Bass said Thursday that the institute's Biblical archaeologist, Shelley Wachsmann, will join the expedition. He added that the shipwreck was located by the U.S. Navy while searching for a lost Israeli submarine and this June's visit will involve inspecting the sea floor with robots and mapping the shipwreck.
"Then, in July, we're going to go to Sinop, in Turkey, to survey the Black Sea," Bass said. "Dr. Ballard's going to be moving into deeper waters of the Black Sea in 2000. That's when I'll be going up to join him."
Ballard's hour-long presentation to almost 1,000 people in Rudder Auditorium Wednesday evening covered his 30-plus-year career in deep-sea exploration, including the discovery in the 1970s of previously unknown life forms living near hydrothermal vents off the Galapagos Islands.
He said the giant clams and tube worms had adapted to life in the extremely hostile environment and may provide clues to the origin of life on earth and could support the theory of life on other planets.
But the public reaction to all of those discoveries, Ballard added, paled in comparison to his locating the sunken Titanic in 1985.

http://www.whitakercenter.org/science/GMO/Titanic/GMOTitanicExhibit.asp
An unforgettable experience Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition The Titanic, the ship of dreams, was conceived in 1907 and met with disaster in 1912; a brief existence fraught with the drama of a Greek tragedy. It was lauded as the greatest ship in history. The story of Titanic has been told and retold, but never more poignantly and passionately than by the artifacts presented in this exhibition. Painstakingly recovered from the debris field surrounding the wreck and artfully conserved, these three-dimensional objects, more than words or images, represent the vessel and the 2,228 souls who journeyed with her into history. These stories were revealed in Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition “The exhibition has been custom designed for our space of 5,000 square feet in Olewine Hall,” Byron Quann, Whitaker Center President and CEO said. "This more intimate version successfully retains the compelling story and respectful presentation of the artifacts.”
RMS Titanic, Inc. was granted rights to the wreck of the RMS Titanic by a United States Federal Court order in 1994, reconfirmed again in 1996. The court award includes the exclusive rights to recover the artifacts from the wreck site. The Company also records the recoveries with documents and photographs of the Titanic in detail, and maintains a comprehensive archive. The Company was formed for the purpose of exploring the wreck of the Titanic and its surrounding ocean areas; obtaining oceanographic material and scientific data; and using the data and retrieved artifacts for historical verification, scientific education and public awareness. There have been seven research and recovery expeditions conducted in 1987, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2004.

Most have been forgotten, but some became famous for a variety of reasons. Some are remembered because of the large number of lives lost, others because of their political importance at the time of sinking. Still others are famous because of their valuable cargos or historical significance. And some are well-known because they are spectacular dive sites. Below are brief histories of some of the world's most famous wrecks. You've probably heard of them, but these mini histories will jog your memory and get you interested in learning more. Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea
/ by Gary Kinder
In 1857, the Central America, a sidewheel steamer ferrying passengers fresh from the gold rush of California, laden with 21 tons of California gold, encounters a severe storm well off the Carolinas and sinks, carrying 400 passengers and her treasure with her. She was gone for 132 yearsuntil 1989, when a vessel sailed into Norfolk, VA, fat with a billion dollars in salvaged gold coins, bullion and artifacts. This is the story of Central America's sinking, Tommy Thompson, the man who raised her treasures from over 8,000 feet down, and how he did it. The story of the steamer's sinking alone is compelling enough to make any reader wonder why the Central America sinking isn't synonymous with "shipwreck" in this Titanic-happy age.
America's Lost Treasure
by Thomas G. Thompson, Tommy Thompson
This is THE best gold salvage book of all time. With 250 color photos and illustrations, "America's Lost Treasure" chronicles the sinking and recovery of the Central America, the Ship of Gold. It is the coffee-table companion to Gary Kinder's " Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea ", and neither book is really complete without the other. The awesome pictures are exactly what the numismatic world has been clamoring for since the discovery of the SS Central America first hit the news in 1988. The lavish use of 19th century pictures, drawings, and accounts of the sailing and sinking of the SS Central America add to the records of the search and salvage of her wreck. But far the most impressive thing in this book are the stunning pictures of the tons of gold coins and bars both scattered on the deep ocean floor and arranged for display after recovery.

His research uncovered ancient Phoenican ships off Israel, a Roman and a Byzantine ship in the Black Sea, and others. He also surveyed the U.S.S Thresher accident of 1963 (an experimental nuclear-powered U.S. Navy submarine sank and broke apart during sea trials after a refit) and the wreck of the U.S.S. Scorpion, another U.S.N. submarine. Ballard discovered the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, which was sank at the Battle of Midway. The Bismarck was a German dreadnought in World War II. Bow of RMS Titanic This was to be a summer of big profits for the new management team at RMS Titanic, Inc., which took control of the company in November, 1999 after a shareholder coup removed George Tulloch, the salvage firm's president, and Allan Carlin, its general counsel, in an effort to accelerate the salvaging of artifacts from the site of the oceanliner, which was sunk by an iceberg on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912. Led by new president Arnie Geller and chief operating officer G. Michael Harris, a former entertainment agent who once promoted dwarf-tossing acts in bars, this summer's expedition to the Titanic site aggressively planned to target high-profile and valuable artifacts in what would be "the most ambitious deep-sea exploration and recovery venture ever mounted." Among the stated targets for the summer of 2000 was a diamond shipment worth $300 million todaya shipment that some historians insist was never on board when the Titanic sank.

Shipwreck Fascination
Fuels Regional Interest
Shipwrecks arouse some of our most noble and basic instincts. In our pursuit of new knowledge and possessions, ships are great enablers, emblematic of the quest for power and fortune that builds empires. Ships represent our ingenuity - the ability to master the environment. But when ships sink, like other technological inventions that fail, our faith in science and in our own infallibility is dashed.
Fortunes are changed by shipwrecks. In wartime, a shipwreck could mark an irrevocable shift in the course of history, the upward or downward turn of whole nations. If French fleets had won control of Lake George during the French and Indian War of 1758, French might have been our mother tongue instead of English. Some market analysts associate the stock market panic of 1857 with one of America's worst civil disasters: the sinking of the S.S. Central America . The steamer, carrying large quantities of gold to New York during the California gold rush, capsized in a hurricane off the coast of South Carolina. Shipwrecks are not just obscure graveyards. "We can find out a lot about society by looking at shipwrecks," said Maine/New Hampshire Sea Grant researcher Warren Riess, an archaeologist at the University of Maine's Darling Marine Center. "Until this century, the ship was the most technically advanced thing that a maritime society would create. We look at ships as a reflection of a society's technical and economic ability. They tell us what was happening."

NOAA took a step to further protect Titanic in April 2001 when, in accordance with the Titanic Maritime Memorial Act, NOAA published "Guidelines for Research, Exploration and Salvage of RMS Titanic." Though the guidelines provided a model of conduct based on international archaeological standards, they were voluntary guidelines, without enforcement authority. The protection of Titanic took a major step forward Friday just after the Return to Titanic mission concluded, when the U.S. ambassador in London signed an international agreement that will lead to enforcement authority and increased protection of the wreck site. When Congress passes enabling legislation, the agreement will come into force for the U.S. It will realize a goal long sought by Ballard and will provide for the signing nations, an international extension of NOAA's 2001 guidelines, but this time with law enforcement power replacing voluntary guidelines.
