Estimated Exposures and Thyroid Doses Received by the American People from Iodine-131 in Fallout Following Nevada Atmospheric Nuclear Bomb Tests is a report from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The report contains results from a study to assess Americans' exposures to radioactive iodine-131 fallout from atmospheric nuclear bomb tests carried out at the Nevada Test Site in the 1950s and 1960s. This report was mandated by Congress under Public Law 97-414. Results of the study show that, depending on their age at the time of the tests, where they lived, and what foods they consumed, particularly milk, Americans were exposed to varying levels of I-131 for about two months following each of the 90 tests. The report, published in full on this website, provides the technical details of this study.

THYROID DISORDERS
Your thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located just below your Adam's apple. The thyroid produces hormones that affect your body's metabolism and energy level. Thyroid problems are among the most common medical conditions but, because their symptoms often appear gradually, they are commonly misdiagnosed. The three most common thyroid problems are the underactive thyroid , the overactive thyroid and thyroid nodules
HYPOTHYROIDISM (Underactive thyroid)
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In this condition, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.
Common symptoms of hypothyroidism are:
  • Fatigue or lack of energy Weight gain Feeling cold Dry skin and hair Heavy menstrual periods Constipation Slowed thinking
D IAGNOSIS of hypothyroidism is usually straightforward, once it is suspected. Patients with hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis have an elevated level of serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). However, the rare patient with hypothyroidism due to a pituitary or hypothalamic condition may have a normal or low serum TSH. T REATMENT of hypothyroidism consists of taking thyroid hormone in pill form on a daily basis. Symptoms of hypothyroidism should clear up within a few months of starting treatment. Adjustment of the dose of thyroid pills is based upon measurements of serum TSH. Most patients need to take thyroid hormone for life.

KI4U, Inc. is much more than just a licensed Radiological Laboratory... We've been offering KI and KIO3 since 1999, long before most saw any need for it. We sell to the Federal Government, military, and many state and municipal governments, as well as to doctors, hospitals and pharmacies. Also, tens of thousands of individuals and families have bought KI or KIO3 direct from us via the internet. We've invested heavily to secure the largest private emergency inventory of KI in the USA with over 15 million doses, currently, but still know this won't be anywhere near enough in a future major nuclear emergency. Currently the total Federal Government stockpile consists of 1 million doses held by the CDC and another 600,000 doses, half of which we sold them, held by the Office of Emergency Preparedness. That's only enough for 1.6 million people, for ONE day, and then it's all gone! Nor, is enough of it likely to be exactly where it's needed when the time comes, either, until the day every family already has their own supply. Our popular informational FAQ site details it all at

Through this site we plan to keep you informed of the activities of our growing organization and the development of existing and future thyroid member organizations in the world. The Thyroid Federation International first convened in Toronto at the 11th International Thyroid Congress in September 1995. The vision of a world thyroid organization to deal with the problems of thyroid disease in a global perspective was first advocated by Diana Meltzer Abramsky, C.M., B.A. who in 1980 founded the Thyroid Foundation of Canada in Kingston, Ontario Canada - the first lay thyroid organization in the world. Since then, the idea has received enthusiastic support and leadership from Dr. Lawrence C. Wood of the Thyroid Foundation of America, the Federation's first president. Starting from a base of six member organizations, the Federation has grown to include thyroid organizations in many parts of the world, including Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. Our main objective is to assist all those interested to start a thyroid patient organization in their country or locale. For more information see:

The thyroid gland is found in the neck just below the "Adam's apple." This gland is responsible for producing thyroid hormone, which is an important hormone that stimulates the metabolism of the body. Like many things, the thyroid gland gets "lumpier" as we get older and the frequency of these nodules increases with age. Thyroid nodules are also more common in women than in men.
