SURVIVING THYROID CANCER
By Ruth Fawcett
Home Page Before Diagnosis Operation Post Operation ... Tell A Friend When I was diagnosed at nineteen years old, I found many useful websites on the scientific explanations of having thyroid cancer, but nothing on what it could possibly feel like after the operation or how I would cope with being a cancer survivor. I have written this so that people who are going through the same or similar cancer may be able to identify with some of my side affects and get comfort from someone who has survived this terrible disease. What happened to me physically may not happen to someone else. I had never had an operation in my life and I was very unaware of the physical implications on my body. If I had been able to read someone else's personal account of having thyroid cancer and the after affects of surgery I may have been able to understand what my body would need to recover.
This website has been created for your interest. It is by no means medically endorsed or scientific. It is merely an account of what happened to me and how it made me feel, both physically and emotionally.

http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyroidca.html
Updated September 4, 2005 There are about 20,000 new cases of thyroid cancer each year in the United States. Females are more likely to have thyroid cancer at a ratio of three to one. Thyroid cancer can occur in any age group, although it is most common after age 30 and its aggressiveness increases significantly in older patients. The majority of patients present with a nodule on their thyroid which typically does not cause symptoms. Remember, over 99% of thyroid nodules are not cancer! But, when a thyroid cancer does begin to grow within a thyroid gland, it almost always does so within a discrete nodule within the thyroid.
Occasionally, symptoms such as hoarseness, neck pain, and enlarged lymph nodes do occur. Although as much as 75 % of the population will have thyroid nodules, the vast majority are benign. Young people usually don't have thyroid nodules, but as we get older, more and more of us will develop a nodule. By the time we are 80, 90% of us will have at least one nodule. Far less than 1% of all thyroid nodules are malignant. A nodule which is cold on scan (shown in photo outlined in red and yellow) is more likely to be malignant, nevertheless, the majority of these are benign as well. A lot of information about thyroid nodules and the potential of these nodules to be malignant is contained on 3 pages about nodules:

Avian Goiter (Thyroid Hyperplasia or Dysplasia)
Gary D. Butcher, D.V.M., Ph.D, and Curtis C. Beck Thyroid hyperplasia is an enlargement of the thyroid glands due to abnormal proliferation of the epithelial cells lining the follicles. The glands are located in the neck region. Thyroid hyperplasia has been observed in many species of birds, including pigeons, canaries, budgerigars, and wild birds. It is the most common disease of the thyroid gland in the budgerigar. Several conditions associated with damage to the thyroid gland result in goiter. The most common is a dietary iodine deficiency. Substances called goitrogenic agents, which interfere with the normal production of thyroxine by the thyroid glands, may also result in the disease. Feeds containing goitrogenic agents include soybean, flax, rapeseed, kale, cabbage, broccoli, and turnips. Septicemic diseases with an acute onset may affect the thyroid glands causing inflammation and hyperplasia. Exposure to toxic levels of organosphosphates or chlorinated biphenols may also result in enlargement and hyperplasia of the glands. An inadequate level of iodine in the diet leads to a lack of available iodine in the thyroid glands. Iodine is needed for the production of thyroxine. When low levels of thyroxine are in the bloodstream, the brain sends signals to the thyroid glands causing a proliferation of follicular epithelial cells. These cells are responsible for thyroxine production. Hyperplasia of the thyroid gland is a response to the body's need to produce more thyroxine. With sustained iodine deficiency, the signals continue to stimulate epithelial cell proliferation and produce thyroid enlargement.
