Dharma Haven's Tibetan Pages Overview Today Tibet, with its unique cultural heritage which incorporates Buddhist spirituality, is truly facing the threat of extinction. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, some kind of cultural genocide is taking place. Time is running out. His Holiness the Dalai Lama Efforts to preserve Tibet its environment, its people, and their culture come in two forms: direct preservation projects involving Tibetan people and those who support their efforts, and educational projects providing resources for people, mainly non Tibetans, who want to learn more about Tibet or some aspect of its culture. A vivid example of the success of the latter approach is the rapid spread of Tibetan Buddhism and the Way of Shambhala into Western countries, fueled by the avid interest of Western students hungry for genuine spiritual insight. Fortunately, many of the most accomplished Tibetan Buddhist meditation masters were able to escape from Tibet during the invasion, and to bring with them many of their treasured scriptures, art works and ritual implements. Direct help is needed, as well. For example, it is not enough to save examples of religious paintings in museums the skills involved in creating the paintings must be passed on from teacher to student, along with the understanding of the meaning of the images and their function in the meditation practice but Tibetans living in countries where they are allowed to really practice Buddhism simply cannot afford to devote their time and energy to dharma study and art work, unless someone helps to pay their living expenses. In old Tibet, the tradition of supporting monks and nuns and monasteries was strong.

Proper Etiquette Presenting Hada (or Khatag) is traditional practice of respect and hospitality in Tibet, and will be appreciated by your host. If you are presenting a Hada to a statue or a high lama, raise the Hada above your shoulder and bow. When you receive a Hada, it is proper to accept with both your hands. Always add a "La" after one's name to show your respect, for example Tashi La. Address a high lama with "Rinpoche" and a common lama with Geshe La, even though he might not be a Geshe. There are some common rules to remember if you plan to visit a monastery. Always walk clockwise around the religious shrines, stupas, Mani stones and prayer wheels. However, if you visit a Bon monastery, then walk counterclockwise! Although the monks remove their shoes upon entering a chamber, it is acceptable to enter a chamber without removing your shoes. Coming inside during the chanting session is permissible. Sit or stand in the rear, with no loud and irreverent conversation! Also, it is considered proper etiquette to offer some money or butter fuel while visiting a monastery.

KHAWA KARPO-TIBET CULTURE CENTRE (KTC) CHARITABLE TRUST KHAWA KARPO TIBET CULTURE CENTRE (KTC) CHARITABLE TRUST, Dharamsala is a non-profit organization founded in 2003 by a group of Tibetans. The primary aim is to join and intensify the ongoing struggle of Tibetans in exile. KTC is registered under the district magistrate of Kangra, Himachal, government of India, Regd. No. 157, Regd. Year. 2005, Book No. 1. The 10th of March 1959, when thousands of Tibetans rose in uprising against the Chinese occupation and the following events have changed the history and the face of the Tibetan plateau and its people. Due to the unthinkable physical sufferings the Tibetan people have faced, the culture identity in Tibet is going through a phase of extinction. The invasion and occupation of Tibet not only forced tens and thousands of Tibetans, including its benevolent leader the His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, into exile but also hardened the maintenance of Tibetan culture. Under China's Tibet policy, Tibet has been losing a significant part of the Tibetan way of life. Tibetans in exile have, with the help of our friends abroad, been struggling to keep the traditions alive under great difficulties. Under the leadership of His Holiness The XIV Dalai Lama, Tibetans have been working tirelessly from an early stage by creating various institutions for genuine democratic governance that uphold the Tibetan identity while meeting the influences of modern world. The experience of the past four decades, during which Tibetans have had close interaction with the outside world, have shown that Tibetan culture had much to contribute to the global world peace and harmony.

Print This Article TIBET: Tibetan Culture Web Site Closed, Editor-in-Chief Disappears by the Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) The Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) deplores the Chinese authorities closing down of Tibetan culture web site - www.tibetcul.com According to China Information Center on 30 March 2005, "Tibetan Culture, a web site run by the Xueyu Zangren Cultural Exchange Co Ltd in China's northwest Gansu Province, was closed on March 25, by the Internet Administration Department of the Public Security Bureau ("PSB") of Lanzhou." It is speculated that "sensitive topics" and articles posted by surfers have led to the close down. Tsewang Norbu, a Tibetan who is the writer and editor-in-chief of the web site, is reported to be disappeared. Internet is perceived by Beijing as a key instrument in terms of freely receiving, exchanging and disseminating political information and ideas. The Chinese authorities have increasingly placed greater attention on its control and regulation. Beijing has spent millions of dollars in a nationwide surveillance system and was successful in blocking web sites it consider anti-government. Reporters Without Borders, an international press freedom group, in the end of 2003 criticized the Chinese authorities plans to set up a countrywide monitoring system through a system of strictly controlled Internet cafe chains. The authorities planted monitoring and control software in Internet cafe to keep track of information. In April 2004, the authorities in Lhasa, Tibet, made it mandatory for surfers to acquire an Internet Browsing Registration Card issued by the Internet Security Branch of Lhasa PSB. The surfers are required to fill a form providing passport or citizen identification information (Ch: shen fen zheng) before they browse the worldwide web.
