Thyroid Cancer
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck, below the Adam's apple. The thyroid makes and stores hormones that help regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and the rate at which food is converted into energy. Thyroid hormones also help children grow and develop. The thyroid uses iodine, a mineral found in some foods and in iodized salt, to make several of its hormones. Each year, more than 12,000 Americans find out they have thyroid cancer. This disease accounts for about 1 percent of all cancers. Thyroid cancer usually responds well to treatment, and many patients can be cured. What are the types of thyroid cancer?
There are four major types of thyroid cancer: papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. Doctors can tell the type of cancer by the way the cells look under a microscope and by the way the tumor grows.

Product information for Glaxo Wellcome's brand of levothyroxine sodium, a synthetic hormone used in thyroid replacement therapy.
http://www.rxmed.com/b.main/b2.pharmaceutical/b2.1.monographs/CPS- Monographs/CP
ELTROXIN® Glaxo Wellcome Levothyroxine Sodium Hypothyroidism Therapy Action And Clinical Pharmacology: Levothyroxine sodium is the monosodium salt of the levorotatory isomer of thyroxine (tetraiodothyronine), the principal hormone secreted by the normal thyroid gland.
Pharmacokinetics: Following oral administration, the absorption of levothyroxine is incomplete and variable (50 to 75%), especially when taken with food. Once absorbed, synthetic levothyroxine is indistinguishable from the endogenous hormone.
Levothyroxine is nearly totally bound to serum proteins and has an elimination half-life of 6 to 7 days in the euthyroid subject. Half-life is shortened in hyperthyroidism and prolonged in hypothyroidism and in pregnancy. Deiodination of levothyroxine (T4) to 1-triiodothyronine (T3) occurs in various tissues, particularly liver and kidney. T3 is approximately 4 times as potent as T4 on a weight basis.
The mechanism of action of thyroid hormones is not completely understood. The principle effect is to increase the metabolic rate of body tissues. Thyroid hormones have both catabolic and anabolic effects, and are therefore involved in normal metabolism, growth, and development, especially the development of the CNS in infancy.
Indications And Clinical Uses: Specific hormonal replacement therapy in the presence of hypothyroidism of any etiology.

The thyroid gland and its relations In anatomy , the thyroid is the largest endocrine gland in the body. It is situated on the front side of the neck at the level of C5 and T1 vertebral bodies, just below the laryngeal prominance ( Adam's apple ), near the thyroid cartilage over the trachea but covered by layers of skin and muscle. The thyroid is quite large for an endocrine gland - 15-40 grams in adults- and butterfly-shaped: the wings correspond to the lobes and the body to the isthmus of the thyroid. Normally it is larger during menstruation and in pregnant women. here are four parathyroid glands located in the neck, surrounding the thyroid gland. These glands produce parathyroid hormone (PTH) in order to keep the blood calcium level within the normal range. When blood calcium becomes too low, parathyroid hormone compensates by releasing calcium from the bones, by conserving calcium that would ordinarily be excreted by the kidneys, and by increasing absorption of calcium from food. Hyperparathyroidism occurs when one or more of the parathyroid glands becomes enlarged and overactive, producing too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). When this happens, the excess parathyroid hormone causes a high level of calcium to be released in the blood. Since the bones are the primary source of this calcium, hyperparathyroidism can result in excess bone loss or osteoporosis. If the condition is successfully treated, the bone loss can usually be reversed and bone density can be restored. Most cases (85%) of hyperparathyroidism are the result of a single parathyroid gland malfunctioning and developing into a benign tumor, known as an adenoma. In nearly all other cases (15%), two or more glands enlarge, again in a benign fashion, a condition called hyperplasia. Parathyroid cancer is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism.

