Background: What are Zones? MTC maintains a set of regional travel analysis zones for use in MTC planning studies. These travel analysis zones, or TAZs, are typically small area neighborhoods or communities that serve as the smallest geographic basis for travel demand model forecasting systems. From time to time, MTC updates the regional travel analysis zone system to reflect changes in decennial census geography, changes in computing capability, and forecasting needs for particular corridor studies. The original MTC zone system, with zones, was created in 1965 by planners of the MTC predecessor agency, the Bay Area Transportation Study Commission. MTC has since updated the zone system several times over the past decades, increasing to zones in the mid-1970s, to zones in the early 1980s, to zones in 1987, to

CONVERSION FROM ZULU TIME TO LOCAL TIME Up
Time Conversion Next
COMPUTATIONS INVOLVING THE INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE COMPUTING TIME IN GEOGRAPHIC POSITIONS Coordinates is a general term for numbers representing the degrees, minutes, and seconds of a geographic position. The correlation of time and geographic coordinates is a critical skill for members of the intelligence community. Once you have learned to convert time from local to ZULU and from ZULU to local, the conversion using positional coordinates is a simple matter. Let's consider a typical position report. A position report is normally sent as two sets of numbers. The first set of numbers is the latitude (north or south). The second set of numbers is the longitude (east or west) and is the set that we use in time conversion. Normally, the longitude of a position report (the second set of numbers) is sent as a five-digit group. The first three digits of this group indicate the geographical degrees; the last two are the minutes. The group is followed immediately by an "E" (east) or a "W" (west) to indicate the hemisphere. For example, 115°30'W indicates the location is 115 degrees and 30 minutes west of the prime meridian.

    Time zones
A time zone is a geographical region where local clocks are always synchronized. The time of an event can be defined in three ways:
    In a time zone
This is the normal way when the event has a location. The event's time zone matches the geographical region of the location. For example, you arrange a meeting in New York. That event's time zone must be US Eastern Time. Calendar does not currently support this.
    In universal time (UTC)
This is for when an event has a specific time, but no location. It is unusual. For example, a group of world travellers agree to chat together on the Internet on a future date at 1000 UTC. On that day they will all be in different time zones, which they cannot predict. So the event itself has no location, but it does have a specific time. Calendar has a setting to support this.
