Working in Virtual Teams
Overcoming Time and Geography?
Following from the section on Virtual Organisations , this section will look at a different form of vitual group: The Virtual Team. The Encyclopedia from CALT at Insead offers a large selection of material that may be of general interest for this and other sections concerned with different types of virtual group. The concept of the virtual team is not clearly defined and it often overlaps with notions of the networked organization, virtual communities, electronic commerce and teleworking. Viewed in this way, virtual teams are seen as a way of overcoming differences in time and geography through creating a virtual co-presence (sometimes called virtual co-location) through the application of technology, i.e. they exploit reliable and consistent communications in order to work together and overcome some of the 'frictions' of time and geography. In contrast to home based work and telework described earlier, but a greater proportion of the work is carried out 'on-line' as hot distributed collaborative work. When teams are physically co-located, the co-presence required for 'hot' working is not a problem. However, when work becomes temporally or geographically distributed is what is meant by 'presence' can be problematical, as can the mediating effects of the technologies used to achieve this. Virtual Teams are seen as project or task focused groups. Team membership may be relatively stable (e.g. in an established sales team) or change on a regular basis (e.g. in project teams). Members may be drawn from the same organization or from several different organizations, (e.g. when projects involve consultants or external assessors). Further distinctions can be made on physical proximity, (i.e. whether or not the team members are co-located) and by work-cycle synchronicity, (i.e. whether or not the team members are in the same time zones).

The province of North Sulawesi with an area of 1,533,698 ha is located at 0º30"- 4º 3" North Latitude and 121º127" East Longitude. To the north the region borders on the Republic of the Philippines, Sulawesi Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The Eastern part is on the Maluku Sea and the Southern side is the Tomini Gulf. The western part borders Gorontalo Province, which until the end of 2000 was a part of North Sulawesi and then became an own province.
The terrain is extremely mountainous and hilly, stretching from the Lembean - Wulur Mahatus mountain chain in Minahasa to Mount Ambang - Mount Gambuta in Bolaang Mongondow. There are some active active and many extinct volcanoes, some towering 1,800 - 2,000 meters. Rich volcanic ash has blessed North Sulawesi with fertile lands; the highlands and lowlands producing rice, coconut, clove, nutmeg, vanilla and vegetables. The plains produce rice and corn in Dumoga, Ayong and Sangkub (Bolaang Mongondow). Plateaus in Tondano (Minahasa) also produce rice and corn, while Modoinding is known for its vegetables. Sangihe Talaud is recognized for its high quality nutmeg and Rumbia Trees (The Sago Palm is the source of a special flour for traditional cookies/snacks).
Sulawesi is surrounded by deep waters, the Sulawesi Sea in North Sulawesi is approx. 6,200 m deep.

http://www.2001everest.com/ev/lesson_plans/lesson_2.htm
Geographic grids are intersecting lines drawn on maps and globes. They are used to help locate and describe specific areas. Two sets of lines encircle the globe: lines of latitude and lines of longitude. The parallel lines of latitude are horizontal, running from east to west. The equator is the imaginary line from which latitude is measured; it is equidistant from the poles, dividing the globe into the northern and southern hemispheres. Unlike lines of latitude, which become progressively shorter as they near the poles, all of the lines of longitude are the same length. Longitudinal lines run from north to south, each individual vertical line intersecting both poles. The prime meridian is an arbitrarily selected line from which all of the others are measured. Any location on the globe can be described in terms its angular distance from the reference points of the equator (0° latitude) and the prime meridian (0° longitude). In order to overcome this problem, standard time zones were established in By agreement, every locality within a standard time zone sets its clocks to
http://academics.smcvt.edu/geography/standard.htm
Standard Time As we know, the earth rotates in an eastward direction, causing the sun, moon, and stars to appear to be moving westward through the sky. Solar noon is defined as that point in time when the sun's rays strike a point on the earth's surface most directly. The noon meridian is that meridian at which solar noon occurs at any given time. Solar time at any location is determined by the noon meridian. Until the nineteenth century, individual localities kept their own solar time. Such a system worked well in pre-industrial societies, but the development of modern industrial society forced people to confront the problems associated with variation in local solar time with even small distances eastward and westward. The noon meridian moves westward at about fifteen degrees of longitude per hour, or one degree every four minutes. Nineteenth-century railroads providing east-west service had difficulty adjusting their schedules to local differences in standard time. For example, travelers on trains from Philadelphia to Washington were obliged to set their watches back about eight minutes because Washington is two degrees of longitude west of Philadelphia. When it was noon in Washington, for example, it was already 12:24 p.m. in Boston but only 11:43 a.m. in Savannah, Georgia.

