The Twentieth Anniversary of the Democracy Wall Movement By Merle Goldman Merle Goldman is a Professor of Chinese History at Boston University and a Research Associate at the Fairbank Center at Harvard. Her most recent book is Sowing the Seeds of Democracy in China and she is a coauthor with John K. Fairbank of the enlarged edition of China: A New History Both Western and Chinese commentators, when listing the controversial anniversaries in 1999, ignore the Democracy Wall movement. True, the movement began in late 1978, but it reached its climax and ended in late 1979. While China's leaders refer to June 4th as "an unfortunate incident," none of them refer to the Democracy Wall movement, nor, for that matter, did the participants in the Tiananmen Square demonstrations of spring 1989. Though a number of the Democracy Wall activists, now in exile in the United States, commemorated the event in the summer and fall 1998 issues of China Rights Forum , its anniversary has come and gone without provoking much comment either in China or in the Western media and academic community.

North Asia
North Asia is a large geographical region divided in very few countries. Their histories, cultures and governments are extremely varied, as is their human rights situation. In China, the giant of the region, government opponents and pro-democracy activists are commonly imprisoned and silenced. Catholics and followers of other minority religions are often persecuted. In North Korea, an absolutist dictatorship denies its citizens all civil and political rights. In South Korea, political activists are often imprisoned under the National Security law and subjected to mistreatment and even torture. In Taiwan and Japan, the application of the death penalty continues to be a problem. In Mongolia, arbitrary detention, mistreatment of prisoners and inhumane prison conditions abound. In this page, you can find information and links on human rights in the region. If you know of other resources, please let us know.

Understanding Self-Determination: The Basics
BY KAREN PARKER DEFINITION OF SELF-DETERMINATION The right to self-determination, a fundamental principle of human rights law,(1) is an individual and collective right to "freely determine . . . political status and [to] freely pursue . . . economic, social and cultural development." (2) The principle of self-determination is generally linked to the de-colonization process that took place after the promulgation of the United Nations Charter of 1945. (3) Of course, the obligation to respect the principle of self-determination is a prominent feature of the Charter, appearing, inter alia, in both Preamble to the Charter and in Article 1. The International Court of Justice refers to the right to self-determination as a right held by people rather than a right held by governments alone. (4) The two important United Nations studies on the right to self-determination set out factors of a people that give rise to possession of right to self-determination: a history of independence or self-rule in an identifiable territory, a distinct culture, and a will and capability to regain self-governance.(5) The right to self-determination is indisputably a norm of jus cogens. (6) Jus cogens norms are the highest rules of international law and they must be strictly obeyed at all times. Both the International Court of Justice and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States have ruled on cases in a way that supports the view that the principle of self-determination also has the legal status of erga omnes.(7) The term "erga omnes" means "flowing to all." Accordingly, ergas omnes obligations of a State are owed to the international community as a whole: when a principle achieves the status of erga omnes the rest of the international community is under a mandatory duty to respect it in all circumstances in their relations with each other.

AlternateHistory.com Discussion Board Off-Topic Chat PDA View Full Version : Hypocrisy in History: #1 sunsurf March 15th, 2004, 03:54 PM Without going into long-winded rants about the usual suspects, who we don't need to name, which groups in history have had less hypocrisy, and which have had more? We hear about Victorian hypocrisy, but were the British of that period really any more hypocritical than the people in France, Germany or India of that period? Were the people of Edwardian England really less hypocritical?
From what I've read, it seems like the Aztecs weren't very hypocritical (of course they weren't nice, they just weren't hypocrites. :D ) Does that seem like an accurate assessment?
Okay, people with more power and wealth tend to be more hypocritical or is it just that their hypocrisy is more obvious?
We read about small-town hypocrisy; which small towns would be less hypocritical?
The Soviets were supposed to be atheists, but it could be said that they made a god of their state, so they were lying hypocrites...(as opposed to people who tell the truth about their hypocrisy? I remember one such guy in Chaucer's Tales. Which societies are more likely to openly admit their hypocrisy?)
All this is in regard to constructing imaginary AH societies.

for more info. In "Iraq: Ensuring Justice for human rights abuses", AI calls for the establishment of a UN commission to address justice in Iraq, in consultation with Iraqis. There is also a bulletin titled "Responsibilities of Occupying Powers" and many others, including a 10 point plan for the rebuilding of Iraq. For those of you who are interested in health, as I am (I am a public health and school nurse), go to the World Health Organization's website, www.who.int or the CDC at www.cdc.gov for updates on the cholera outbreak in Basra and other aspects of the health crisis in Iraq. Lastly, don't miss the book discussion this Sunday 5/18, 6:30 pm, at Vromans. The book is titled "The Aquariums of Pyongyang: 10 years in the North Korean Gulag" by Kang Chol Hwan. Usually fiction is easier for me to read, but this was a fascinating glimpse into a very different world and a harrowing tale of one family's experience that I could not put down.
