Robert Ballard, Discoverer of the Wreck of the Titanic
By Sharon Fabian Ever since the day when the Titanic sank in the icy water of the North Atlantic, people have been interested in finding the wreck of that famous ship. There were lots of stories about the Titanic, and people wanted to know what was really true. Did the Titanic really split in half, as one survivor claimed? What caused the ship, that was built to be unsinkable, to sink?
Many adventurers have tried to be the one to discover the wreck, but for a long time no one was successful. The Titanic was not easy to find for several reasons. First of all, no one could pinpoint exactly where it had sunk. Second, the North Atlantic Ocean is especially deep, over 12,000 feet, and at those depths there is no light. It is also extremely cold in the deep ocean. So, for a long time, the exact location of the wreck of the Titanic remained a mystery.
That all changed once Robert Ballard took on the challenge of finding the Titanic. Mr. Ballard had done his homework. He had learned about all of the problems that explorers before him had encountered. Then he found out about all of the latest technology that could help him get the job done right.

Mary Rose On July 19 1545 King Henry VIII was at Southsea to watch the pride of his fleet sail out to engage French raiders. However, he ended up watching a disaster as the heavily-laden Mary Rose heeled over in a squall of wind and rapidly capsized, water pouring into the lower gun ports. She had more than 90 guns on her decks at the time she sank, and her crew may have consisted of 700 members, of whom fewer than 40 are thought to have survived. Titanic The White Star liner Titanic was launched on 3 May 1911 and sank - after collision with an iceberg - on 15 April 1912, less than a year after her launch. She had been built by Harland and Wolff, and was registered at 46,328 gross tons. The Titanic boasted a gymnasium, swimming pools, a squash court and Turkish baths. Lusitania The first discovery of the wreck site was in 1935. One of the Lusitania's quadruple screws was salvaged in 1982, and can now be seen on the quayside at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in the Albert Dock, Liverpool.

DEEP SEA DISCOVERY
JULY 31, 1997
TRANSCRIPT Using nuclear submarines, archaeologists have located the largest concentration of ancient shipwrecks ever found, representing a new marriage of oceanography and the humanities. Elizabeth Farnsworth speaks with explorer Robert Ballard about the archaeological find. A RealAudio version of this NewsHour segment is available. Outside Links View National Geographic's ancient shipwreck news summary Visit RMS Titanic, Inc's Titanic Online page View NOVA's report on the Britannic , the Titanic's sister ship. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: You are looking at pre-cut Roman columns and giant blocks of granite or marbleartifacts from a shipwreck discovered thousands of feet down in the Mediterranean Sea. They may have been pre-fab Roman buildings on their way to Northern Africa, across a particularly rough stretch of water. The discovery is considered especially important because it occurred in the deepest sea, which until now has been virtually unexplored. The U.S. Navy was part of the project, loaning its nuclear submarine, the NR-1. Robert Ballard, who earlier found the Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck, led the expedition. Making use of the submarine’s advanced radar, as well as an unmanned submersible robot vessel, Ballard’s group scouted an ancient Mediterranean trade route last spring. They found hundreds of artifacts like these Roman ceramic jars. The robotic vessel picked them off of the ocean floor. A basket-like device retrieved them. And they were delivered onto Ballard’s ship.

Showdown at the Shipwreck Corral: Big Brother or Wild West?
by Greg Stemm

Some of the legal, political, and diplomatic conflicts over the control of shipwrecks appear to be heading toward a dramatic resolution in the near future. As Greg Stemm explains, the arenas are many: UNESCO's attempted assertion of Underwater Cultural Heritage management responsibilities, Spain's assertion of Sovereign Immunity over its Colonial shipwrecks, U.S. Navy airplane issues, 19th Century steamships full of gold, and lately, the complicated conflict over the Titanic. The rhetoric is getting louder and the legal fees are mounting. As I see it, the essence of the conflict arises from two polarized schools of thought: the Wild West versus Big Brother. I haven't heard these labels applied before, but they seem to fairly represent the issues. More on this Manichean battle later. But first, how does one track these rapidly shifting issues? For me, given the four hats I wear these days, keeping all the relevant issues on my radar simultaneously is becoming an interesting challenge. As a member of the U.S. delegation to the UNESCO expert meetings for negotiations of the Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage (I wish they could come up with an acronym), I am asked to contribute my opinions to the development of the U.S. government's position.

