Tibetan History Tibet was formed about forty million years ago when the Indian Plate collided with the Asian Plate. The Indian land mass collided and slid underneath the Asian land mass. This caused the uplifting of land that had been on the ocean’s floor. The world’s highest mountains formed during this process, the Himalayas . Also during this process, a large plateau uprooted too. This plateau is more commonly known as Tibet Once this land had formed, traditional accounts have that the only inhabitants were a monkey and an ogress. The monkey was an incarnation of Avalokitesvara. The contemplative and peaceful monkey lived alone. He lived in a cave and practiced meditation. The ogress was a creature of lust and wild emotion. She was stubborn, strong-willed, and had a rather large sexual desire. Although she thought she was alone in Tibet, she wailed out loud for a mate. Hearing these calls, the monkey came to her rescue. Once the monkey got to the ogress, they produced offspring. These offspring were born without tails and stood upright. Many Tibetans today believe they are descendents of these two

History Of Buddhism In Tibet A Glimpse At The History Of Buddhism: Tibet
Between the 7th and 9th centuries, the Tibetan empire was a dominant power in Asia. Tibet had wide authority throughout the Tarim region, which extended into Northern China and Nepal. During the reign of King Songtsen Gampo (born appx. 557 C.E.), a Tibetan script was created which permitted the translation of Buddhist Sanskrit texts into Tibetan. Many great translators over the following centuries performed the amazing feat of translating almost the entire corpus of Indian Buddhist texts into Tibetan. Buddhism Becomes Established In Tibet In the 8th century, under King Trisong Detsen, a wave of great Buddhist teachers traveled to Tibet from India. Incomparable masters such as Padmasambhava, Vairocana, Santaraksita and Vimalamitra spread the dharma throughout Tibet. The great monastic university of Samye was founded during at this time, and Buddhism became well established in Tibet. A few decades later, Buddhist practice in Tibet met with strong indigenous Tibetan opposition, and Buddhist practitioners were no longer supported by the government. However, Buddhist institutions gradually recovered and a second wave of translations and teachers came to India in 11th and 12th centuries.

Conclusion
1. Tibetan history

In its white paper titled, “Regional Ethnic Autonomy in Tibet” the Chinese government claims that Tibet became a part of the territory of China in the 13 th century. This evidently acknowledges the fact that Tibet existed as a separate country before the 13 th century, a fact, which in the past China refused to acknowledge. China’s assertion that Tibet became a part of China since 13 th century is also based on the assumption that China inherited the rights of the Mongol Dynasty that conquered and controlled China and vast territories of Asia, Europe and Tibet in 13 th century. Tibet came under the Mongols in 1207 before the conquest of China by Mongolia in 1280. And Tibet had also regained her independence from the Mongols in 1358 , a decade before China did in 1368. The Mongolian subjugation of Tibet and China are therefore unrelated as Tibet and China came under Mongolian domination at different times and attained their independence at different times. So when China regained its independence from Mongolia after Tibet, how can China claim that Tibet became a part of China? Thus its unsubstantiated claim over Tibet is a sheer mockery of historical facts.

Museum Info
Mission Statement Staffs Photo Gallery ... Credits The Tibet museum was established with the aim of presenting Tibet’s history and visions for its future through texts, photographs, videos and installations. The museum features our main exhibition, "A long look homeward". It is divided into two sections: the first floor presents the Chinese occupation of Tibet and its results, and the second one displays Tibet’s past and hopes for its future. In addition, the museum hosts a memorial for the 1.2 million Tibetans who died as a result of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, a remembrance and hope butter-lamp display.
The small lecture hall is used for showing various historical films on Tibet, lectures and presentations relating to Tibetan history and culture. Catering to the diverse audience of visitors to Dharamsala, all the textual presentations in the museum are given in three languages: Tibetan, English and Hindi. The Tibet Museum is more than a space for exhibitions, installations and lectures. It also provides a platform for educational activities relating to Tibetan history - through in-house activities and special events, travelling museum kits, catalogues, and various other publications.

In 1911, following the Chinese Revolution ending Qing rule, the Tibetans declared complete independence and expelled all Chinese residents. Over the next 40 years, whilst China was embroiled in internal turmoil and the West was busy with its world wars, Tibet enjoyed complete sovereignty, but not internal harmony. The Panchen Lama refused to pay taxes to Lhasa and fled to China, a conservative aristocracy rejected attempts at reform and modernization and the country remained a pious, but impoverished theocracy.

Competing National Stories in Tibet
Janet Frazer
PART I: INTRODUCTION Teenagers in the United States today have usually heard of Tibet and have a vague sympathy for that exotic land, based on recent popular movies and the Free Tibet campaigns in the media. They do not usually have the opportunity to examine the complexities in conflicts around the world, even though an awareness of the various perspectives and of the way in which nations construct national histories would enhance their understanding of conflict in many places (Israel, for example). Nationalism is an essential theme of nineteenth and twentieth century world or regional history courses. This unit is designed for high school students in a World History or East Asia course. Of course more time would be nice, but I envision three to five days to complete these activities.

Introduction: Rare, sacred and dazzling treasures of Tibet, never before seen in the Western World, will begin a national tour at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art on October 12, 2003. The landmark exhibit, which is dubbed Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World , will feature almost 200 priceless objects drawn exclusively from collections from the Dalai Lama's magnificent residence at the Potala Palace, as well as the recently established Tibet Museum in the magical Tibetan capital of Lhasa. Stunning examples of Tibetan sculpture, painting and textiles from the Potala Palace, as well as ritual Buddhist objects and beautifully crafted pieces made for Tibetan nobility, will reveal both the religious underpinnings of this great world culture and the exceptional nature of the arts. Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World has been organized by the Bowers Museum and will embark on a national tour after it closes at the world famous Southern California museum in May 2004.
