Tlingit Myths and Texts
John R. Swanton
Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 39
Contents Start Reading This is a massive study of the myths and legends of the Tlingit, Native Americans of southern Alaska. These texts include a lengthly cycle of stories about Raven, the trickster figure of the Northwest, the equivalent of the better known Coyote of the Southwest. Another major thread that runs through these stories is the typical Northwestern preoccupation with wealth and status. The land was abundant with marine life, wildlife and other resources. The Tlingit, along with other cultures in the region, had developed a very high level of material wealth, as well as levels of social inequality not found elsewhere in North America. For this reason, many of the stories are parallel to European folklore (without being derivative in the slightest way), in which a low-status person achieves wealth and respect by supernatural intervention or a series of epic trials. On the other hand, the Tlingit were also avid believers in the Potlatch system, by which wealth was distributed by the rich at festivals, in order to reinforce their status. Hence there are also stories in this collection in which altruism and sharing wealth are rewarded.

Klondike Days
by Davis Oldham
This year marks the one hundredth anniversary of the start of the Klondike Gold Rush. In July, 1897, a ship returning from Alaska arrived in Seattle with a ton of gold on board, setting off a frenzy as thousands of white men headed into the Yukon looking to get rich quick. The Klondike Goldrush Centennial Committee of Washington State, a nonprofit corporation formed in 1994 with the "encouragement" of Secretary of State Ralph Munro, has been planning various commemorative activitiesmost notably, a re-enactment of the arrival of the gold, set for July 19. Although the area was remote and hard to reach, the gold rush was not the first penetration of the region by whites. Russian, Spanish, British, and U.S. explorers and traders had been making inroads for decades. The Native peoples (Tlingit on the coast, Athabascan inland) were not totally decimated by this incursion, as in so many other contacts between Europeans and Native Americans, but it did undermine the local economies and disrupt the intricate trading relationships among the various tribes.

ALGONQUIAN
If you are looking for information on the "Algonquian Indians", you can stop right now. "Algonquian" is not the name of a Native tribe or nation; it is a language family, like "romance" or "indo-european". There are no "Algonquian Indians"; but there are some Algonquin Indians in Canada. There are dozens of North American Nations that speak Algonquian languages all across the United States and Canada, but the languages and their speakers are as different from each other as French and Spanish and Italian are.

    Who Are the Northwest Indians?
Northwest Indians lived along the Pacific Ocean , from southern Alaska to Washington State. These Indians are well known for their totem poles . After getting tools for carving from white traders, the totem poles became an important part of each tribe. A totem pole in front of an Indian's home would show the generations and social rank of that family. Some Northwest tribes are the Chinook , Tillamook, Coast Salish and the Tlingit.
    Northwest Indians - Shelter
For shelter the Northwest Indians used what was available in their forests red cedar trees . They built Big-Houses, which were from 20 to 60 feet wide and anywhere from 50 to 150 feet long. They didn't have nails to hold Northwest Indian village the logs together so they used wooden pegs. To keep the rain out, they overlapped wooden planks. There were no windows but a hole in the roof let in air.
