There are two matching joints one on each side of your head, located just in front of your ears. The abbreviation "TMJ" literally refers to the joint but is often used to refer to any disorders or symptoms of this region. Such problems include popping sounds in the jaw, inability to fully open the mouth, jaw pain, headaches, earaches, toothaches, and various other types of facial pain Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Many TMJ-related symptoms are caused by the effects of physical and emotional stress on the structures around the joint. These structures include the muscles of the jaw, face, and neck; the teeth; the cartilage disc at the joint; and nearby ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves. For example, daily stress can lead you to clench and grind your teeth, both during the day and at night while you sleep. Clenching means you tightly clamp your top and bottom teeth together, especially the back teeth. The stressful force of clenching causes pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other structures around your jaw.

    Overview
TMJ is the commonly used acronym for temporomandibular joint disorder . The pain associated with TMJ is thought to be caused by displacement of the cartilage where the lower jaw connects to the skull causing pressure and stretching of the associated sensory nerves. I developed a very bad case of TMJ several years ago, along with an overall case of fibromyalgia. My jaw was so painful that I had to eat baby food at times.

    TMJ, Pain and Muscle Tension
TMJ is a disorder traditionally treated by dentists because it occurs in the jaw. This assumes that the pain originates in same place where it hurts, which I don't think is always true. In my case I had a low shoulder on the side with the TMJ, and a thoracic outlet syndrome on the sites with the high shoulder. I had tension points in my high, left shoulder and under my low left shoulder. This caused my temporomandibular joint to be pulled out of place from muscular tension in my body. The muscles around my jaw on my right side were being pulled to the left from the overdeveloped muscles in my left shoulder. My jaw was also being pulled downward as well from from tight muscles under my right arm pit.

    http://www.drshankland.com/symptoms.html
SYMPTOMS OF TMJ Because many different symptoms of TMJ exist, discovering a proper diagnosis is difficult. However, there are a few classic symptoms which involve the TM joints, ears, head, face and teeth. TMJ CLICKING
The most common symptom of TMJ is jaw joint clicking (popping, snapping). This clicking sound may be so loud that it can be heard by others while you chew. There may or may not be pain in the joint itself with the sound of a click or pop. But one thing is for sure: if there is a displaced disc, as is usually the case when a click occurs, then the muscles that move the jaw while chewing are more tense than normal. This tenseness can and does cause muscle, facial, head and neck pain.
    TMJ LOCKING
Locking of the TMJ may be noticed simply by catching of the lower jaw as it opens. Sometimes, the person with a locked joint must move the jaw to one side or another in order to open wide. Or, a person might have to open until he hears and feels a loud pop, at which point the jaw actually unlocks.
    CHANGE IN BITE
A dislocated TMJ may also be noticed by a change in the dental occlusion, or bite. If the TMJ disc goes out of place, the bones and disc do not fit together properly and therefore, the bite of the teeth changes.