Western Australia (WA) is ideally positioned to access every significant market in Asia, Australia, the Indian Ocean region and beyond, and offers great benefits to businesses trading in the region. The Indian Ocean region, which includes South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, houses over one-third of the world's population and accounts for one-tenth of world trade. It is rich in natural resources, such as diamonds, tin, iron ore, gas and rare metals. WA is the closest Australian state to this region, and now accounts for 25% of Australia's exports. Its location close to the huge markets of Asia also means the state shares the same or similar time zones with them. So when it's 9am in Perth, it's the same time in Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Beijing and Seoul. That's one major reason its economy has been the fastest growing in Australia in the last ten years. Add this to a business environment with well-developed infrastructure, equipment and materials available to service a range of markets, and a world-class workforce to cater for a range of requirements, no wonder you'd look no further.

Australia is a land of contrasts: sweeping golden beaches, coral reefs rich with marine life, tropical rainforests, mountain ranges, vast grazing lands and sparse deserts. Vast tracts of Australia are registered national parks and protected under government legislation. The Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu, Uluru, the Blue Mountains and the Tasmanian Wilderness are among Australia's 14 World Heritage Areas listed by the United Nations. Also in Australian territorial waters and under Australian control are several islands off the Australian coastline and a substantial area of the Antarctic mainland. Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Australia has many animals and plants which are unique on the planet. This is why Australia has strict quarantine regulations to keep out exotic pests and diseases that could affect native plants and animals, human health, agricultural industries and our environment. Australia is the only country to occupy an entire continent. Australia is as wide as the distance from Kuala Lumpur to Taipei and as long as the distance from Singapore to Manila. The area of Australia is almost as great as that of the United States of America (excluding Alaska), about 50 per cent greater than Europe (excluding the former USSR) and 32 times greater than the United Kingdom.

40. City Of Heroes
City Zone The City is divided into three basic types of zones. residents ofParagon City, villains naturally attempt to attack it time and time again.
http://www.cityofheroes.com/features/geography.html
The Zones of Paragon City
Before the Rikti War, Paragon City was one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the world. The Rikti, however, used the City as their center of operations and devastated it in the process. Paragon City has since resurrected itself from the ashes, but has not yet reached the heights of prosperity it knew before war. Many parts of the city remain uninhabitable and dangerous; Paragon City needs a new generation of heroes to take the place of the many champions who perished fighting the Rikti.
To prepare for any further Rikti attacks, humanity adopted one of the alien invaders' key technologies: War Walls. The Rikti utilized force fields to protect their installations and bases from assault. After the war, human scientists managed to master this technology and make Paragon City the first to use Rikti technology for civil defense. Each zone of the city is surrounded by gigantic walls that house and protect the forcefield generators. As long as the War Walls are intact, they generate a powerful blue wall of energy that prevents anything from getting in or out. These War Walls have been successful in both guarding the city from outside attack and quarantining unsafe zones.
The City is divided into three basic types of zones. The first, and most common, is the City Zone. The authorities have determined that these locations are relatively safe for human habitation. City zones were mostly spared from the harsh depredations of the Rikti and the devastating effects of street to street combat. The current City Zones required relatively little work to get them up and running again. Today, they are the 'real' Paragon City; the living, breathing parts that keep the great metropolis going. Citizens and heroes alike can get from zone to zone either by foot or monorail and the hospitals are always open for any hero who needs treatment. Despite all these signs of normalcy, crime remains a big problem even here. Without protectors, Paragon City remains easy prey to various villainous predators.
