mov Dynamic MRI sequence of a TMJ of a 25-year old patient with an anterior disc displacement with reduction. The clicking occurred in the late stage of mouth opening. Notice how the disc is pushed past the eminence, where it bends into a U shape. Then the disc-condyle relationship is reduced while the bent disc returns to its normal shape. Case 2

mov Dynamic MRI sequence of a TMJ of a 22-year-old female patient with an anterior disc displacement without reduction. During opening the mobile disc is pushed ventrally by the condyle. Case 3
avi
mov Dynamic MRI sequence of an opening/closing movement of a normal TMJ of a 38-year-old male subject. The harmonious movements between condyle and disc are clearly visible. Notice also some bending of the disc at the end of the opening. Case 4
avi
mov Dynamic MRI sequence of the TMJ of a 50-year-old male patient with a chief complaint of crepitation. The static images of this patient show clearly the irregular bony surfaces of both the condyle and the eminence. An area of low signal cranially and dorsally to the condyle is visible. During condylar movement this structure moves ventrally together with the condyle. Notice also the area of high signal (joint fluid) ventrally and cranially to the condyle. Case 5
avi
mov Dynamic MRI sequence of a TMJ of a 20-year-old male patient with an anterior disc displacement without reduction. During opening the ventral part of the disc hardly moves, while the dorsal part tends to bend by moving ventrally. The sequence suggests that the disc is stuck.

TMJ and Cranial Osteopathy Treatment
By Lina Garcia, DMD, DDS TMJ pain, and or migraine headaches tend to have some or all of the following signs, and symptoms. Observable signs include: 1 - Locking or clicking of one or both lower jaw joints (TMJ), with or without pain.
2 - Limited jaw opening.
3 - Facial asymmetry with one side puffier than the other.
4 - A protruded lower jaw - this compromises the airway so the head is held forward (the forward head posture strains the cervical vertebrae - the thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae must compensate, and now either one shoulder or hip is lower than the other). The primary symptoms include: 1 - An intolerance of light, requiring sunglasses during the day, and difficult driving at night.

    TMJ (Temporo-mandibular Joint) Syndrome is the name for many disorders of the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles and tissues of the face. This joint connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull in front of the ear on both sides of the head. It moves every time chewing, talking, or swallowing occurs. TMJ Syndrome affects millions of people in the U.S. Most of the sufferers are women. The symptoms of TMJ Syndrome are often thought to be other things like migraine headaches, sinus trouble, ear infections, or toothaches. TMJ disorders are caused by many factors including:
    * clenching or grinding teeth,
    * chewing gum regularly or too many chewy foods (bagels, beef, candies, dried fruits) ,
    * muscle spasms of the jaw, face, and skull,
    * improper bite caused by crooked teeth or malformed jaw,

    TMJ Disorder
    Kathy Peck TMJ is usually defined by its symptoms: headaches; pain in the temples, neck, shoulders, and back; diminished hearing; ringing in the ears; and sinus trouble. But the source of the problem can be constant jaw clenching or teeth grinding. Over a period of time, the muscles that control the temporomandibular joints (where the jaw joins the skull) develop nodules or "trigger points" that produce the symptoms when aggravated. Stress causes people to clench their jaw and grind their teeth? But, it may be that it exacerbates an already existing condition called malocclusion of the jaw or, could be the cause of the condition in the first place. The teeth don't fit together properly and, over a period of time, the muscles must compensate for this poor fit, causing the pain and various symptoms of TMJ disorder. Many people go through life with malocclusion of the jaw and never have any symptoms or even, know that their teeth don't align properly. If you suffer from persistent headaches, unexplained neck, and back pain, stuffiness or swelling or pain in your sinus area that doesn't respond to sinus treatments, you could be suffering from TMJ disorder. A simple self-test is to feel your temples and clench your jaw. You'll feel a muscle tense up under your fingers at the temples. Press on that area with the jaw relaxed: if you feel severe pain and tenderness, it indicates that you're tensing your jaw, the muscles are tender, and TMJ could be the cause.
