  • Building Your Own Super Computer - Definitions and Benefits of Clustering
( Page 2 of 6 ) Greg Pfister, in his wonderful book In Search of Clusters, defines a cluster as "a type of parallel or distributed system that: consists of a collection of interconnected whole computers, and is used as a single, unified computing resource". Therefore, a cluster is a group of computers bound together into a common resource pool. A given task can be executed on all computers or on any specific computer in the cluster. Lets look into the benefits of clustering:
    • Scientific applications: Enterprises running scientific applications on supercomputers can benefit from migrating to a more cost effective Linux cluster
    • Large ISPs and E-Commerce enterprises with a large database: Internet service providers or e-commerce web sites that require high availability and load balancing and scalability.

Learning the Lessons of the Tsunami – One Month On (PDF)
Oxfam, 25th January 2005. One month after the tsunami struck on 26 December it is still a crisis for millions of people. As well as the tragic toll in life, homes and livelihoods have also been lost. More than a million survivors remain displaced. The following few pages set out Oxfam’s own response, which started on 26 December, in the context of these continuing needs. It covers our work in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives and Somalia. It ends with an update on how the international community has – and has not yet – responded with sufficient aid, debt relief and trade reforms, and how Oxfam has tried to contribute to that debate. http://www.oxfam.org.nz/resources/learning%20the%20lesson%20after%20tsunami%20-%20one%20month%20on.pdf

    Of forgotten stars, neglected kin

    By Ramu Sharma
A COUPLE of months ago an investigative piece of journalism highlighted the plight of 74-year-old Mary Philips, who eked out a humble living by cleaning utensils in Kirkee. It would not have mattered if she was just another poor woman doing such chores. There are millions of them in this country, barely managing an existence. Muralitharan joins elite club

    Of forgotten stars, neglected kin
By Ramu Sharma The report in the newspaper did wonders. Everyone reacted and money and support came from all quarters, including the IHF and the ministry. Thanks to the reporter who put out the story, Mary Philips can now spend the remaining years of her life in some comfort. One is happy for Mary Philips that she is at last cared for. But from the point of view of the Indian Hockey Federation, the state and central government, Mary Philips, is only one such case. Her plight and the resultant relief should be taken as a test case and efforts must be made to cast a wide net to see if there are other such cases in the country needing help and relief. Given the vastness of the country and the number of sportsmen and sportswomen spread all over, it is understandably difficult for the federations and the authorities concerned to uncover such cases. But a method must be worked out and a central authority instituted to ferret out the sportspersons who are living and in difficulties and in case dead, the immediate relatives who need assistance. In many ways Mary Philips was lucky that she was able to attract the attention of a reporter whose crusading efforts brought her plight to the notice of the authorities. But this was more by accident. Journalists can only do investigative work if such cases are brought to their notice.

Titanic facts I found an interesting link to some statistics about the RMS Titanic including some time table of its dreadful first cruise. http://spaces.msn.com/members/ritabublevalerie/Blog/cns!1pPkgeWTHAJif7QmDBKGRnig!508.entry What is interesting is the pictures of the 'apparently' iceberg they struck and the paint that was left on it indicating that a ship hit it recently. Also what I found interesting is that they send out 3 different types of distress signals and not just the then newly 'SOS' code. If you take in mind it was 1912 they actually did faily well covering all the details of the event. The ship was found something like 13 nautical miles from where it supposedly hit the iceberg. That might not be so accurate as they actually didn't know exactly where they were at the time of the collision.

Revised March 2. Comments welcome. INTRODUCTION What you ask, do the Titanic, pizza delivery, community development and the Internet have to do with each other? Good question. I have tried for weeks now to decide what I may have to offer hereas someone from far away with no more expertise on the Internet than the best people already in this room. What I can offer, I hope, is a perspective—one borne of some experience and, I would like to think, much thought. It is the perspective of a sociologist who has worked for over a decade with communities trying to physically and culturally rebuild themselves. And, most recently, it is the perspective of a sociologist trying to use the Internet in rebuilding those communities and building new communities. While I believe deeply in the importance of understanding the world through operating in it, I also believe deeply in the importance of reflection and criticismwhich is one of the things that marks me as a sociologist. That gets me in trouble sometimes. One of my community activist friends describes "an academic" as someone who "likes to come kicking and screaming through an open door." That description fits no academic better than the sociologist.

The scarification the devout undergo seems to be pleasing to the Mockery, and it is said that especially pious worshippers may be rewarded with transformation into a servitor of Vulkoor.

K ashmir is perhaps, to possess an authentic account of its history from the very earliest period. This past account of the valley, its culture and traditions, rise and fall of various Kingdoms, victory and defeats of the people have been noted carefully, yet critically by the sons of its soil. True it is, that the Kashmiriat literature is very rich in information about Kashmir. The modern state of Jammu and Kashmir covered an area of 86024 square miles (prior to 1947) extending from 32deg 78' to 36deg 58' N and from 73deg 27' to 80deg 72' E. The entire state included, beside the Jammu region, Ladakh, Gilgit, Hunza, Nagar, Punial, and Yasin. The tiny state of Chitral, located towards the north-western side of Gilgit, used to pay tribute to Kashmir ruler. It was due to the untiring efforts of Maharaja Gulab Singh Ji ( the founder of Dogra Hindu dynasty in Kashmir) that the State took its present shape and form in the 2nd half of the 19th century. The beauty and the salubrious climate of the valley was known even from the ancient times. The mythological traditions supported fully by the research of geologists confirm that the valley originally was a huge lake called "Satisar", ( the land of goddess Sati, consort of Lord Shiva ) and its waters were blocked near Baramulla (ancient Varahmulla). In the words of Sir Francis Young Husband, "The huge lake must have been twice the length and three times the width of the lake of Geneva, completely encircled by snowy mountains as high, and higher than Mount Blank, while in the immediately following glacial period, mighty glaciers came wending down to the Sindh, Lidder, and other valleys even to the edge of water."

    Re: Schema Evolution
Thanks Guillaume. The structure of our schema is quite relaxed, we use optional fields, we use xsi:type etc etc. So we have all of the mechanisms in place to maximise flexibility. The issue that arises is more when we introduce non backwards compatible change. If all we did was add fields then I think we could cope with documenting a strategy for ignoring. I know the answer is going to be "don't do non backwards compatible change" but our history shows we can't, however much we try. A related subject here is the use of binding technologies. We are looking at using EMF (or JAXB) for the creation of an API. For each release of the model we would have to rebind and redeploy. This just doesn't sound right, even if we were to stick to add only changes!. The trick for that Captain was not to go too fast too north at that time of the year. Even then, it might have worked if the two kids in the clinch on the deck hadn't distracted the lookouts in the crow's nest: hmm, or was that last bit history distorted in the retelling? This ain't Academia vs RealMen or Lawyers vs RealMen, or us vs them or anything else. It is knowing how to spec based on a requirement that makes more sense than the kind I see these days from some working groups. It is picking a technology based on the current conditions of the technical environment: the affordable solution. The ability to do that exists if you can get through the politics and find a customer with money. Survivors of the Titanic got right back on the next ship. One maid/nurse even served on the two sister ships that sank and she lived to a ripe old age. Knowing how to swim is really useful. So were the new standards for lifeboats and passenger capacity. The northwest passage was successfully navigated by the USS Nautilus in the 1950s. A route is found by picking the right technology when it becomes available. The problem stayed the same. The
