulation have been developing as a Code of Ethics and Statements of Standard Insurance Practice have been implemented. In addition, the executive has approved a framework of Strategic Planning out of which have emerged specific and critical strategic goals and actions. Some of these have been implemented; the others will be during the year 2000 and beyond.

Back to Barbados Index Barbados had expected trade to achieve its goal of export-led economic growth by the mid-1980s. By 1985, however, Barbados had experienced significant declines in all sectors that traditionally accounted for the majority of its foreign exchange earnings. The poor performance was a result of constricting regional demand for Barbadian goods and tighter trade restrictions in the Caricom market. Barbados' foreign exchange earnings were derived from numerous goods and services. Sugar and molasses accounted for nearly 80 percent of agricultural exports in 1985 and contributed 10 percent of total merchandise exports. This sector, however, accounted for only 4 percent of total foreign exchange earnings and has continued to decline in importance since the early 1960s. The manufacturing sector provided Barbados with 85 percent of the total value of merchandise exports and 30 percent of total foreign exchange. In 1985 electronic components represented 60 percent of total manufactured goods; secondary exports included clothing, chemicals, and rum. Tourism was the greatest foreign exchange earner in 1985; receipts totaled 38 percent of exported goods and services.

THE CARIBBEAN EPIDEMIOLOGY CENTRE (CAREC)
Formerly: The Trinidad Regional Virus Laboratory
and The Colonial Microbiological Research Institute The Caribbean Epidemiology Centre began operating on 1 January 1975 under the administrative management of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) at the request of the Caribbean Health Ministers' Conference held in the Bahamas in 1974.
Background
In accord with the multilateral agreement, CAREC was established for a 10-year period beginning on 1 January 1975. The Governments signatory to the agreement also consented to make quota contributions providing approximately 60 per cent of CAREC's core budget, the remaining 40 per cent to come from PAHO/ WHO, and the Overseas Development Ministry of the U.K.
THE TRINIDAD REGIONAL VIRUS LABORATORY
A field station was maintained by the Laboratory in Bush Bush Forest in the Nariva Swamp. At this station, studies were carried out continuously on the arboviruses of Trinidad. At various times, similar studies were conducted in other parts of the island. In 1967, field activities were concentrated at Turure Forest near Sangre Grande. Many viruses were recovered from this area. The laboratory also provided training to research workers and technicians who came from different parts of the world on Rockefeller Foundation or World Health Organization fellowships.
