Wooden Architecture in Ganzi
A Kham Aid Foundation Report
by Pamela Logan, November, 1998 Anyone traveling through Kham is struck by the region's beautiful houses. Made of traditional materials in diverse styles, Tibetan homes in Kham are handsome, spacious, and well adapted to their environment. What distinguishes them most from the houses of central Tibet is the abundant and skillful use of wood. Kham has always possessed great forests, wood is an excellent building material, therefore carpentry skills in Kham have been developed to a high degree. House, Baiyu County. The Chinese-style tile roofs are not common in Kham, but areincreasing in popularity because they are more rain-proof than traditional flat roofs. A less lavish house is visible to the right rear. Detail of wood construction, Ganzi County Now, however, forests are dwindling, and the government recently banned further commercial tree-cutting throughout Ganzi Prefecture and surrounding areas. What does this mean for the carpenter and his skills? In Lhasa, the government is tearing down many old houses, threatening the city's timeless Tibetan character. What is the status of traditional wooden architecture in Khamis it thriving or struggling to survive?

Kent Hall 522A U nderstanding Modern Tibet aims to raise questions about popular and academic descriptions of contemporary foreign societies. How do these descriptions work? Do they tell us anything about the societies they describe? Are there more effective approaches that we as foreigners could pursue in order to know something of other communities? Our method will involve looking at contemporary Tibet. We will study some of the ways in which texts and images of Tibet are interpreted, and try to form our own interpretations in terms of the historical and cultural context of Tibet and of the wider region. In particular, we will try to look beyond the question of representation of places in foreign writings to questions of modernity and tradition, and to the role of earlier cultural and religious ideas within modern Tibet. The course should be useful for those with general interest in the East-South-Central Asian interface, in China’s nationality policies, in Tibet, or in regional affairs and development, as well as for students with general interest in history, religion or the social sciences. It will be open to both undergraduates and graduates. Classes will consist generally of a lecture followed by a discussion, with some sessions devoted wholly to class discussions and others to films, slides or videos.

A Walk in Dharamshala
Sanctuary for Tibetan Culture
By Daniel Kaplan An ongoing correspondence from GORP contributor Dan Kaplan, as he travels the ancient Silk Routes across southern Asia.
A smiling young monk walks slowly up the cobbled street, fingering wooden prayer beads beneath his maroon robe.
When we pass, I hear him muttering mantras under his breath. A refreshing morning breeze sweeps down from the mountains, making the prayer flags flap crisply around me. I wind my way down Temple Road to the monastery. To my right, an aged, wrinkled nun takes baby steps around a holy gompa. She reaches with arthritic effort to spin a prayer wheel. The red and black Tibetan script blurs as she moves on to the next wheel. The smell of incense wafts into the street, and I overhear rumors that His Holiness the Dalai Lama may make a public appearance tomorrow. As a young man, the Dalai Lama escaped Tibet in 1959, and was welcomed by the Indian government, who established the young leader in this former British hill station, secure from their common enemy. Tens of thousands of refugees have since followed His Holiness into exile, and with international attention drawn to Tibet over the last decade, Dharamshala has become a popular travel destination.

Tibet, a Culture at the Edge of Extinction By Joe Mickey Parents often arrange for Children to leave Tibet to escape harsh Chinese rule. The number of refugees leaving Tibet are on the increase. For the latest news on Tibet please visit "Connect with Tibet" at http://www.tibetanphotoproject.com Tibet, a Culture at the Edge of Extinction Tibet's modern history with China offers insight to the future leadership of China. The Tibetan's experience offers insight into the nature of future leadership in China A Brief History Beginning in 1949 and in a violent and escalated invasion in 1956, the Communist China created by Mao Zedong invaded and subsequently occupied the country of Tibet. For China this was the gain of land mass roughly equal to the size of Europe. With its continued occupation of Tibet, Communist China works to wipe out the culture of Tibet. Communist Chinese have destroyed all but 13 of the 6000 monasteries that made up the higher education and university system of Tibet. In the process, China took centuries old artifacts from the monasteries and placed many of them for sale on the lucrative international art market. Thousands of Tibetans die while performing forced labor.
