By H. David Matthews and Mary Vincent W E ARE A COUNTRY of chronic lawbreakers. From east to west, Canada is neatly divided into six time zones. But many Canadians choose to make their own time and ignore the time zone boundaries. And the rule that clocks spring forward on the first Sunday in April and fall back on the last Sunday in October? In some parts of Canada, the times are never a-changin': we all know that Saskatchewan doesn't use daylight savings, but other pockets of the country don't bother with it either. And while Alberta's time-abiding citizens strictly follow Mountain Time - violators can be slapped with a $25 fine - these maps illustrate Canada's time zone anomalies.
The Northwest Territories has four time zones and no shortage of time zone quirks. The Canadian Forces station at Alert uses Eastern Time while the handful of residents at the Eureka weather station skip daylight savings. Baffin Island, which is crossed by the Central, Eastern and Atlantic Time zones only uses Eastern Time. Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak and Pelly Bay all use Mountain instead of Central Time and Southampton Island is not required to use daylight savings.
Time stands still around the British Columbia communities of Fort St. John and Dawson Creek. Residents are on Mountain Standard Time year round, meaning Mountain Time in the winter and Pacific Time in the summer.

    I. Cartography and Map Projections
  • Cartography is one of the basic tools of geographers - it is the art and science of making, using, and interpreting maps. Maps must be made using the landscape of the Earth as seen on a sphere , and project it to a flat surface. We do so using map projections.
  • Map projections : This introduction to the global geographic coordinate system now leads us to the physical representation of them in a useful manner. Basically, globes are the physical representation of the earth as a sphere. However, they are unwieldy, and humans have always sought ways to represent points on the globe as points on a map.
  • Such maps are developed from projections , named originally because a map was created by positioning a light source in close proximity to the globe. They are means for displaying the curved 3-dimensional surface of the earth onto a flat 2-dimensional surface.

    The Earth is divided into 24 time zones so that everyone in the world can be on roughly similar schedules (like noon being roughly when the sun is highest in the sky). The idea to divide the Earth into time zones was proposed by the Canadian railway planner and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming (1827 - 1915) in the late 1870s. Time zones were first used in 1883 by railroads in order to standardize their schedules. World time zones were determined in 1884, at an international conference in Washington, D.C.     The Earth is divided into 24 time zones so that everyone in the world can be on roughly similar schedules (like noon being when the sun is highest in the sky). Time zones were first used in 1883 by railroads in order to standardize their schedules. The contiguous US is divided into four time zones. Most US states (except Hawaii and most of Indiana and Arizona) go on daylight saving time (DST) from April until October to save energy (in DST, clocks are set forward one hour). Note: the Alaska and Hawaii time zones are not pictured on the map above.

    Universal Time UT ) is a timescale based on the rotation of the Earth . It is a modern continuation of the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), i.e., the mean solar time on the meridian of Greenwich England , which is the conventional 0-meridian for geographic longitude. GMT is sometimes used, incorrectly, as a synonym for UTC. The old GMT has been split, in effect into UTC and UT1.

    Universal Time and standard time
    Prior to the introduction of standard time, every municipality set its clock, if it had one, by the local position of the sun. This served well until the introduction of the train , when it became possible to travel fast enough to require almost constant re-setting of clocks . Standard time, where all clocks in a region use the same time, was invented to solve this problem. Standard time divides the world into a number " time zones ", each one covering, in theory at least, 15 degrees. All clocks within each of these zones would be set to the same time as the others, but so as to differ by one hour from those in the neighbouring zones. The local time at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich, England was chosen as standard at the 1884 International Meridian Conference, leading to the widespread use of Greenwich Mean Time in order to set local clocks. This location was chosen because by 1884 two-thirds of all charts and maps already used it as their

    Updated July 29, 2005 Contrary to popular belief, no federal rule mandates that states or territories observe daylight saving time. Federal law simply stipulates that areas that do switch back to standard time at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday in October. Likewise, the rule requires that regions that observe daylight saving time, or DST, begin the period at the same time on the first Sunday in April. Standard Time While the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., sets what is known as standard time in the country through its maintenance of atomic clocks, the observatory has nothing to do with daylight saving time. Oversight of DST first resided with the Interstate Commerce Commission. In 1966, the U.S. Congress transferred that responsibility to the newly created Department of Transportation. Congress ordered the agency to "foster and promote widespread and uniform adoption and observance of the same standard of time within and throughout each such standard time zone." So why is a transportation authority in charge of time laws? Bill Mosley, a public affairs officer at the U.S. Department of Transportation, explains that it all dates back to the heyday of railroads.
