Dalai Lama inaugurating the festival in Bombay. Reshma Piramal and Mukesh Ambani next to him Mumbai: A packed house of Mumbai's citizens listened in rapt attention to the Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, as he opened a week-long Festival of Tibet here on Sunday. Organised by the Tibetan Youth Congress and Friends of Tibet, India, the festival would showcase the art, dance, crafts and religion of Tibet. Speaking with characteristic simplicity, the Dalai Lama talked about the relevance of preserving the ancient but endangered Tibetan culture. 'In the last one year, the situation in my own country is very serious, very sad,' he said. 'Whether intentionally, or unintentionally, some kind of cultural genocide is taking place. Therefore, we, the refugee community, have to preserve this rich and ancient culture.' He said he appreciated the support to Tibetans from Indian people in this endeavour. Tibetan culture had synthesised many different cultures, he said and described the choices Tibetans faced as they stood on 'the roof of the world'. Tibetan medicine, too, synthesised many different systems including Ayurveda, Chinese traditional medicine and Unani medicine.

DEDICATION
These pages are dedicated to giving a voice to practitioners and students of Tibetan medicine. There are by now many pages on the web devoted to Tibetan medicine, but few are written from the uniquely informed point of view of those who have dedicated years to its study and practice. In Tibetan medicine it is thought that all suffering (and therefore all illness) results from ignorance. We can then safely assume that education is one way to reduce ignorance and its results. I hope a point of view informed by study and practice can benefit all those who are interested in Tibetan medicine and what it has to teach about health and the causes of illness.
INTRODUCTION With the recent explosion of fascination with Tibet and Tibetan culture, Tibetan medicine is receiving greater attention from the public, scholars and the media. As with many aspects of Tibetan culture, significant and complex issues determine whether or not Tibetan medicine will continue to survive as a living tradition. As Tibetan medicine becomes more accessible in the U.S., it is important to realize that there is a significant difference between Tibetan medicine and the other rich information and knowledge which the Tibetan people have already communicated to the West. Whereas religion, culture, and politics can be freely disseminated here under our First Amendment, the conditions under which medicine can be practiced in this country are limited by our culture, science, economics and law.

    Message from the

    Human Rights in Tibet
    WORLD TIBET DAY
is being held this year on Sunday, July 3rd, linked to the birthday of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. From the moment we created the event in 1997, it has grown enormously in scope and in public support. In its first year, WTD was held in only 10 cities, in 3 countries; Last year we observed it in 57 cities around the world. WE FOUNDED WTD with three main goals: first to create an annual worldwide event to help restore essential freedoms for those living in occupied Tibet; second to increase awareness of the genocidal threats to the Tibetan people; and third, to celebrate the unique beauty and value of Tibetan culture and thought. HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA said in a worldwide message he is greatly encouraged that WTD “has opened many hearts to fundamental rights of the Tibetan people to preserve our culture and to practice our religion freely.” He also expressed his gratitude that WTD had greatly raised “public awareness to the present threat to the very existence of the Tibetan people.” WTD WAS INITIATED in Chicago in 1997 at an informal meeting between Tendzin Choegyal, the Dalai Lama’s younger brother and Richard Rosenkranz, a Pulitzer Prize nominee in history and a former correspondent from the U.S. Senate. Rosenkranz proposed the concept of WTD, saying it could become an annual worldwide event, designed to help the Tibetan people regain essential freedoms. He also suggested this event could be a way to showcase and celebrate the unique value of Tibetan culture and thought. Enthusiastic about the idea, Tendzin Choegyal suggested WTD should be held in July, linked to his brother's birthday - in order to increase potential support among Tibetans. Believing that the proposed event held great promise, they offered the idea to His Holiness – who gave them his blessing and his warm support.

General outline of: The Cultural Monuments of Tibet's Outer Provinces
    Amdo
ISBN 974-7534-59-2 Amdo in the Tibeto-Chinese borderlands is not - as many believe - just the lamaseries of Kumbum, Labrang and some minor monasteries far from the heartland of Tibetan culture. This detailed survey of The Cultural Monuments of Tibet’s Outer Provinces quickly reveals that Tibetan culture is neither extinct in Tibet proper nor in the outer provinces of Amdo and Kham. Their inhabitants’ accomplishments in rebuilding monasteries, restructuring the economy and revitalizing the traditional way of life are among the most fascinating recent events in Asia. This work is an expression of the author’s admiration and respect for what Tibetans have accomplished within the last decades.
Until now, East Tibet has been poorly researched, not to speak of comprehensively documented, and presented. These two volumes are thus all the more valuable in presenting for the first time in English information about this enormous area that was previously unavailable. Areas being part of what is called east Tibet, however, make up a major share of the Tibetan high Plateau, accounting for some two thirds of its huge area. It was thus urgent that a survey of Tibet’s cultural monuments and specific features of historical monuments of the eastern part of the Tibetan Plateau—with special reference to its culture, history, tribal and ethnic variety—were made available.

Whenever I meet a ‘foreigner’, I always have the same feeling: ‘I am meeting another member of the human family.’ This attitude has deepened my affection and respect for all beings. May this natural wish be my small contribution to world peace. I pray for a more friendly, more caring, and more understanding human family on this planet. To all those who dislike suffering, who cherish lasting happiness, this is my heartfelt appeal.
Tenzin Gyatso, the XIV Dalai Lama of Tibet The Dalai Lama’s genial face and straightforward words about the nature of compassion and peace have become more and more familiar to us in the past several years. He has met with Presidents Clinton and Bush, delivered speeches to Congress, appeared on film sets with Richard Gere and on stage with the Beastie Boys, and one of his portraits is used to advertise Macintosh computers. Yet for over six million Tibetans and many other followers in Asia and the West, he is regarded as the world’s foremost Buddhist leader and the manifestation of Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. For these people, he serves as the spiritual head of a tradition whose origins date back to India 2500 years ago. In the isolation of the high Tibetan plateau, Mahayana Buddhism has flourished since the 7th century, producing powerful meditative practices, astonishing art, and a rich monastic legacy.