Deep diving expedition to film Carpathia shipwreck ready to set sail
Powered by CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network RMS Carpathia PLYMOUTH, UK (11 July 2004) A deep diving team led by a Plymouth diver hopes to bring back the first video footage from the wreck of a ship which rescued more than 700 survivors from the Titanic. RMS Carpathia, which picked up 705 survivors as the Titanic went down in 1912, was herself sunk six years later by a German U-boat. Her wreck lies 500ft down in the Atlantic, 300 miles west of Plymouth and 160 miles south-east of Ireland. Now Richard Stevenson and his 13-man team are to film the wreck. Without Carpathia and her skipper, Captain Arthur Rostron, there would have been no survivors from the Titanic, which sunk after hitting an iceberg. Five people were killed in the sinking of the Carpathia in July 1918, which came six years after the Titanic embarked on her maiden voyage. The site of her wreck was discovered by US scuba divers five years ago.

The real allure for many shipwreck divers and historians is the fact that many shipwrecks are mysteries. Many are still missing and awaiting discovery. Some, like the Lizzie D are located and identified, but the story of the sinking is a mystery. Others are unidentified and are awaiting final identification. Divers reading this section will be transported back in time and relive the history of past disasters and sinkings of various wrecks that represent the most popular dived shipwrecks found off the shores of Long Island, New York and New Jersey, but will not be limited to these areas. In time we hope to include many of the predominant shipwrecks found along the Eastern Coastline.

Web posted at: 12:37 p.m. EDT (1237 GMT) DENVER (CNN) It's one of those tourist attractions that seems out of place. In the Rocky Mountain West 2,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean stands a monument to one of the greatest disasters at sea: the sinking of the Titanic. But the historic mansion and museum in downtown Denver have some strong ties to the White Star Line's "unsinkable" luxury ship. At one time, the Molly Brown House Museum was the fashionable home of one of the sunken ship's most famous survivors. Molly Brown represents sort of the American dream," said Leigh Grinstead, the museum's director. "She was a fairly poor working class girl who came and married well. He struck it rich." In the late 1800s, the Browns made their fortune from gold discovered high in the Colorado mountains. In 1894, the family settled in Denver. Molly Brown lived on and off in the Victorian mansion until her death in 1932. The house was restored in the 1970s to look as it did when the Browns lived in it, and today, it is one of Denver's top tourist attractions.

On a frigid, calm night in April of 1912 a ship met an iceberg in the middle of the north Atlantic. A few hours later, two thirds of the human souls, a handful of dogs and a ship's cat were all dead. The story of what happened that fateful night has become the stuff of legend. The ocean liner Titanic , considered virtually unsinkable by the conventional wisdom of the day, sank in under three hours. The event stunned the world in 1912, and remains the most infamous maritime disaster of all time. It is the shipwreck of all shipwrecks. What draws us to the Titanic disaster over and above any other? Many people have their own theories, but the truth is either you 'get' the Titanic bug or you don't. And if you've got it, you know it. If you are fascinated by this event, one of the very best collectibles on the subject is books. Not only are they a heck of a lot more available than most other kinds of

Schuster Courts in Norfolk, Virginia, have made a precedent-setting decision regarding sovereign ownership of shipwrecks and issued an important order concerning the salvaging of Titanic. Sovereignty While it has long been held that individual countries maintain ownership of their own sunken naval vessels, few countries have asserted their sovereignty over an early wreck. In 1996, however, Spain moved to claim the remains of the frigates La Galga, which sank in 1750, and Juno, which sank in 1802, both off the Virginia coast of Assateague Island (see " Spain's Day in Court "). The two wrecks had been claimed by Sea Hunt, Inc., a salvage firm headed by a Mr. Ben Benson. In April 1999 federal judge J. Calvitt Clarke, Jr., of the Eastern District Court in Norfolk ruled that while Spain did have rights to Juno, the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ceded to Britain all North American Spanish possessions, included the wreck of La Galga.

If you doubt that, consider the uproar over the discovery of the Titanic, and the subsequent film of the same name. Tales of shipwrecks are tragic, and we grieve over the loss of life. At the same time, though, shipwrecks are mysterious and somewhat romatic, or even heroic, and always fascinating.
The Titanic The open sea is still the body of water that claims the most ships, and the most lives, beginning with probably the most famous of shipwrecks, the Titanic. The Titanic
The Titanic and the loss of life suffered from this shipwreck were all the result of arrogance. Arrogance on the part of the White Star Line (owner of the Titanic) dispensing with the correct number of life rafts because it would spoil the lines of the ship. Arrogance on the part of the Captain to disregard warnings and take even the most basic of precautions. World War II Tragedies The greatest shipwreck tragedies in history were not the result of icebergs or foul weather or other natural event, but because of war.
