4 June 1998 Reshuffle in Tibet government: committee members expelled In a reshuffle of the top leadership in the Tibet Autonomous Region following the seventh TAR People's Congress last month, Gyaltsen Norbu has been replaced by another Tibetan, 54-year old Legchog, as chairman of the TAR regional government. Legchog's appointment further strengthens the authority of Ragdi , who himself has been re-elected chairman of the standing committee of the TAR People's Congress. It is not yet known whether the 66-year-old Gyaltsen Norbu has retired from service or whether he will be transferred to another post. The expulsion in April of two Tibetan members from the regional Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) is being viewed as a continuation of Ragdi’s campaign to "purify the ranks of party members and cadres" and a warning to other officials and party members that even their private opinions will be taken into account. Dorje Dramdul and Phuntsog were expelled from the CPPCC for activities described as "harmful to Tibet's stability and in serious violation of the CPPCC constitution". The close links between Legchog (known as Lieque in Chinese), the new chairman of the TAR regional government, and 60-year old

Tibet's History
641 C.E.
The Tibetan King Songsten Gampo married a Chinese princess thus making an alliance with China.
*China puts a lot of emphasis on this as being a time when close political, economic and cultural ties were made, signifying the beginning of the move towards unity.
**What China doesn't mention is that at the same time Songsten Gampo also married a Nepalese princess, securing an alliance with that country as well. Nepal is an internationally recognized sovereign state, which disprooves that this event can be used to claim that it began to erode the independent nature of Tibet.
When Gampo died that the alliance ended.
China lost a war to Tibet and had to pay tribute.

FROM THE TIBET GOVERNMENT IN EXILE
Peace treaty between Tibet and China inscribed in three stone pillars, one in each nation's capital, and one on the border. "Tibet and China shall abide by the frontiers of which they are now in occupation. All to the east is the country of great China: and all to the west is, without question, the country of great Tibet. Henceforth, on neither side shall there be waging a war nor seizing a territory." *Not mentioned in the Chinese government website
*Although Tibet has had influence from China up until the 1300s Tibet got most of its influence from India.

    15. Introduction To The Five Principal Spiritual Traditions Of Tibet
From the government of tibet in Exile.

Introduction to the Five Principal Spiritual Traditions of Tibet
Tradition has it that Tibet is the land of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and the Tibetan people are his descendants. They trace their ancestry to the copulation of an ape, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, and an ogress, an emanation of the goddess Tara, whose progeny gave birth to the Tibetan people in the Yarlung valley. Buddhism became Tibet's state religion only later. Introduced for the first time in 173 C.E., during the reign of King Lha Thothori Nyantsen, it was gradually assimilated, disseminated and finally integrated into the Tibetan way of life due initially to the efforts of the religious kings. King Song Tsen Gampo took control of the kingdom at the age of thirteen and built Rasa Trulnang Tsuglag Kbang and Ramoche Tsuglag Khang two temples in Lhasa. He sent his minister Thonmi Sambhota to India to learn Sanskrit and writing, and as a result a Tibetan script was then modelled one of those current in India. He invited Acharya Kumara and Brahmin Shankara from India and the Nepalese Acharya Shilmanju, who began the propagation and translation of the Buddha's teachings. Although there was neither conspicuous nor extensive study of Buddhist doctrine, the king himself gave instructions to many fortunate people, mostly concerning the teachings of the Arya Avalokiteshvara. During the reign of King Trisong Deutsen, Buddhism was spread with great zeal after he had invited the Abbot Shantarakshita and Acharya Padmasambhava to Tibet. The task of translating Buddha's teachings was carried out with great vigour and enthusiasm. It is said that altogether one hundred and eight Indian scholars were engaged with Tibetan translators in the work of translating Buddhist literature into Tibetan. They also took part in establishing monasteries.

An Uncertain Ally: The US Government and Tibet By John Kenneth Knaus John Kenneth Knaus is the author of the recently published book, Orphans of the Cold War , which is a history of the US government's role in supporting the Tibetan resistance. He is currently an associate at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard University. Summary: Mr. Knaus provides a concise history of the "tangled, sporadic, fluctuating, yet strangely persistent" relationship between Tibet and the United States. He then argues that since the Nixon era, the Executive Branch of the US government has tended to concur with China’s stance toward Tibet. Congress, on the other hand, has kept the Tibetan issue alive and has pressed the Executive Branch to include Tibet in its negotiations with China. Fifty years ago last October a victorious Mao Zedong proclaimed the inauguration of the Chinese People's Republic to the millions gathered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Within weeks his field commanders in southwest China announced that the "liberation of Tibet" was soon to come. A panic stricken government in Lhasa emerged from its self-imposed isolation to make belated and futile appeals to the outside world for help in staving off the pending invasion.
