Development and Cultural Destruction in Tibet
Paper read by Anders Hoejmark Andersen (The Tibet Support Committee, Denmark) at the "Social Development: A Tibetan Experience" conference in Copenhagen on 9 March 1995. One of the three main themes for the World Summit is Social integration. The report prepared for the Summit by the People's Republic of China takes up this issue with a readiness which shows its inherent dangers. The United Nations is comprised of nation-states, and nation-states naturally favour social and cultural coherence within themselves. To a large extent, the call for social integration will also lead to cultural unification if measures to avoid this are not spelled out clearly. In the case of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, such measures are not taken: the Tibetan people neither have human rights nor self-determination. The so-called unity of nationalities is a key element in China's policies towards Tibetans. After the occupation of Tibet in 1949 - 51, this policy meant the introduction of collectivisation under Chinese rule. These social changes brought about complete disruption of traditional Tibetan ways of life and of their social institutions. Systematic destruction of the more than 6,000 monasteries began, and monks and nuns were killed or forced to give up their vows. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Tibetans were killed in warfare and by starvation, or they were executed because they resisted the policies being forced upon them.

Tibetans consider Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama to be the living embodiment of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, and their spiritual and temporal leader. Throughout more than 40 years of exile, the Dalai Lama has worked to promote international awareness of Tibet and a non-violent means of regaining Tibet's freedom. In 1988, the Dalai Lama put forward the "Strasbourg Proposal" in which he called for genuine autonomy for Tibet rather than complete independence - a major concession. The Government-in-Exile has drafted a constitution for an autonomous and democratic Tibet and holds elections for the Tibetan Parliament.

Tibetan Culture in the 21st Century
by Bhuchung K. Tsering When tracing our cultural heritage, we Tibetans talk about three main sources of influence: for our spiritual tradition we looked towards our neighbor to the south, India; for our culinary tradition towards our neighbor to the east, China; and, for our style of dress we looked towards our neighbor to the northeast, Mongolia. We amalgamated these borrowings with our existing traditions to come out with a distinctly Tibetan culture. His Holiness the Dalai Lama points to the khata, the Tibetan greeting scarf, as a concrete example of this fusion of influences. The khata's origin can be traced to India, but it has been mostly manufactured in China, and it is used only in the Tibetan cultural areas. The arrival of Chinese troops in Tibet, which forced a sizable number of Tibetans to seek refuge outside of their homeland, upset the Tibetan cultural balance. Tibetan culture, which had until then blossomed in familiar terrain, was exposed to pressure on a large scale. Within Tibet, Chinese values have been forced upon Tibetan society for predominantly political reasons. Chinese influence has become a norm in the daily lives of the Tibetans in Tibet, particularly those living in urban areas. Tibetan dress has become sinocized. Tibetan literature, painting, music, and dance have taken on Chinese overtones with a common theme: depicting the supposedly terrible situation in Tibet in the pre-Chinese era and the so-called positive aspect of Chinese rule.

Overview Tibetan Buddhist culture is quite difficult to divide into tidy categories. Practical and spiritual concerns are interwoven in every aspect of life. In this Directrory, we've divided the various topics into several general areas: Tibetan and Shambhala Buddhism are the focus of one set of pages; another group of pages focuses on Tibetan Medicine , but that includes the spiritual basis of Tibetan medicine, and spiritual and psychological aspects of healing, which brings us back to Buddhism. Another group of pages focuses on the international movement devoted to Preserving Tibetan Culture but one of the best ways to help preserve something is to learn about it, so all of these pages are really relevant to that. Another section brings together all our pages focusing on books about any of these topics. These various sections overlap, but one of the virtues of the Web is that it allows pointing to a particular resource from any number of different perspectives. top of page Directory of Pages

Tibetan culture gets a tech boost
A Silicon Valley firm jumps in to network a displaced community By Lisa Napoli
MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR
http://www.msnbc.com/news/737241.asp#BODY NEW YORK, April 11 - At a gala recently at the opulent Russian Tea Room in New York City, serene looking Tibetan monks rubbed elbows with suited clients of a Silicon Valley company that boasts about having survived the tech bust. This is a story about an unlikely marriage between philanthropy and capitalism, and how SCATTERED across Northern India, Nepal and Bhutan are 32 settlement camps, home to more than 122,000 Tibetan exiles displaced from their native land by Chinese troops, who invaded the country 50 years ago. Just last month, action was begun in earnest to install a computer in each of these settlements, and to wire each for Internet access. Part of the bill for this project is being paid by a Web-based customer relations management company, half a world away. The Tibetan Settlement Networking Project is far from complete, for some of the communities are so remote that phone access currently is spotty, if it exists at all. But the recent training of representatives from some of the camps, and the delivery of computers to them, is a major first step. The notion is that to preserve Tibetan culture, Tibetans must be able to communicate with one another. And in this digital age, communication equals computer - even in places where messages are often delivered by yak. "Mail is slow, and the settlements are so far from each other. Most of the time people get telephone lines for two hours a day," explained Richen Dharlo, president of the Tibet Fund, a nonprofit group based in New York which supports projects to help Tibetan exiles. Dharlo himself was 11 when he was forced to flee Tibet with his family after the Chinese invasion; his mother, grandmother, brother and other relatives died of malnutrition while they lived on a mountainside, not sure where to go next. (Eventually the survivors made their way to a settlement camp.)