Thyroid Problems Overview
The thyroid gland is located on the front part of the neck below the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple). The gland produces thyroid hormones, which regulate body metabolism. Thyroid hormones are important in regulating body energy, the body's use of other hormones and vitamins, and the growth and maturation of body tissues. Diseases of the thyroid gland can result in either production of too much (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism) hormone.
  • Production of thyroid hormones: The process of hormone synthesis begins in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus releases thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). The TRH travels through the bloodstream to the pituitary gland, also in the brain. In response, the pituitary gland then releases thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) into the blood. The TSH then stimulates the thyroid to produce the two main thyroid hormones, L-thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid gland also needs adequate amounts of dietary iodine to be able to produce T4 and T3. Regulation of thyroid hormone production: To prevent the overproduction or underproduction of thyroid hormones, the pituitary gland can sense how much hormone is in the blood and adjust the production of hormones accordingly. For example, when there is too much thyroid hormone in the blood, the TRH does not work effectively to stimulate the pituitary gland. In addition, too much thyroid hormone will prevent the release of TSH from the pituitary gland. The sum effect of this is to decrease the amount of TSH released from the pituitary gland, resulting in less production of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. This then works to restore the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood to normal. Defects in these regulatory pathways may result in hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Low thyroid levels during pregnancy may lower child's IQ
Read what doctors have to say about ongoing thyroid replacement therapy or ask your own questions. August 18, 1999 Web posted at: 5:18 p.m. EDT (2118 GMT) (CNN) The IQs of children born to mothers with untreated underactive thyroid glands are lower than those of children born to healthy mothers by up to seven points, according to a study in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. "Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) in pregnant women can adversely affect their child's subsequent performance on neuropsychological tests," wrote researchers from the Foundation for Blood Research in Scarborough, Maine. Scientists found the child's IQ is affected "even when the pregnant woman's hypothyroidism is mild." Women with mild hypothyroidism may display none of the usual symptoms of the condition, which include fatigue, weight gain and dry hair and skin.

Canine thyroid disease can be tough to diagnose
The symptoms can be legion and sometimes contradictory
Introduction
Canine thyroid disease can be tough to diagnose. The symptoms can be legion and sometimes contradictory: lethargy, mental lassitude, weight gain, dull coat, skin infections, constipation, diarrhea, cold intolerance, skin odor, hair loss, greasy skin, dry skin, reproductive problems, aggression, and more. The associated diseases or conditions can be serious: megaesophagus, ruptured knee ligaments, testicular atrophy, cardiomyopathy, excessive bleeding, and corneal ulcers. The disease can be inherited or of unknown or uncertain origin. The diagnosis can be complex; the treatment as simple as supplementing a basic essential hormone. This is the description of canine hypothyroidism, the absence of sufficient thyroid hormone to maintain healthy body functions.
Thyroid gland
The mammalian body has 10 systems — skeletal, muscle, digestive, circulatory, excretory, integumentary (skin), respiratory, nervous, endocrine (ductless glands), and reproductive — that must be working properly for the animal to stay in good health.

  • New cases: 25,690. Deaths: 1,490.
Carcinoma of the thyroid gland is an uncommon cancer but is the most common malignancy of the endocrine system. [ ] Differentiated tumors (papillary or follicular) are highly treatable and usually curable. Poorly differentiated tumors (medullary or anaplastic) are much less common, are aggressive, metastasize early, and have a much poorer prognosis. Thyroid cancer affects women more often than men, and usually occurs in people between the ages of 25 and 65 years. The incidence of this malignancy has been increasing over the last decade. Thyroid cancer commonly presents as a cold nodule. The overall incidence of cancer in a cold nodule is 12% to 15%, but it is higher in people younger than 40 years and in people with calcifications present on preoperative ultrasonography. [ Risk factors Patients with a history of radiation administered in infancy and childhood for benign conditions of the head and neck, such as enlarged thymus, acne, or tonsillar or adenoidal enlargement, have an increased risk of cancer as well as other abnormalities of the thyroid gland. In this group of patients, malignancies of the thyroid gland first appear beginning as early as 5 years following radiation and may appear 20 or more years later. [
