Metadata? Thesauri? Taxonomies? Topic Maps!
Making sense of it all
By: Lars Marius Garshol Affiliation: Development Manager Ontopia Date:
Abstract
To be faced with a document collection and not to be able to find the information you know exists somewhere within it is a problem as old as the existence of document collections. Information Architecture is the discipline dealing with the modern version of this problem: how to organize web sites so that users actually can find what they are looking for. Information architects have so far applied known and well-tried tools from library science to solve this problem, and now topic maps are sailing up as another potential tool for information architects. This raises the question of how topic maps compare with the traditional solutions, and that is the question this paper attempts to address. The paper argues that topic maps go beyond the traditional solutions in the sense that it provides a framework within which they can be represented as they are, but also extended in ways which significantly improve information retrieval.

Zthes: a Profile for Thesaurus Navigation in Z39.50 and SRW
17th December 2004
What is Zthes?
The Zthes profile describes an abstract model for representing and searching thesauri - semantic hierarchies of terms as described in ISO 2788 - and specifies how this model may be implemented using the Z39.50 and SRW protocols. It also suggests how the model may be implemented using other protocols and formats. The specification are in two main sections. The first is concerned solely with the abstract representation of thesaurus terms and how they may be searched; and the second with the implementation of these abstract concepts in particular protocols. In Z39.50, this covers how thesaurus terms are encoded in the GRS-1 record structure, how searches are encoded in the Type-1 query, etc. It is intended that the abstract model described here is sufficiently general that it can also be implemented by protocols and data formats other than Z39.50. As examples, an XML DTD is defined for thesaurus terms based on the model, and an SRW version of the profile is provided. ``Zthes'' is pronounced ``Zed-thezz'': not ``Zee-thezz'' and certainly not ``Zee-theez''.

Classification
Almost all classification systems organize ideas into a hierarchical structure so that relationships between terms are provided. Many classifications also include a numerical index to the classification. The most widely used is the Dewey Decimal Classification system.  Summaries of the Dewey system are found at www.oclc.org/dewey/resources/summaries/ . Another well-established classification system is the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). It is a hierarchy of industry classifications. You can consult it at www.statcan.ca/english/concepts/industry.htm See also:

Controlled vocabulary
A controlled vocabulary is an established list of standardized terminology for use in indexing and retrieval of information. An example of a controlled vocabulary is subject headings used to describe library resources. A controlled vocabulary ensures that a subject will be described using the same preferred term each time it is indexed and this will make it easier to find all information about a specific topic during the search process (e.g. Canadian Subject Headings, www.collectionscanada.ca/csh/index-e.html

About Thesauri
What is a thesaurus?
  • For writers, it is a tool like Roget’s one with words grouped and classified to help select the best word to convey a specific nuance of meaning. For indexers and searchers, it is an information storage and retrieval tool: a listing of words and phrases authorized for use in an indexing system, together with relationships, variants and synonyms, and aids to navigation through the thesaurus.
For more information on what an information retrieval thesaurus is and what it contains, see the American standard for thesauri: National Information Standards Institute. American National Standard Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Thesauri . Bethesda, MD: NISO Press, 1994. (ANSI/NISO Z39.19-1993). While standard thesauri are formalized and highly structured, for some purposes a less complex vocabulary is adequate.
When does my organization need a thesaurus?
  • If it has large files of text and unstructured information, and needs to control and provide access to that information. If it is using a search engine for its information, and has found that the engine does not provide adequate results perhaps too much irrelevant information for some queries, while missing useful information that is in the file for other queries.
