What time is it at the North and South Pole?
Since lines of longitude converge at the North and South Pole, it's almost impossible (and very impractical) to determine which time zone you're in based on the longitude. Therefore, researchers in the Arctic and Antarctic regions of the earth usually use the time zone associated with their research stations. For example, since nearly all flights to Antarctica and the South Pole are from New Zealand, New Zealand time is the most commonly used time zone in Antarctica. Each local time is called a time zone. While geography would allow all placesthat have noon at the same time have the same time zone, politics makes it
http://www.faqs.org/docs/linux_admin/x2738.html
The Linux System Administrator's Guide: Version 0.7 Prev Chapter 13. Keeping Time Next
13.1. Time zones
Time measurement is based on mostly regular natural phenomena, such as alternating light and dark periods caused by the rotation of the planet. The total time taken by two successive periods is constant, but the lengths of the light and dark period vary. One simple constant is noon. Noon is the time of the day when the Sun is at its highest position. Since the Earth is round, noon happens at different times in different places. This leads to the concept of local time . Humans measure time in many units, most of which are tied to natural phenomena like noon. As long as you stay in the same place, it doesn't matter that local times differ. As soon as you need to communicate with distant places, you'll notice the need for a common time. In modern times, most of the places in the world communicate with most other places in the world, so a global standard for measuring time has been defined. This time is called universal time (UT or UTC, formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time or GMT, since it used to be local time in Greenwich, England). When people with different local times need to communicate, they can express times in universal time, so that there is no confusion about when things should happen.

Lesson Plans Science Earth Understanding Time Zones Understanding Time Zones:
Overview:
It used to be that knowing the time zones for your country was enough. With the Internet and e-mail we find ourselves wondering what time it is in Austrailia and other parts of the world.
Teacher Preparation: Look up links to other websites. Cut a large sun out of yellow paper.
Procedure Ideas:
  • For younger students: create a room sized map by assigning each student a state name to write on a sheet of paper then have them go stand in the proper location for that state. They may need to consult a map or globe first. Divide them by timezones with strips of crepe paper or yarn. Then move the paper sun from one end of the room to the other to simulate the movement of the sun across the country. As you move, have them figure out the time for where they are standing.
  • Draw a 1 foot circle divided into 24 sections to make a graphic to place under a globe. Each section represents an hour of the day and rotating the globe shows the time for any given part of the world.
