Early History The Invasion of Tibet Present Situtation
Until 1949, Tibet was an independent Buddhist nation in the Himalayas which had little contact with the rest of the world. It existed as a rich cultural storehouse of the Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings of Buddhism. Religion was a unifying theme among the Tibetans as was their own language, literature, art, and world view developed by living at high altitudes, under harsh conditions, in a balance with their environment. The Dalai Lama, an individual said to be an incarnation of the Buddha of Compassion, had been both the political and spiritual leader of the country. The current Dalai Lama (the 14th) was only 24 years old when this all came to an end in 1959. The Communist Chinese invasion in 1950 led to years of turmoil, that culminated in the complete overthrow of the Tibetan Government and the self-imposed exile of the Dalai Lama and 100,000 Tibetans in 1959. Since that time over a million Tibetans have been killed. With the Chinese policy of resettlement of Chinese to Tibet, Tibetans have become a minority in their own country. Chinese is the official language. Compared to pre-1959 levels, only 1/20 monks are still allowed to practice, under the government's watch. Up to 6,000 monasteries and shrines have been destroyed. Famines have appeared for the first time in recorded history, natural resources are devastated, and wildlife depleted to extinction. Tibetan culture comes close to being eradicated there.

The doctrines of Bon spread from Ol-mo'i-gling of sTag-gzig to India, Zhang-zhung, and China.
From these three they spread to Tibet (from the Treasury of Good Saying: A Tibetan History of Bon) Bon Gives Way To Buddhism
The Dominance Of Bonpo In Tibet Gives Way To Buddhism Eventually these Bon practicioners were forced to accept Buddhist practices. We read: "The Srid-rgyud speaks of five hundred Bon-po monks who were forced to follow the Buddhist vinaya." (from the Treasury of Good Saying: A Tibetan History of Bon, p65) "Up to the king Khri-thog-btsan there was no sound of the Three Precious Ones (Buddhism) in the Land of Snows…..From the reign of the seven Khri up to this king (Khri-thog-btsan) refuge was being taken in the "Four Precious Ones" of Everlasting Bon and escape procured from fears and suffering now and hereafter and ultimate enlightenment attained. ." (from the Treasury of Good Saying: A Tibetan History of Bon, p76-77) 36 predecessors to this king had Bon as the state religion. (700 years?) King Trisong Detsen: Trisong Detsen was the 37th king of Tibet and reigned between 755 and 797 . " There were also many Bon priestesses who attained realization." (from the Treasury of Good Saying: A Tibetan History of Bon, 80)

Resolution To Protect Tibet

Is he even aware of the hundreds of articles written by foreigners who have seen with their own eyes the situation of the Tibetan people under the Chinese Communist rule, most notably by such human rights organizations as Amnesty International?
These are topics that I would like to discuss publicly with Mr. Zhou and anyone else who would like to participate. This is an open invitation to Mr. Zhou and others to continue this discussion in a friendly way with a sincere desire to bring the truth to light.
I would like to convene a public meeting when I return to Santa Barbara in early July. Whoever would like to help arrange and take part in such a meeting, please come forward. Perhaps a Chinese organization might even like to arrange it. Please e-mail if you would like to have such a forum to help solve this historical dispute. Narkyid Ngawangthondup is a historian and the official biographer for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He is speaking tonight at 7 in Buchanan 1930.

TIBET, TIBET
A Personal History of a Lost Land
by PATRICK FRENCH
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2003. 326 pages, $25 reviewed by John M. Lundquist As the title indicates, Tibet, Tibet: A Personal History of a Lost Land Nonetheless, another important contribution of the book is that it debunks many of the myths about Tibet, particularly many that are held in the West. Without in any way belittling or demeaning Tibetans or Tibetan history, French points out that the Tibetans were fiercely militaristic during much of their history, that Tibetan governance, even at the level of the Dalai Lamas, exhibited the unsavory characteristics of governance everywhere, including intrigue and venality. He gives a clear picture of the centuries-long relationship between Tibet and the central government of China, demonstrating how the Chinese can feel that they possess historical sovereignty over Tibet. The opening and closing chapters deal with the author's experiences in the Tibetan exile community in India, his probing and often highly critical analyses of the occasional ineptness and the foibles of the Tibetan exile government, and of the shallowness of much of the Western celebrity adulation of Tibet and Tibetan religion. One of the more poignant sections of the book is a partial transcript of a guest appearance of the Dalai Lama on the Larry King Live show during the summer of 2000. It shows the extent to which this great, charismatic religious figure, viewed as a virtual god by his followers, is often reduced to a semicomical, sometimes ridiculous figure, grouped in with Deepak Chopra, Darva Conger, and Hugh Hefner, in the great maw of the American commercial media.

    112. Introduction To The Five Principal Spiritual Traditions Of Tibet
From the Government of tibet in Exile.
    http://www.tibet.com/Buddhism/budintro.html
Introduction to the Five Principal Spiritual Traditions of Tibet
Tradition has it that Tibet is the land of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and the Tibetan people are his descendants. They trace their ancestry to the copulation of an ape, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, and an ogress, an emanation of the goddess Tara, whose progeny gave birth to the Tibetan people in the Yarlung valley. Buddhism became Tibet's state religion only later. Introduced for the first time in 173 C.E., during the reign of King Lha Thothori Nyantsen, it was gradually assimilated, disseminated and finally integrated into the Tibetan way of life due initially to the efforts of the religious kings. King Song Tsen Gampo took control of the kingdom at the age of thirteen and built Rasa Trulnang Tsuglag Kbang and Ramoche Tsuglag Khang two temples in Lhasa. He sent his minister Thonmi Sambhota to India to learn Sanskrit and writing, and as a result a Tibetan script was then modelled one of those current in India. He invited Acharya Kumara and Brahmin Shankara from India and the Nepalese Acharya Shilmanju, who began the propagation and translation of the Buddha's teachings. Although there was neither conspicuous nor extensive study of Buddhist doctrine, the king himself gave instructions to many fortunate people, mostly concerning the teachings of the Arya Avalokiteshvara. During the reign of King Trisong Deutsen, Buddhism was spread with great zeal after he had invited the Abbot Shantarakshita and Acharya Padmasambhava to Tibet. The task of translating Buddha's teachings was carried out with great vigour and enthusiasm. It is said that altogether one hundred and eight Indian scholars were engaged with Tibetan translators in the work of translating Buddhist literature into Tibetan. They also took part in establishing monasteries.
